There's nothing more 'serious' about it. Just Stallone showing that, after 35 years, he's still willing to grovel for approval from critics...He took his most successful movie, and tore it apart, to satisfy people who would never like it, anyway. Sad...
The Director's Cut is a mixed bag for me. Maybe it's because I'm so used to the original cut but some of the scenes that were removed I liked. But ALL of the new scenes that were added were all stellar. Especially Apollo putting up more of a fight.
Agreed, I feel like the pacing on the original in some key scenes were better. But some were great. I particularly loved the extra footage and edit of Drago waiting in the ring under the stage in the Apollo fight. And like you say Creed putting up more of a fight.
Totally agree. All the added scenes were great, but messing with the existing scenes didn't work for me. That said, I did like the added shots of Drago that made him a little more human.
While I have an affection towards the original I have to say that I really liked the changes to this scene in particular in the director’s cut. I love the part when it flashes back to the last conversation that Rocky had with Apollo before he fought with Drago. I also really liked that the dumb scene with the son was cut out. I always hated that scene because it’s a serious fight with personal stakes that isn’t about winning and losing but survival and you have this unnecessary scene of comic relief that no matter how many times I watch it is still so cringe worthy. I am so glad that it was cut out because it made no sense to me and it was goofy. The entrances in both films were epic but again I enjoyed the director’s cut of this scene so much more.
Great new moments in the DC, but many unnecessary random omissions of helpful dialogue and moments, and the elimination of the locker room scene, which was a major misfire. The DC is not the ultimate cut, but it's great to see some of the new footage, some of which belonged in the original, especially the extra funeral dialogue. Like Superman II, the definitive cut is to be found by combining the best of both versions, which I (and I suspect many other fans) am working on right now.
::raises hand:: I plan on simply keeping the film as we all know and love it, but adding in some of the new directors cut scenes to give the film a bit more weight.
For me the OC was better for Drago's entrance. A small edit in the DC before the tunnel scene takes us out of the sheer fact that this is a killer coming out of the light.
Thank you so much for doing these Videos. Live in Germany. I had no chance to see the Movie. It's not available. Since 85 I'm a huge fan of that Man and the Rocky Series. Can't count how many times I have see them all. Please go on an upload more of the new Version. Maybe you start with the beginning of that. Thank you very much. 😘 Keep Punching
Oh dude thank you so much for your lovely comment. I too am a huge fan and have been excited about this for a long time. Rocky IV is my favourite. I still very much prefer the original cut. I wanted to share snippets and comparisons of the two to those fans who would be interested. I don't wanna get into trouble and post the whole movie but will do a few more interesting clips and comparisons for you to see and enjoy. Keep punching 😎😊👍
I prefer the original for multiple reasons....the edits are smoother, the colors are warmer, the music sets a mood, and i prefer keeping the shot of Rocky praying (something Rocky was known for even by Mick) rather than making it seem like he was just thinking. After the youtube clips I've seen, I have no desire to even rent the Director's cut, but I'm glad I own the original.
That literally depends on what the director was going for and this new version is abt character not spectacle like the original. I'd say the new one is more emotional.
2 nice touches on the director's cut. Rocky kisses Adrian before entering the ring. Then before Drago does his airborne shuffle down to the ring, he starts walking with a half smile, looking around.
Rocky would have been slaughtered had he tried to fight with Creed’s style. It worked against Clubber because he’s a brawler who looks for the knockout on every punch, which led to him tiring out within 3 rounds. Drago isn’t a brawler, nor does he have an issue with stamina. The only reason Rocky was able to hang with him for 15 rounds is because he kept chopping away at the body, which eventually wore Drago down. If Rocky had tried the “stick and move” style, Drago would have knocked him out within 6 rounds. His reach is too long and he would have caught Rocky with a tough shot as he was coming in for a jab.
@@tailedgates9 Ivan was the perfect fighter. Strength, speed, stamina, technique, reach, height. He literally had no weaknesses. Match him up with any boxer (other than Rocky) and I can't see him losing, even to a prime Apollo. If it wasn't for Rocky having the toughest chin in boxing history, there would have been no stopping him.
