At 1:50 I thought Brady was going to say something profound like "I dreamed to be a scientist like him" or "I dreamed to be on a note one day", but no, he just wanted a $50 note :-) I hope your dream came true!

You need to advertise this channel on your other channels more. I didn't even know it existed until recently.

It's not even the fact that it's a specimen that's the problem, it's the fact that the specimen stamps are covering the portrait they're interested! :)

Brady I know u said that if this channel wasn't a success then u would stop and judging by the views it is quite low. My point is plz don't stop

FYI that AUD$50 specimen banknote is worth approximately AUD$7000 to AUD$10000. One sold at auction in 2013 for AUD$6800 (not incl. 19.25% buyers premium) and it was in "nearly uncirculated" condition. Plus there's one on eBay right now with a "Buy It Now" price of AUD$9990. 10 years ago prices were even higher (AUD$15000 to AUD$20000). So Brady, you were holding a note worth a lot more than $50.

The irony: That fifty-dollar note may actually be worth several times its intended value for its historical significance and provenance.
@JamesCoyle95

I'd rather have the specimine note. It is rarer and thus has a higher value.
@Warbek

James Coyle Well not monetary value. Try selling that for anywhere close to $50.
@JamesCoyle95
@JamesCoyle95 9 лет назад
+Warbek96 its a collectors item. Depending on the rarity it could be worth much more to the right buyer.

James Coyle You are correct that note is worth in excess of $30,000 Australian. Given the documentation and that lack of a serial number I would expect it to go much higher.
@juancariasr7932
@juancariasr7932 9 лет назад
James Coyle I would prefer the one with serial numbers so you could have a way to know the font used for it just looking at it. That's the point of having this kind of stuff.

Catzkhan i just discovered this channel and im watching now. I think this is worth way more because its made of the proper ink and paper so its not fake. Its just got "no value" stamped on it and there is only one in the world. Some private collector may be willing to pay more than 50 dollars it, you know? Just so they can have the only one.
@duroncrush
@duroncrush 9 лет назад
Being a specimen note isn't a negative, it makes it a rare piece of history on it's own. A limited number must have been produced for final approval before production began. Additionally the production of actual serialized bills strictly controlled, its not like the can just pull one off the line.

But to be honest: it shouldn't have been too hard, to send out actual 50 bucks, once they were in circulation. On the other hand: the Royal Society DID ask for a specimen explicitly, so...

As a side "note", when I was in Australia, I was always fascinated by the currency. Growing up with the American greenback where all the notes looked the same, the Australian paper notes were colorful with varied sizes and super durable. The coins also had interesting variety.

Hi Brady, thank you for all your interesting stuff and I wish you to go on with the videos. Could you make a sort of "addendum" video where is explained how are such old objects conserved, if they need a special treatement, or else. If it is worth of the explanation and if Keith or someone else at the Royal Societe knows about it. And what is the oldest object stored there?

The specimen version is probably far more rare and valuable. A better story than just a plain old 50.

To be honest, The Royal Society did ask for a specimen in it's letter. So I wouldn't think they should be too upset about it.

In Europe there was a talk about ending 200 and 500 bills. It seems like they're most used by criminals.

The largest note in circulation in the US is $100. There used to be $500 and $1000, and even larger ones used by banks, but they ceased printing after WWII and were taken out of circulation (destroyed or collected) by the 1960s.

You should do the British Museum next! they have a gold viking ring that was apparently the inspiration for the one ring in lord of the rings. I guess if you just stick to the royal society you could be showing us interesting things for many years.

Also, these videos are awesome and you should make more of an effort to bring this channel into the fore; It should be on par with early Numberphile by now.

I'd wager there was some legal conundrum involved that somehow made it illegal for the Bank of Australia to just give the Royal Society 50$.

From the title I was wondering what "specimen" in there was only $50 and what was so significant about that price.

What is exactly this Royal Society? Do they only collect things that are related to scientists, or all kinds of interesting things that are - seen from a historical point of view - relevant?

@errmoc5682

what do u mean. what accent did u think he had this whole time?
@armpitpuncher
@armpitpuncher 7 лет назад
It sounds like standard British English to me. When I was young, British and Australian accents sounded identical to me, but I eventually was able to distinguish them. Or at least I thought so. Maybe subconsciously they still do sound the same to me, but I determine their nationality from other clues, and my brain tricks me into thinking their accent matches the nationality which I've assigned them. And since (afaict) Brady seems to spend most of his time in Britain, I assumed he was British. Or perhaps, due to his time spent there, he's acquired some traces of the accent and I was picking up on that.

I do agree that a "pre ordered" version of the note is more interesting and rare, but they could at least not ruin the drawing with warnings and red flags. One small note like would be enough, and is very ironic that this piece of treasure has "no value" written in it.

This was interesting. I do have to Google Lord Florey now. (A two sentence ' who this person is' thing would be helpful.) It is nice to see Brady on screen more. :) And may I ask, why would it have been a great deal to have a fifty dollar note as a child? Were they rare? Was it hard to save up that amount? I'm curious. Is this note still in circulation? Or others with Lord Florey on it?

Why haven't you done videos with you in front of the camera rather than behind it on your other channels? :D You should do this because you make the video more appealing than a professor speaking to the camera IMO. Even tough THE professor is appealing in the way he is. Hm.
