If I remember the book correctly, the reason the final headshot kills *only* Tyler is because The Narrator looses a molar earlier in the story, which allows the bullet to pass through his cheek instead of ricocheting into the back of his head (like Tyler)
@clonexx
@clonexx 2 года назад
A molar wouldn’t deflect a .22, let alone a .45. It would just destroy the molar and keep going. It seemed to me to be a metaphorical killing. The gunshot didn’t need to hit anything vital because in Norton’s mind, it kills Tyler, which is all that matters.
@Kilborns
@Kilborns 2 года назад
Nah, Norton thought he was going to kill himself, so he would’ve imagined Tyler dying as well. I’m pretty sure some people that try to commit suicide by gun in the mouth survive in the same way that Norton does
@clonexx
@clonexx 2 года назад
@@Kilborns I disagree, there’s no signs that he wanted to end his life there, just that he wanted Tyler gone. It could have gone wrong and he ends up killing himself, but I believe he intentionally angled the handgun to come out the side of his face to metaphorically kill Durden. Remember that he starts with the gun under his chin. If he really wanted to kill himself, he would have pulled the trigger then, as it’s an almost guaranteed death with how the handgun was positioned. He then drops it down, says “My eyes are open” and points the handgun in his mouth, angled outwards. To me, that says he was only trying to “trick” Durden into thinking he killed himself. It sounds weird, I know, but that’s what I’ve come away with from that scene after seeing the movie more times than I can count.
@CertifiedSunset
@CertifiedSunset 2 года назад
@@Kilborns Yup, putting the barrel in your mouth is probably the worst way to shoot yourself in the head. I head of a guy who tried to shoot himself with a shotgun, but because the angle was off he blew off the front of his face and lived. Horrible shit. The lesson here being, don't shoot yourself idiot.
@CertifiedSunset
@CertifiedSunset 2 года назад
Even a small caliber like .22LR would shatter the molar. The brain trauma from shooting himself killed Tyler. Just like when Tyler vanished after the car crash.

Was going to watch The Blair Witch Project in the theater with some friends but the showing was sold out. So we decided to see Fight Club since it was the next showing. I knew 10 minutes into the movie that this was like nothing I’d seen before. It’s easy to see now that Tyler and “Jack” are the same person but not when this was released. In the book, the black guy that fights "Ed Norton" is from a group of black guys that are heroin addicts. Nobody ever wants to fight them so when they do get picked they fight hard and dirty. The movie doesn't explain that he receives an injury to his cheek from having his head slammed in the floor. Throughout the book the hole in his cheek never really heals because it is opened up every fight club night. During the ending he believes he's dreaming and tries putting his finger through the hole to wake up. It. doesn't work so he shoots himself through the hole...and wakes up in the hospital. The janitor outside his room is all beat up and he realizes project mayhem will go on without him.

This is the first movie that made me notice the differences in people’s advice on comparing yourself to others. When you wanna be happy like someone else they say “Don’t compare yourself to them. Everyone has their own definition of happiness, you should fine yours.” But when you depressed and in pain they say “That’s not pain, see those people over there? That’s real pain you’re fine compared to that.” Which one is it?
@OctoKrool
@OctoKrool 2 года назад
I think the first one is true, in life we all have a different view of happiness and finding it helps make living easier. Though the second one I don't agree with, we can't compare pain because if we keep belittling our pain as not a big deal we will never get over it; all pain is different like happiness. We have to find our solution that helps us move on, comparing never helps.

David Fincher had an absolutely badass moment making this movie. He tried to put in the original novel's line from Marla "I want to have your abortion," but the studio wouldn't let him do it. But since his contract said they could only make him change any line once, he made it the arguably even worse "I haven't been fucked like that since grade school," which the studio was then stuck with. Plus, Helena Bonham Carter herself didn't understand the true implication of the line due to the British school system being set up very differently, and was reportedly PISSED when she found out she was actually saying Marla had sex as a kid.

You never feel rested and don't know you've slept, kinda of feels like you blinked very slowly. It's very bizarre and exhausting. Weirdly, its more mentally and physically exertion exhausting than "normal" lack of sleep where you feel tired and yawn a lot - basically, you just feel burnt out all the time.

