The longimanus like many other shark species is critically endangered due to the overfishing by industrial fishing and the constant demand for shark fins from Asia. Sharks are a crucial part of the oceans eco system and have to be protected. The pointless slaughter of sharks has to stop and is well documented in movies like "Fin" or "Envoy: Shark Cull".
I see it listed as THREATENED, but not CRITICALLY ENDANGERED. Their numbers are way down, but I think it’s important to keep our sharks and their listings accurate. For example, bull sharks, lemons and blacktips are enjoying very high populations in many of their ranges. Where people follow the rules, conservation works. The corrections need to be made in the areas of abuse, and not raise restrictions for those who are already following the rules in other areas.
@@driftless1870 I checked a few sources which say critically endangered. For example here: www.researchgate.net/publication/350810288_Carcharhinus_longimanus-Oceanic_Whitetip_Shark_The_IUCN_Red_List_of_Threatened_Species_2019 Either endangered or critically endangered: They need protection.
@@buchpetzer I am completely opposed to shark finning and industrial fishing practices. (Not to be confused with commercial fishing.) My concern is that, in an effort to stop abuses abroad, we implement policies at home that do a disservice to the habitats and marine environments we enjoy and support with good conservation practices. Too often we tend to respond to a global concern with local control. You can’t make your waist smaller by over-tightening your shoe laces.
@@ParleLeVu They do. I scuba dived and free dived a lot with sharks and while some cautiously stay around, most flee after a few moments. Sharks are extremely cautious creatures that will take no unnecessary risks and you really see that first hand when you’re underwater with them and your fear quickly dissipates and you even end up wishing they got a little closer. Oceanic white tip on the other hand has balls of brass and will get super close and won’t hesitate to take a bite if it finds the opportunity. That’s literally the only shark I would feel uncomfortable to scuba dive with.
They are very nervous and once they strike they will come again. I don’t understand why the divers take such a risk. I dived for 20 years and always respected these beautiful wild sharks in their territory
Try this 5 times faster, scary as hell, when they come....why dive at this location, lucky they are chill but some one will be scarfed eventually, we will not dive when tips are around, ridiculous behavior by dive operators, what’s the point of diving here? Too say you did it, leave them alone.... ,
Great footage! Also I had to look up that first song and was surprised to find it to be from the Rolling Stones. Great vibe and the first one i hear of them that I really really like!
@@scottc543 Wild horses is a great song. If I would need to pick three Stones songs it would be among them. If I could only listen to one Stones song for the rest of my life it would be Gimme Shelter. The studio version is great. But never heard a good live version.
Stones have such a distinctive sound, so many fantastic songs over the decades it's hard to list favourites. Gimme Shelter has had some great live performances, even as an opening with the female singing that haunting tune, with each of the Stone's coming on, Charlie first picks up drums, then Ronnie, Keith before the best ever front man Mick taunts the crowds. I was lucky to see the Stones 3 times in the 70s, last was Midnight Rambler, Sympathy for the Devil...smaller venues, Toronto. 3rd row center $7 ticket! ( Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto) Unforgettable!
Don’t try this in the pacific, they are very different, not as mellow as these tips, they come in fast and aggressive, they will bite before they bumb, these are a different animals completely, maybe they are baited and used humans because you’d be missing a limb swimming like that here in Hawaii
super inquisitive like these but you will never see one swimming so slowly as these, I mostly free dive in open ocean so a lot of interaction is at the surface... also we dive 2 or 3 people at a time, it looks in the video there’s lot of divers in the water and I assume they are there to see the sharks so it my be a weird deal and not natural behavior with constant feeding
Perfect Predator, not changed since 250 Million years, because its just perfect. I am LOVING Sharks - Nice pictures here, never see an Longimanus by myself under water, lots of other sharks but not a blue one or a longimanus
Imagine if sharks say "hi" by biting lightly. They must be thinking "Every time I say "hi" a piece of one of those weird land-fish falls off." Then they away really fast..
Why after ? ? lol 😆 they are all potentially dangerous species for humans ´ ´ One can go through shark attacks statistics to discuss the matter all one wants but if facing one of them not on scientific or research or whatever purpose I bet any person who is not suicidal will get ouf the water 😆 White tip is not afraid of men and hardly flee away from men ( commandant Jacques Yves Cousteau mentioned that )
I've heard that white tips are more agressive than the ones you mentioned, so with them there's a high chance of an atack...that's why some people say that the white tips are the most dangerous.
The white tip is far more aggressive than either of those. The great white is dangerous because of its superiority, the Tiger is dangerous because of its opportunism, the bull shark because of its aggression and the oceanic white tip because of all of the above.
why are they constantly finning so hecticly? are they so bad divers with zero bouyancy skills? you should be just chilling in upright positio n with zero finning in such a situation.
You are right. Most of the divers did not have sufficient experience for these dives. I had about 40 dives when I went on the liveaboard and it was the first time I saw a shark.
A good example of what not to do when diving with the Longimanus. Fortunately nothing happened. But there were several incidents in November 2018 at the Brother Islands.
Dive Master: Ever dive with sharks like this? Diver: nope Dive Master: How much weight do you need? Diver: 10 lbs Dive Master: Here's 14lbs Have a good dive
Please vote for the EU citizen initiative to ban the trade with shark fins in the EU: eci.ec.europa.eu/012/public/#/screen/home Official website: www.stop-finning-eu.org/de/
You will very likely feel uncomfortable and your heart will beat faster. But: If you follow the rules you will be fine. Its a critically endangered species and we are lucky that there are still some left.