IM A FANATIC ROCKY 4 FAN....I LOVE THIS MOVIE....WORD FOR WORD AND THE MUSIC TRAINING IS IMPECCABLE AND MOTIVATING...IM 49 YEARS OLD AND STILL LISTENING TO THE ROCKY 4 TRAINING MUSIC FOR MY WORKOUTS.... ALTHOUGH I WAS DISAPPOINTED WITH THE DIRECTORS CUT WHEN I WATCHED IT ON PRIME CHANNEL... I LOVE THE ORIGINAL VERSION...I LOVE THE SOUND OF THE LOUD HITS AND EXAGGERATED TRAINING NOISES DURING AND WHEN THEY PUNCH EACH OTHER...NOT THE REALISTIC BLOWS FROM THE DIRECTORS CUT ALSO THEY CUT OUT THE PART WHERE IVAN DRAGO PUNCHES ROCKY IN THE JAW SLOW MOTION IN SYNC WITH THE ( WAR ) MUSIC...LISTENING TO IVAN DRAGOS REALISTIC PUNCHES TO ROCKY...SOMEWHAT MADE HIM LOOKED WEAKER....INSTEAD OF THE IVAN DRAGO VOLCANO SUPER HUMAN STRENGTH IMAGE THAT I WAS USED TO BACK IN THE 80'S.....MY HUMBLE OPINION...I WISH THEY HAVE A REMIX OR EXTENDED VERSION OF ( HEARTS ON FIRE / UP THE MOUNTAIN ) MUSIC SOON????
Sorry, anyone know where can I find the Directors Cut? I can´t find it in streaming platforms. I live in Spain, I don't know if maybe still is not available for public, but I see that any youtubers are uploading excerpts of the movie. Any advice will be very apreciated. :)
Just watched Rocky vs drago last night on Amazon Prime this film is such a Improvement to the original it is a solid film with a lot of the Ridiculousness removed I am ecstatic he did this and I'm looking forward to the Blu-ray release of it I shall hold on to my original and I'm psyched for this new version
I agree 100%. Drago had always been my favorite and this new one was fantastic and ADDED context to the character even adding to why Drago acted the way he did in Creed 2. Was a dream come true to go see that new addition on the big screen
Its only available if you are im US. I cant watch it on amazon prime. Not available for my country (switzerland). What a joke and disrespect to the fans around the world.
I still haven't seen thr DC cut but as long as "I must break you" is in I'm good. 😂 But seriously I prefer Dragos entrance in the original because as a child I didn't see him as a normal human
Why remove the scene where the Russians tell us how much an average boxer punches per square inch? But leave in how much Drago punches? With no reference this means nothing. Tells us nothing of how hard he hits.
If this is anything to go by then it's pointless. He even reuses the same cut a few times in the 2nd one. Alternate angles, longer takes etc. Na. It's no improvement. Tinkering with something nearly 40 years old.
Love the director's cut, it's a way better dramatic improvement over the original, which was very MTV. The original is iconic, and possibly my favorite Rocky film because of all of its 80s glory, but it felt like Sly playing Sly in a boxing movie rather than him playing Rocky. This cut feels more like a Rocky drama that way, but with all the iconic montages and soundtrack still largely intact. I wish he didn't remove two key scenes which were Rocky and Adrian celebrating their anniversary and Rocky & Apollo talking just before Apollo's fight. It would have helped with context for when we see the flashback during Rocky's scene backstage when he's praying. I wish Sly also kept in more of Bridgette Nielsen's dialogue but there is no major hindrance to the story because this purely a nostalgic preference. The Rocky III recap also should have been left as is, but comparing the two, I realised that Sly re-edited it because he wanted to highlight Apollo's and Rocky's friendship and remind the viewers of the emotional weight behind Apollo's death and how it affected Rocky, especially after he lost Mickey in the previous film. This change to the intro reiterated Rocky's emotional state in this movie and explained a lot about the decisions he made as a result of Apollo's death. I noted a couple of continuity errors due to the rearrangement of shots, but as an editor, these are things you sometimes have to deal with when you're re-telling the big picture. I loved all the added scenes and I was also super glad they removed the robot, but it's a shame that the scene of Rocky washing his car in that sick tracksuit was cut because of it, but again, it doesn't really hurt the story in any way.
