Thousands of Superfund sites have been identified across the United States, many of them located in communities of color and low income communities that face barriers to relocation. We spoke with environmental scientist Lizette Ruiz, a resident of South Gate, California, to learn more about the impact of environmental racism and what it's like living around a Superfund site today.

In the late 1970s, residents of Love Canal, a working-class neighborhood in Niagara Falls, New York, discovered that their homes, schools and playgrounds were built on top of a former chemical waste dump, which was now leaking toxic substances and wreaking havoc on their health. Through interviews with many of the extraordinary housewives turned activists, POISONED GROUND: THE TRAGEDY AT LOVE CANAL shows how they effectively challenged those in power, forced America to reckon with the human cost of unregulated industry, and created a grassroots movement that galvanized the landmark Superfund Bill.

Race, socio-economic status, and environmental injustice directly impact these communities in terms of their health outcomes as well as their quality of health. Communities are not all created equal. In the United States, some communities are continuously polluted while the government gives little to no attention. "

@purplestarglow none of what you said proves racism in fact it shows the lack of racism.. when words like disproportionately are used it shows that people of all races were effected by a particular event..wouldn't it be better to focus on fixing the issue rather than wasting time on why one group is more of a victim than another group who experienced the same events

All these freeways and businesses were also there when the city of South Gate was predominately white. Sorry, I just don't understand how it's racism. Whites also lived with the same pollution, same flight paths, same freeways, same mfg plants/businesses before the area became predominately Hispanic. It's BAD when it happens to whites and Hispanics but racism?

So, why call it racism? Deal with it for what it really is--pollution. You are doing good work, and, as you said you chose to stay in the area for family, etc. So carry on as all of the rest of us do, and clean up the environment.
