Red Wing versus Wolverine is the biggest boot battle of them all. The question of Iron Ranger or 1000 Mile has been hotly debated since time immemorial and there’s good reason: they’re both often considered the best entry level boot, they both have cult followings, and they’re similarly priced.
I’ve actually worn both pairs of boots for months, and I think there’s a clear winner.

LEATHER
*Red Wing
The Amber Harness color is oil-tanned, full grain, remarkably thick leather that is no fun to break in (expect blisters) but over the year that I’ve been wearing these, the leather and the sole have molded to the shape of my foot and almost feel like they’re custom designed for me.
It doesn’t have as much color depth as Wolverine, but it aged much better as time went by. I conditioned them with Obenauf’s Leather Oil and while it darkened the leather a lot more than something like Venetian Shoe Cream would have, it did a great job of keeping everything moist. Taking care of oil tanned leather doesn’t need to be overthought.
*Wolverine
Wolverine opted for the famous Chromexcel® leather, a combination tanned leather from Horween Leather Company that is jam packed with oils, waxes, and greases, including beeswax and beef tallow. It has great depth of color and looks fantastic in sunlight, the only real downside is that the top finish is pretty vulnerable to scratches and nicks.
You just need Venetian Shoe Cream to condition these, but Saphir’s Renovateur can also be good if you like shinier boots. While Chromexcel is good quality, Wolverine doesn’t seem to have done a great job selecting their materials - these boots creased like crazy within just a week of wear.
WATCH THE WOLVERINE REVIEW: • Wolverine 1000 Mile Re...
SOLE
*Red Wing
It depends on when you buy them. Traditionally, this shoe has been made with a nitrile cork sole, but as of summer 2018 it’s only available with a Vibram mini lug, which offers superior traction and grip.
Then there’s a cork midsole, a steel shank for arch support and stability, and a leather insole. Both boots have a 270-degree Goodyear welt, which makes them easy to resole and offers some water resistance.
*Wolverine
These boots have a butyl-treated leather sole, which I didn’t like at all. They slip pretty easily in wet weather and while the grip does improve over time, you’re rewarded with a very ugly, scratched up leather sole for your troubles.
There’s also no shank in this boot and while the Vibram heel offers a little better shock absorption, this advantage is nullified once you get the full Vibram sole in the new Red Wings.
SIZING
For either boot, I recommend ordering a half size down from your sneaker size. I’m between 11.5 and 12 on a Brannock device and I’m comfortable in the size 11 from both brands.
Red Wing has widths in D and EE, Wolverine in D and EEE. Narrow feet need not apply, unfortunately.
READ MORE: THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO HOW BOOTS SHOULD FIT: stridewise.com/...
PRICE
*Red Wing
On Amazon you can get a pair for about $320.
*Wolverine
Expect to pay about $360 on Wolverine’s official site. They’re a little cheaper on Amazon (the price fluctuates) but don’t expect it to approach Red Wing’s price, which has the clear advantage here.
YOU SHOULD TOTALLY BUY YOUR PAIR AT THE LINK IN MY REVIEW: stridewise.com...
VERDICT
The 1000 Mile is definitely dressier and more versatile, but Red Wing is cheaper, gives better support, has better grip, and more importantly it aged much, much, much better.

I live in Grand Rapids, MI, 15 min south of Rockford, the home of wolverine. I really wanted a pair of 1000 milers. You’d think I would be able to find a pair at the wolverine factory store. Nope! Nowhere on this side of the state. What the hell? I rolled up to the red wing store and got a pair of both the Iron Rangers and the Blacksmiths. I love them! I yoosta be a yooper so I didn’t mind buying a Minnesota made product over our local Wolverine. Super glad to know all the leather comes from your tannery. I love that!