I agree. The new footage is in there but most scenes that are old, other than training or fighting have been edited, hence the total run time not being much longer.
Hated the new version so many scenes with Brigitte Neilson cut out along many others I thought it was going to be like Aliens Directors cut with a lot more added in not scenes removed
I felt the disrobing shot in the original he looked a little too small to be a heavyweight, whereas the DC its cropped and covered a little better to make it appear he is bigger.
Buenos dias amigo, quisiera saber si posees el ling para descargar la nueva version de ROCKY 4 rocky vs drago en español latino .....y gracias por el apoyo
It was an OK stand alone cut of the movie. It definitely portrays Drago as more of a human being and less android like which is how he behaves in Creed 2 and dare I say Rocky seems a little dumber it this version. It seems that a lot of the new dialog scenes were cut oddly. Many times it comes across as if they are about too say something else and it abruptly cuts off to the next person. Almost as if the scenes were filmed separately and then edited together to create the conversation. Even the fights appear to have repeated scenes which make it a bit weird to look at (still great to watch though.) It just feels like they have repackaged Rocky 4 using a lot of outtakes / B cuts to get over a more down to earth version (which they succeeded with) In my opinion those diaglog scenes are just not delivered as well as they were in the original. I did enjoy watching the Director's cut it's definitely more gritty with some great extra content but it just didn't flow as well as the original masterpiece in my opinion. Rocky 4 is one of my all time favourite films. I'm sooo gutted I was unable to watch it in the cinema here in Thailand (despite getting a ferry to another island just to see it) but happy I was finally able to watch on Amazon.
Its only available if you are in US. I cant watch it on amazon prime. Not available for my country (switzerland). What a joke and disrespect to the fans around the world.
The original is better by far . I know slys son dying in 2012 is a soft spot for removing the robot scenes . The robot actually helped him read during that period from I read . But whole movie is a classic . The T2 directors cut from James Cameron is better in terms of explaining more of what happens. Rocky 4 is the best one in the franchise , no need to mess with perfection !
@@DNOstalgia OH, no problem! I appreciate you doing so and letting me know. I haven't got to see R vs. D yet but, I did genuinely wonder who is watching the kids since Sly hated and removed Paulie's robot lol? :)
@@crush41gb Hahahahaha I think Rocky Jr looked after himself and hence grew up a lot and is Sage in Rocky V for when Rocky comes back to USA hahahahahaha
@@DNOstalgia 🤣 I mean wasn't there a housekeeper or did they just remove all scenes of literally everyone leaving for Russia without the kid lol? Did they not cut back to him and his friends watching the fight on TV or the I love you at the end? Thank you though. I have asked that question since last year and no one, especially Sly lol has answered. I watched the entire doc when he was making this looking for a clue.🤪 That would explain the issues Sage had with him in 5. Man, that was so painful to go from this to that and could Paulie do more damage to Rocky's family life lol?!
I'm sorry, but the Rocky franchise should've ended at three. This movie was both dumb and predictable, being much the same as three but with a different villain.
I prefer the part in the old ones but I like he removed the kid's stuff , prefer old colors too , voices over made me cringe there was no need for that in this movie
@@oldmanscoffe3851 when Rocky gets knocked down by Drago and he says '' dont be scared'' that's a voice over by Stallone made in 2021 , you can cleary hear that its from his voice of 2021
You really do feel a big difference in how drago is as a character in the Director’s Cut as opposed to how cartoonish he appeared at first. Especially when he comes back in Creed II
Not needed shit all the way! When someting is perfect the way it is...never fucked up with bad changes ❌🙈🚷🚦This corona shit/free time is not good for nothing i see 🤣
I don't know which part is better. In the Original Film we see the upcoming clash of two superhumans, but in the Ultimate Cut we see something more realistic. Two top class fighters from very different worlds, waiting the fight of their lives.