As good as Norton is here, there is a movie that was a mind blower, much more then this one. Primal Fear. That film shot him into the lime light. Helena Bohemn Carter was perfect in Sweeney Todd. Highly recommend it. It is a musical and one of the best :D Ohh and not sure if you noticed but Angel, the blonde guy, say hello to a young Jared Leto.

You could also say the same about this movie and The Matrix but in a much broader sense: they share the general themes of waking up from your normal everyday existence + questioning the established reality and ways of thinking that the system has programmed you to passively accept. And of course they're both quite the mindf*ck the first time that you watch them!

This brilliant movie was very much a product of its time. In the 90s the cold war and Apartheid ended. Young people had raves and XTC and the Internet held so much promise while there was a revival of the 60s going on. This movie was an antidote to the sometimes blatant optimism of that time. And strangely, after 20 years it has become relevant again when social media bubbles can radicalize ourselves if we don't watch out.
@sntxrrr

@@sntxrrr what does the Cold War ending 10 years before this movie, Apartheid ending in a different country, raves, or the internet have to do with “the mood” of the 1990’s in the US and how does it relate to this movie and why does it seem like you copy pasted from a blurb review in an attempt to appear smart?
@sntxrrr
@sntxrrr 2 года назад
@@chrissmith6097 I can't help you with the last part but in general I would say the 90's were a time of optimism when most of the big world problems seemed to have disappeared. The internet was talked about in terms of 'the global village', open communication with everyone would make us all cozy neighbors. For a while there weren't nation-wide firewalls or mass monitoring. We avoided WWIII so society could sigh from relief and relax. If you don't have to spend that much on defense you can spend more on social welfare or infrastructure and in several western countries more social oriented governments were elected and re-elected. When there are no perceived external threats it is easier to take care of yourself or to turn inwards, party, buy that new Windows 95 computer and foster that Ikea nesting instinct. The main character fully commits to that and expects everything to be fine. But that optimism doesn't work for him because his is unaware of or ignores his actual problems which allow them to manifest as Tyler Durden. But if he was brainwashed by that optimism, Tyler Durden brainwashes too with cheap rhetoric and 'joke' terrorism, which is still terrorism. Thinking everything will be fine and can just be easily fixed can be dangerous and only by recognizing that can he start to move on. You can explain the story differently, there are definitely several layers to it and that makes it such a good movie. I've seen the movie explained in terms of toxic masculinity and that seems to work pretty well too but to me that is a bit too fashionable and ignores the historical context too much. I think my blurb is part of why this movie resonated so much with the people that liked it at the time.

You guys mentioned at the end of the video that Tyler had some good ideas but went too far when he took the club into cult territory and then to a terrorist organization. That's actually a pretty common tactic that scammers, cult leaders, terrorists, fascists, etc. use. They seduce their followers with some wise words, make them feel like they belong/are helping better themselves - all in order to radicalize them. You guys are also right on the money that Narrator created Tyler because he thought Tyler would be the type of man Marla would be attracted to. A lot of the satire of the film comes from Tyler, the Narrator's id, having more plans than just being a cool image created to seduce a woman.

This movie does a wonderful job of showing realism vs nihilism. Tyler Durden starts off the movie by bringing the narrator to reality but eventually goes off the deep end when he tries to cause havoc and blow up the buildings. It's a movie that has great messages about society but also shows the negative impacts of total nihilism.

I do _everything_ except cook the food and wash the dishes (which we have an industrial dishwasher for, they just load). what i wanted to be? doesn't matter. i'd be dead in six weeks, tyler, because i can't pursue anything outside of watching youtube for two hours before i go to sleep, waking up 20 minutes before work, and doing it again. just bitching because we have 3 incomes but haven't escaped this hotel room with two beds, no kitchen, for over 2 years now.

With some grades of insomnia you can get *some "sleep" but it's NOT rest, it's passing out from pure exhaustion and restlessly waking up a couple hours later, you might get maybe 8-16 hours sleep a week. It'll have you in tears begging to fall asleep to get some rest and you'll ache so much in every muscle from them not relaxing after being restless for hours, your tired mind will start playing tricks on you, you'll start feeling like your dreaming whilst awake and vice versa... On top of that with being tired all the time your social and work life will all start to fall apart, not able to keep a schedule as you never really know when you might pass-out or wake up, always tired so not able to get things done whilst being awake aware of how much potential time your wasting can lead to depression... It's not fun, the narrator is right it is painful :(