I own both. The Iron Rangers (8111) are five years old and my 1000 Mile Boots (cordovan #8) are a year old. I love both boots and wear both often. The 1000 Mile Boots win on aesthetics, which is subjective and the Rangers win on durability, and I’d be willing to bet that most people that own both boots would agree. Short of a gash in the leather, there almost isn’t anything that doesn’t rub or polish out of the Iron Rangers. While the CXL on the 1Ks can recover from some scuffing/scratching with a good polish, the competition in this department isn’t even close. One thing to be said is that I do live in western Pennsylvania, which is notorious for harsh winters. The IRs are the only boot I wear in the winter, as I don’t want to put a leather sole through a barrage of sidewalk salt. Last winter was especially wicked, and I’d thought that I had irreconcilably damaged the leather on my IRs, but after a few solid polishes with Chamberlain’s leather milk, they came back to life and look fantastic (maybe even more so, as the salt gave them some sweet dark spots). Just to touch a bit more on the 1Ks, I must say that I haven’t had many of the issues that users have complained of. While the CXL has creased a bit on the inside of my left boot (from the tilt of my foot while driving), I haven’t had near the amount of overall creasing I’ve seen on a few pair out in internet land. As well, the leather soles have held up fantastically, as they are free of cracks, holes, and separation. This all through a ton of hard wear in the pouring rain and on gravel-laden roads. I do take to a bit more care to treat and condition the 1Ks, as they just seem a bit more fragile. They are a much lighter boot (and indeed more comfortable) than the IRs and are much easier to dress up. So, you get a little here and give a little there. Both awesome boots and I highly recommend owning both. Great video, by the way.
@Stridewise
@Stridewise 6 лет назад
Hey Daniel I really appreciate your writing out such a well thought out comment! I love how many guys own both pairs, like I said it's super common to want both. It is, of course, subjective on the aesthetics side. Wolverine is def more versatile and more dressy, so I can see that being paramount for a lot of guys. You're right that Chromexcel really is so easy to scratch up, I almost want to call it a dressy leather because it gets beat sooo easily. Of course a lot of guys like the look of worn in , beat up shoes - and CXL will definitely give them that, haha. I do want to emphasize (and maybe should have done a better job of emphasizing in the video) that I don't think ALL 1Ks are bad quality, rather that the quality *control* at Wolverine isn't great. There are a lot of great pairs out there, but they seem to let a lot of iffy ones through the cracks. Thanks again for your comment!

Great video. I am an Iron Ranger owner and I'm really happy with them. I think the toe cap looks great and really gives the boot a unique, old-fashioned look. The break in is no joke. They were uncomfortable the first couple of weeks. Now that the cork sole is properly molded to my foot, they're super comfortable. My only advice to a prospective buyer would be to try them on in a shop rather than buying over the Internet. The sizing is different from any other shoes I've owned. They are a full two sizes less than my running sneakers.

Thanks for your fine review. I own 3 pair of Iron rangers and one pair of Wolverine 1000 mile. I've had them all for over 3 years or more. The 1000M are the brown wingtip. The leather is fantastic. It's softer than the IRs. Mine has not creased like yours. Much more smooth, even with over 3 yrs of wear, but I would welcome that look. It has character. One note. I immediately had a commando soul and heel installed on my 1000m. I do a lot of street walking on pavement and leather souls chew up within months. The commando soul is going strong after 3 years of wear. The IR are a different boot to me. Much more sturdy and solid. They have a weight and a sound that makes them feel very masculine. I think every man should own a pair. I feel the same about the Beckman. I have two pair of those. Great boots as well. I also own Alden Indy, Viberg, Allen Edmunds, Trickers...the IRs remain a very central place in my wardrobe. Feel free to ask questions. Thanks again.

Every 1000 mile resole video that I watch on RU-vid shows that there is a steel shank. The 1000 Mile is also available with Vibram half soles, and now a full lug sole. I prefer the fit of the Iron Ranger mainly because of the lower heel. These look more like work boots, so they are good kick around boots. I prefer the look of the 1000 Mile mainly because of the upper leather. Horween CXL is known for heavy creasing, but it is also soft, durable leather.

For you younger folks, let's cut to the chase. Redwing has been making the Iron Ranger the same way for a hundred years for good reason. He shows us he's had the Wolverine's for less than a year and the heel is falling off? I doubt the heel has ever fallen off the Iron Ranger since 1920.
@JustClaude13
@JustClaude13 4 года назад
The heel on the Wolverine is bonded, which is durable and reliable...most of the time. The Iron Ranger appears to have a nailed heel, which will come off when someone pries it off with tools.
@stevehollwedel5709
@stevehollwedel5709 4 года назад

@@stevehollwedel5709 I've heard that the American 1,000 mile boots have a bonded heel and 270 degree welt. My Chinese 1,000 Mile boots are nailed and 360 degree. And with a 1,000 Mile lug sole that is better for what I do than the standard leather sole, but not as fancy. I bought them for work, so I'm a little flexible on stylishness.

