First: The fig wasp will only reproduce inside a MALE fig, which are produced only in MALE fig trees and are not edible, if the fig wasp enters a female fig she won't be able to lay her eggs there and she will die, pollinating the fig. Second: Most of the commercial fig varieties are self fertile, which means that they will ripen it's figs even without a fig wasp pollinating them, their seeds will be sterile but the fruit will be edible and great. Third: the fig wasp exist only in a few Mediterranean countries, most of the bigger fig producers don't have it, in the US it is present only in some parts of California. It's almost imposible to find a fig that have been pollinated by a wasp. Eat figs they are delicious and guilt free.
yes, but at this point a lot of figs you can buy are not pollinated in that way anymore. there are ways to make the fruits grow using hormones, for example.
Heart-wrenching! This will make such a beautiful ballet! I came here looking for fig trees to plant in my urban homestead. Beautiful! Thank you for the video
in theory, yes. in practice, a lot of figs that are commercialized these days are not pollinated by wasps anymore, they're able to ripen without that process.
Yes, in fact many varieties of common fig have closed eyes so there isn't even an opening for a wasp to crawl into. This also keeps out fruit flys and ants who love the sweet figs too, as well as fungi or bacteria that can spoil the fruit. If bugs freak you out get a closed eye variety of fig tree and you're all set for enjoyment. Google closed eye fig varieties and choose one that sounds delicious to you. I personally like the berry flavor varieties.
so nice going on leaving Eden whos ever idea that was.. mutualism to self preservation, separation and the ego.. cool , nice one, now I get the metaphor
Upsc 2024... preliminary question.. Which one of the following shows a unique relationship with an insect that has coevolved with it and that is the only insect that can pollinate this tree ? (A) Fig (B)Mahua (C)Sandalwood (c)Silk cotton Ans.(A)Fig
Thank you for interesting story! I also recorded and uploaded on RU-vid some Video about Blastophaga on FICUS. In 2016 I do scientific research in Ankara, Turkey. I study biocontrol methods, it means - how to control agricultural pests (insects like pests-moths on tomatos and in fruit orchards) with the use of beneficial insects (small parasitic wasps). So far, we will need to apply less chemicals/ insecticides to control insect pests.
Samuel Doran the common figs we eat are self fertile and do not need a wasp. These wasps are in capri figs so go ahead and eat those delicious wasp free figs.
Eu gosto muito de figo, mais não sabia que o figo precisa inteiramente das vespas ,a natureza nos revela coisas em criveis Mais a doçura desta fruta ou uma flor, obrigado por mais uma surpresa da natureza
For the record, the figs we eat are female ones they are edible ones they only have a tiny female inside them that pollinated it without actually successfully laying its eggs inside which the fig breaks down into protein.
We have like a fig tree in our garden ...can someone explain to me why i always find something that looks like honey coming out from the hole of the fig its yellow n sweet i used to eat it cause it was so sweet n i liked sweet stuff so can someone tell me whats that ? ( i aint eating no figs after this vid)
Umm... I don't know how to ask this but can I steal this video and remix it for King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Big Fig Wasp? Because I will. I just will keep it to myself otherwise.
Every fig in the grocery store has one in it...the mother dies and the fig reabsorbs the body. The tree doesnt put sugar into the fig unless the wasps pollinate it, all the figs that have no wasp fall from the tree and die
Yes but it's better because males only get chromosomes from their mother which means they only get 23 chromosomes and females get 46 so recessive traits get weeded out of the genepool
Did your God know Insects grow in my pome? BIG FIG WASP! BIG FIG WASP! Any wasp I see, it's a fig wasp Pearly guillotine, it's a fig wasp And when the harvest's clean, there's a fig wasp It's a winged machine, it's a fig wasp