An artist needs to know when to say his work is good enough - Stallone should have stopped after ROCKY 2 - Lucas should have stopped after RETURN OF THE JEDI
6:39 see this is one of the things that I didn't like with the stuff that Stallone decided to remove. By removing the scene of Apollo and Rocky before Apollo's fight, the flashback has no context. Instead of being a call back to something that you heard earlier, you would be left wondering where this scene and this dialogue came from. Obviously for those of us who have seen the original, we know where it came from, but Stallone self-admitted that his attempt was to make a standalone director's cut movie. He did the same thing with the scene where Rocky is putting the pictures on the mirror while playing the dialogue he had with Adrian after she said "you can't win" in the original. No context if you are watching the director's cut as a stand alone
I like both versions of Rocky 4. I think Sylvester Stallone should've really mixed it up and had it where Rocky broke up the fight between Apollo and Drago and surprised everyone by having him in extended scenes for the training. I know I'm asking a lot but it would've been cool. Then instead of having Drago fight Rocky in USA it follows the same way as it does in the movie. Show some scenes where there were some close calls of assassination attempts on Drago with some crazy lunatic with a rifle or even other boxers at the hotel that they are staying at challenging Drago and even threating to kill him if he doesn't fight. Then you could also have bad press in the newspapers and in the news media painting them as bad people for trying to kill Apollo their hero and champ. Then you as the viewer get the whole spectrum of the Russians getting upset, Drago and his wife getting into arguments over his life and reluctantly decide to go home. This could lead to their next scene where you watch Drago's wife tell the press that they are going home because of the threats to her husband's life and all of the other things that she mentions. Then have Apollo in the press conference telling everyone how much of a killer Drago is and that he's not a fighter. The Russian spokes person would step up and tell the press how easy it was for Drago to beat this weak insignificant old man and that Drago wasted his time coming here to challenge Rocky Balboa who is also a weak old man and that Drago shouldn't waste his time fighting genetically inferior men in America who can't stand on their fight and that they should look at challenges in Europe for professional boxers. They go back and forth with insults before they finally leave and Apollo convinces Rocky to challenge Drago and everything else plays pretty much the same way as the rest of the movie. Having Drago with even more speaking roles would've been highly desired. I know back in 1985 Stallone wasn't thinking about doing a cut for this film 35 years later and he just wanted to make a great movie like his other films and he did. It's got a lot of great stuff that are great. This new cut is great to, it's got some great cuts and nice scenes put in place. I'm just thinking to myself it would've been exciting to see some old scenes and footage of where Stallone cut some new stuff where Creed was still alive and made through to the end of the movie, it's hypothetical. I'm spoiled I know.
I believe that the entrances of a boxer says alot about who they are, and the focus they are in. In undertones and subliminal ways, entrances determine the outcome of a fight, or at least show a huge impact of the outcome. Spirituality is made by having good entrances and displaying the nature of a good fighter, and then proving that confidence in the ring.
I live in Brazil and I loking for some link to watch this director's cut Mas I love this series , especially this rocky 4 Some of parts I could see was stellar Great
I love both the directors cut and the original cut of Rocky 4. I still say, Rocky should have worn white gloves it would have been a nice change and I think the white gloves look better with the American flag trunks. Plus it looks better to me when boxing opponents have different color gloves.
@@simonbelmont65 it would have looked awesome. I have the NECA figures, I might swap the white gloves of Apollo with Rocky to get the Ultimate desired look 😎👍🏻
Sly F'd the end fight with the editing and rearranging of the scene continuity. There are several shots used were Drago's eye is obviously cut before it was cut, took me out of it because that is a pivotal point in the fight showing that Rocky has a chance to win. You can also see a round 15 sign lit up in the rafters of the arena in round 1 or 2. To top it all off Sly uses a scene once the fight was finished that was probably him and Dolph out of character congratulating each other on the fight, MF killed Apollo but "great fight bro...". This was a mess of a cash grab, glad Sly could kill time during Covid to F his movie up.
The directors cut feels like a 40 yrs late almost pointless endeavour. A little something Stallone did during the pandemic to occupy his mind. Other than the funeral scene which should have remained in the original movie, there's not a great deal here that feels worth it.