I sell shoes for a living and some customers like wolverine and some favorite Irish setter/red wing from customer reviews and my experience with several other manufactures I feel that I can pretty safely say there is not a significant quality difference in equally priced boots from red wing or wolverine there is however can be differences in the fit of the boot that can make them more or less comfortable to different users e.g. some people prefer more flexible footwear, some prefer stiffer. My advice would be to go to a store that sells a wide variety of boots and try on every boot in the category of boot your looking for that's in your price range and pick the one that fits the best and then properly take care of your boots and don't abuse them
@samuelt2072
@samuelt2072 5 лет назад
For people that wear work boots as a fashion statement just about anything will do. I make my decision on this matter based on actual on-the-job situations, and Red Wing works for me. There are so many variables here: some people can get by with cheap boots; others have problems with expensive boots. The main thing is, go to a real shoe (not an outlet, or discount...) store, try on different boots, "test drive" them and then, buy them AT THE SHOE STORE!!! (No cheating, and going back to the discount store!!) Two old sayings: - you get what you pay for - good shoes/good back; bad shoes/bad back. A lot of people don't believe that, but it's true (unless you're a mason, and they always have back problems!)
@johncarr5570
@johncarr5570 2 года назад
I would love to own either boot. Real world prices in early 2022 show Iron Rangers at $350 with no discounts available anywhere. The Wolverines can be found on sale at $250. (It gets confusing to me though since Wolverine has many subtlety different versions). Based on THAT, the 1000 Mile boot might be the real winner.

I have over 40 years of heavy constructon and steel fabrication work in a shop making lock gates for mississippi river. The red wings were great for walking steel, welding, outdoor construction for 20 of those years. In the shop they were not comfortable,but held up until the toes wore thru to the steel from kneeling on concrete and steel. When i switched to wolverine, it was an incredably difference in comfort, but the soles wore out after two or three years, about half as long as the red wings. Its a trade off between comfort and duarability. Then a few years before i retired, i bought a pair of timberlands and the comfort level was unmatched. I still have a pair of red wings that i wear for yard work,and mc riding with a worn thru toe on the right boot that are 25+ years old, another pair of wolverines the same way about 15 years old, but for every day i still wear the timberlands. Hope this is helpful to someone

My favorite boots are the Red Wing blacksmith! I have them in the broad oil slick and they're gorgeous, they age extremely well, and are built as tough as the iron ranger which I have three of (Amber, oxblood, and hawthorne). I also own a Beckman in black Featherstone. I've noticed minimal greasing however the shoes are a bit tough to put on. But Red Wing is so great that even though I purchased them as factory seconds from a third party seller, they told me to take them to my local Red Wing store and they installed speed hooks FOR FREE. RED WINGS FOR LIFE!

Can you explain the steel shank and what purpose it serves? Does it make the boot less comfortable to wear because it's more rigid? My feet are flat so having a steel arch support doesn't sound comfortable. Great video.
@Stridewise
@Stridewise 6 лет назад
A shank is meant to make it more comfortable in a sense - it gives stability and arch support, helps maintain the boot's shape and integrity throughout your stride and throughout its life. A lot of people consider it the most important part of a shoe. It helps support the arch while the insole and midsole mould to the shape of your foot

I do like my iron rangers but there are some things with them. 1) The support for them is minimal. Minimal arch support and the ankle support is nonexistent. You could lop off the top 3-4 inches and it'd be the exact same thing. 2) Their footbed and lack of support seems to allow a little more foot slippage while walking. 3) I have their vibrams, there is no shock absorption. You're walking on planks of wood. I do like wearing them, I forget when I wear them for 12 hour days. Personally, White's Service are much better at giving you foot and ankle support

Welt stitching on both so they can be resoled after heavy use. 1000 Mile was less expensive by 50 bucks (120 compared to 170 based) Wolverine is much lighter , didn't crease as these in the video but the Beckman are like wearing rocks at first, you have to break those puppies in. Red Wings definitely feel like you can heel kick through a wall. 1000 Mile Addison were more comfortable and can be dressed up or down. Mine has the full Vibram soles and is very comfortable for a maximum of 8-10 hours of being my feet, any longer it's going to be a problem. Sizing wise I am normally an 11, and bought a 10 1/2 and they are now perfect for wearing with thicker socks this coming winter (I tried it with the thick socks last week). This was a great review of the two boots, during my research I was also considering the Wolverines, and am glad I opted for the Red Wings IR.

I really agree with your thoughts on these boots. The wolverine 1000 boots were a bit disappointing to me due to the extreme creasing of the leather. I have a pair of iron rangers and they’re okay. I was truly blown away by the quality of Helm Boots. I highly recommend their brand as I’ve found their chromexcel leather to be of better quality. They look fantastic!

One key thing that sold me on my Redwing Iron Rangers, is their redwing satellite stores all over the country. I get free personal service for oiling them and free shoe laces. Also after about 2 weeks or so of breaking in and another month of breaking them in they are a joy to wear. Not to mention gorgeous looking.

