Figaholics Dilemma! Choosing Our Favorite Figs

Today we have put together a response for those asking which are our favorite three figs! Some patience and perseverance is required for you to find this answer, as well as to make it to the end of our 22 minute video!
The fig I mentioned which my father enjoyed the other day is not one we are willing to sell as it's primary significance is tied to an event related to my religious faith. I only brought up this fig up to give an example of how varieties can be one of our favorites for reasons besides taste, etc.
Variety is the spice to life and figs give us a great deal of that!

Thank you for watching and for commenting. My father passed away eight months after I posted this video and I get emotional thinking about it also but treasure the many memories. The first Black Madeira fig I shared with my dad the jammy pulp got on his shirt and he was not too happy about that even though his parents were from Madeira! But he enjoyed many more in the years following. I'm glad my father shared with me that my grandfather also had a passion for growing fruit trees and that mine finally made sense to him.

Very good video. You're right, there's more to the love of figs than taste. My interest in other varieties of figs resulted from pursuing a desire to make fig preserves like my grandmother made. Praise God from Whom all blessings flow...

I'm just trying to learn how to grow and maintain them. Now moving to getting some figs to taste good, then in the hunt for the best varieties that work for our family.

'Violet de Solliès' keeps it shape well when fully ripe, at least when grown in the right climate, that is one of the reasons that it makes such a great jam. Climate can help a lot of people make up their minds what to keep and what to not keep, climate can actually make different fig varieties less different from each other, not something that could happen so much in your climate. As you know when figs are pollinated they can taste different, have a different texture and be better quality. Yes, some people are so used to figs being a certain way, and some of them they have high fig standards, they can be like 'that is not a real fig' when they try a different kind of fig. It does not take long for birds to figure out that the scare tape is harmless. I have lots of family in Malta, yet I have only been there once since I gained an interest in fig trees, I was surprised how early their fig trees stop producing VS here in the 'South Eastern USA'. I have 'Malta Purple Red', and I have 'GM #142', both are very good, do you have 'GM #142'? it's sort of like Smith!
@Figaholics

Hello Alan, hope you are doing well. I do not have GM 142. I have a GM 144 that has not fruited yet, the others are listed at www.figaholics.com/cuttings.htm You can contact me via email shown on my web site if you wish to discuss further, thanks.

I understand you, it does not mean that he retires from life, it is like Forest Gum, that after being running for some time, he stopped. I live in Phoenix area and I bought 5 in a pot because they were 2 years old and I was entering the summer and I better not plant them, but, it was hard work moving them from one place to another looking for shade because their leaves were burning and I said, next spring I plant them and none more, fertilizing, water, care, sun, birds and headaches that gave me the intense sun, if any case, I will graft and be happy. Many times we have to stop to see that there are many beautiful things around us, sometimes we put a lot of passion into things that actually end up just being things. Being human and enjoying the wonders of God is transcendent, if you have the opportunity, take it.

What do you do about birds eating your figs …..thank you for your wonderful videos.
@Figaholics

We use three systems to help limit damage. We also previously tried organza bags but our birds pecked right through those easily. Here are videos on two systems: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NSSglyrJp4I.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mJNS_IvOS24.html Additionally, we later installed an expensive automated green laser light system to help scare away birds.

I have maybe 50-100 favorites, but haven't put that list together yet! :) Our annual cuttings sale will be posted on our Figaholics web site again in January. Watch there or our Facebook page for updates, see links in channel description.

Your farm sounds fantastic! Never knew there were so many varieties. How/where did you accumulate all those varieties? Do you sell cuttings after you prune?
@Figaholics
@Figaholics 3 года назад
We acquired cuttings from other collectors, some through eBay, some from friends, etc. There is a very strong group of small growers who collect like me. We have an annual cutting sale each year that started last Friday. Most varieties sold out already but still have some nice ones available at www.figaholics.com/cuttings.htm