Iorn Ranger all day. Compared across most heritage boot brands Red Wings are not #1 for comfort but in my opinion if your paying hundreds of dollars I want my boot to age very well and handle anything that comes at it. A boot is supposed to be footwear your not worried about if things go south and you find yourself in the rain, snow, or a dirt road. Not saying I would take either on a trek through a mountainside but I want to know they could do it.

Team wolverine. Tried on both, and the red wings felt like pure torture. I used the balm Wolverine sells for the 1000 miles before putting them through hard wear. Not experiencing as much creasing as you are. I’d recommend reaching out to wolverine, because that heel should definitely not do that through normal wear.
@Stridewise
@Stridewise 6 лет назад
Yeah, like I said in the video the Wolverine is definitely easier to wear in and has better shock absorption on the heel. Not saying every Wolverine shoe is poor quality, I'm saying their quality *control* isn't great - I shouldn't have gotten a pair like this.

I own both and I always going to choose 1000 mile wolverine. Out of the box they are comfortable, the leather feel good like wearing a good baseball glove. Not to say Redwing isn't good, but I went to 4 to 5 month trying to break those boots in, I had to buy redwing wooden boots spreader to help be expand the Redwing Ranger boot, which was an extra $70. SO that's something you have to keep in mind, it take time to break them in and if you anything like me that works in the office you have to bring an extra pair of shoe with you because the breaking in process is harsh.
@diaspo

Pro tip: When buying Redwings, DON'T buy a half size down if comfort is a consideration. Buy your regular size and invest in a quality pair of in-soles. I recommend Superfeet orthotic insoles (orange or green depending on your arch). They're fairly pricey but are amazing. I spent years in army boots, where I learned the value of insoles. Wearing boots without them is just plain masochistic.

Ive been wearing my 1000 miles for going on 5 years. Of course ive been on and off throughout the years, but theyre going strong. One of the first thing i did was install a rubber front sole so that may have saved my leather sole. The sole reason for this is so that i can wear them when it rains without worrying about leather soles getting soaked with water. As i see it, i see these two boots totally different with different buyers. Wolverines are more dressy occasion boots, while redwings are work boots-hence why construction of the boots are different. There are quiet few occasions where i wore my 1000 miles to fancy restaurants with casual sports jacket where i cant even imagine doing the same in iron ranger.

CXL creases that’s the nature of it. However it looks like you have a lot of loose grain on your 1000 miles which means not so good clicking. Red Wing used their own tannery which makes for better quality control. As far as build quality IMO RW are better than 1000 miles and Iron Rangers are built like a tank. I agree with you on comfort. Just got a pair of Alden Innsbruck Indy’s and can’t believe how comfortable they are compared to my RW’s. I wanted to step up in my next purchase and gave the Alden’s a shot being close to 2x as much as RW heritage. I have to say that the price difference is well worth it especially when it comes to comfort.

I do have a tonnn of loose grain on the CXL, Wolverine doesn't seem to inspect too closely when selecting their leathers. A lot of people have great 1Ks, I got one of the not-so-great ones. Alden is certainly a step up from Red Wing, I love the comfort of my Indys and the leather is super supple. The Innsbruck Indys are the 403s, right? Chromexcel? Iron Ranger wins my vote. I've never worn the 1000 mile but I've had it in my hands and it seems more like a fashion boot. The sole is kind of a sissy thin leather and seems not as "beefy" of a boot. Red Wings are classic Made In USA and been around a long time. Their iconic stores are a big part of Americana. I've only gotten into them in the past few years but I've seen the brand all my life.
@Stridewise

I am an old iron worker. When you are walking around, 400 feet in the air , on steel four inches wide, you need to be able to feel what you are stepping on, and you need to have the stability and ankle support to instantly shift your weight. Red Wing gives you both. When your life depends on your feet, always Red Wing. No competition, not even a question. Red Wing

My thoughts. I think it is the Iron Ranger that is the boot that does not know it's role. Let me state that I have (had) many pairs of each brand over the years, I have had success with both. Second - if your Wolverine boots are not living up to the game, send it back - unless they were a product gift, that is money out of pocket and any reputable boot maker will address it. Next - I bought the 1000 mile (Evans for more traction) because I wanted a comfortable boot that could go between the office and the field. I often times find myself needing a boot than can cover both needs. The Evans (1000 mile) has been brilliant at that task (and no I do not have all the leather issue you speak about). The Iron Ranger on the other hand does not play both rolls, it looks too burly to play in the office, and it is not anything close to something I would put on for a 14 hour day in the work place. For that sort of thing I would use 8138 if I have a full day of concrete (which I own), or the 8146 if I need something that crips the life out of every surface touches (which I own), and if I have a day of muck, rain, and elements they all stay in the closet and I roll with something that has Gore-Tex in the boot. The Iron Ranger has not enough traction, or support to be a world class work boot, and nowhere near the style to be something you can dress up when required. The Iron Ranger may be a well made boot from a respectable boot maker; in the end it is nothing more than a casual boot for beer trips, grocery outings, and trips to the park with your kids. I am not saying that a life long lasting boot is not the right choice for that, and think that more Americans should purchase this boot for that rather than poorly made sports shoes made by crying children if far away lands, I am just saying that it in my opinion it fails to meet to opinions of the creator of this video, and if you are looking for a multi-purpose boot, or a proper work boot this review may have some issues you want to address before making your purchase.

@pavanmex
@pavanmex 4 года назад
Not a fair or well-informed review at all. I am a bootmaker myself but have NOTHING to do with Red Wing or Wolverine. Here are my observations on the stitching comparison. The Red Wing boot has a separate heel counter, it does require three rows of stitching to prevent it from coming off. The 1000 mile boot has the quarter which goes all the way back and there is nothing to come off except the foxing in the back, which is held with the stitches in the back. Also, the Red Wing boot is stitched with a Puritan machine which is chain stitch, the 1000 mile is stitched with a regular lock stitch machine with back tacks. The Red Wing has a separate toe, which requires it to be stitched and a four-row stitch does not make any difference if your first two-row stitch starts coming off (rare). The Wolverine boot does not require stitching on the toe as it is a full vamp. The Wolverine boot has the bluchers held by the box stitch which we call the bar-tack to hold the bluchers and prevent them from coming off the vamp, the Red Wing boot because of the Puritan stitch does not require a bar-tack. The durability of the sole is definitely a Red Wing winner, leather soles usually cannot outperform synthetic or man-made soles.

Your comment reminded me of stubble burning in my younger days. Working with the ground smoldering underfoot, leather soles were a must. One of the guys bought a new pair of boots for the job and the soles parted company with the uppers after 15 minutes. The leather was fine, but the nylon stitching holding them to the uppers had melted. Unfortunately I cant remember who made the boots. A similar thing happened to a guys jeans a few years later when we were stomping the fire down at the end of the day. Again nylon stitching melted and the inside leg seams disintegrated almost up to the knee.

I have a video on Chippewa! I wasn't a huge fan, but they're fine ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1IKWHgWVqWg.html

Chippewas are good. Very comfortable out of the box but the leather is thinner and the sole is cheaper. More of a throw away rather than a lifetime boot. Love mine though.

So it sounds like you are saying you would get the same size in both boots. I have 9 in my Iron Rangers... I should get 9 in 1000 mile? Is one feel larger than the other? Would you have went with a different size after you wore them for awhile because of stretching? Thank you!

No they're both the same size for me. Not everyone has the same experience (some go a whole size down in IRs) but they're both 11 for me!

@@Stridewise Yes, I had to go down a full size in my Iron Rangers. I wanted to order 1000 miles on line but wasn't sure If I should order the same size as my IR but it sounds like they run the same.

Try Rokker boots: different level of aesthetics, performance, protection, quality, style, and finish. I have 4 pairs of Iron Rangers but these Rokkers much better. They are motorcycle boots but come in a few styles, for the $$ well worth it

Awesome comparison! Would be interesting to compare the Red Wing Beckman Round/Flatbox with the Wolverine 1000 and looking forward to that if it happens haha

Yeah those are super similar boots! Maybe down the line, but for now it makes sense to compare the most popular varieties. Thanks for commenting, Daniel!

Great video. Like you I am lucky enough to own both. Can I also throw another pair into the mix? How about LL Bean Katahadin boots? I have a pair of them too and really rate them. I could not pick between the boots as each has days when one is best but they change around! Solution was bigger boot storage!

Ohh dude I just got a pair of LL Bean Hawthorne boots! I can't get Katahadin right after Hawthorne! Maybe down the track :)

Stridewise you owe it to yourself! You deserve the boots! Funny thing is Hawthornes next on my radar! I look on them as an investment? They will last a lifetime, make you happy every time you wear them. Look good and never let you down- what can be wrong with that?

Ugh look at those boots I just Googled them and it would have made way more sense to get them. But the Hawthornes are more popular so my video on them will get more views, so it makes more sense to use them!
