@melvin. You say that like American Indians are treated badly or forced to live in certain areas. They have the exact same rights and opportunities as any American citizen. They’re not forced to live in the tax free reservations that the American Indians govern themselves.
@@dariusblakey9061 I can tell you with certainty most of people of PR Don't believe PR will become a state anytime soon.... Most are like "I DOUBT THAT PR WILL BECOME A STATE, WHO WILL WANT US?" @@pgum123gonowplayread4 I think eventually it’s gonna be a state majority of puerto wants to be a state and a lot of Americans want it to be state only a matter of time
I'm Puerto Rican by blood and I have family from both sides from my parents living in Puerto Rico and mainland United States. Making Puerto Rico a state isn't going to change if you don't take away insular cases that utilizes anglo saxon principles, the control of our budget, provide fair taxes for Puerto Ricans, our land, our right to vote, benefits that mainland American people recieve we should receive on the island like Medicare, pardon on the debt or atleast a fair payment amount, and much more issues that are happening today. Most importantly you got to remove the corruption of government from both the US Congress and in Puerto Rico because this is going om for 100+ years and we're sick of it.
Can you define or post the source of precisely what "Anglo Saxon principles" are? The statement makes it sound as if 5th century Germanic people moving to Puerto Rico.
Spanish is the official language of Puerto Rico, right? I think people forget that if the US had not taken over, you might have less rights though also.
She made great questions to Pierluisi and he had no answers....she nailed him and he had no answers and could not prove how Statehood will change PR's economic situation.
That’s idiotic, how will statehood favor Puerto Rico? Just look at all the states. Puerto Rico will have two senators and 6 congressmen representing them in Washington. Plus more benefits will come to the island. Make no mistake about it, statehood of the status quo is way better than independence. And if you doubt, just go to our neighboring islands who have better resources than we do. I guarantee corruption and poverty will destroy the island. Just look at the history of Puerto Rico before the United States took them over. I will like for whoever is declaring independence, to outline everything that can happen for Puerto Rico in terms of benefits for the people of Puerto Rico. Thank god the majority know the real deal. The last peblecite 52% wanted statehood and 48% wanted the status quo. Only 8 percent wanted statehood. People know the truth, independence will never ever win!
Totally agree! Totally disillusioned with someone that says 'we only need to convince fifty plus one, but I admit that parliamentary rules require 60'. Well, do you have to convince only 51 or 60? This, is how politicians talk when they have no answers. He says, 'How come we are citizens of the most democratic nation in the world,, yet we don't vote for the President, yet we have no voting representation in congress. "It makes no sense". Really? 🤔Either the Gov is an idealistic teen or this rhetoric guides his political power. Because that Superpower called the US doesnt want us! It's like going after the person you're in love with, if after a while they haven't say yes, they don't want you! Otherwise, it would have been done already. Flash to the future 25 yrs from now; Puerto Rico celebrates another Plebiscite!
I was not born in Puerto Rico. My grandparents arrived in New York when they were teenagers. After my mother was born, my grandparents tried moving back to the island, but they couldn't find a job over the two years they stayed. I have only visited Puerto Rico as a tourist. However, it still feels like home to me. My favorite memories are seeing mi familia en Caguas, or walking through El Yunque, and getting fresh coconut water along the small mom and pop shops along the way. I want to go back so bad. Seeing videos like these hurt. They hurt my heart and soul. I messaged my local representative to consider statehood when the most recent referendum showed most wanted it. I was mad at the current state of the island. I'm not so sure if statehood would be the best option now. All I know is that the situation as it is now is not acceptable. Something needs to change. Puerto Rico needs to become independent or a state. Something needs to be done. The Jones Act needs to be abolished. The tax breaks to rich corporations from the years of Operation Bootstrap need to go. The language is already fading. Me and my cousins are the first who don't speak Spanish fluently. I still maintain my culture. The music, the food, the history. I don't want these things to dissappear too. I don't want my home to be destroyed because the people in power don't care. Because there are so many people who do care, and they are the ones who need change the most, because their lives depend on it. Somos de aquí, como el coquí.
Im in the same boat my family is from peñuelas I’m want to move to Puerto Rico and start a business and help out the people del el Pueblo I’m 23 and I want Puerto Rico to become independent Ik it not easy but we loose our culture is we become a State so many people are leaving our beautiful island we should go back to the island and do what we can

I understand you exactly, brother. My grandparents, similarly, moved to NY. I visited Puerto Rico recently and I was overwhelmed with how much it felt like home. I am lucky enough that I am able to move to the island and maintain my current job until I can find work locally.
Agreed! Puerto Ricans should Be able to make their own decision on if they would like to be a state or be independent or be their own sovereign nation. If the USA does not support Puerto Rico’s right to vote then the people of Puerto Rico are prisoners of the United States!
Puerto Rico residents pay more in federal income taxes every year than do residents of six U.S. states: "From 1998 up until 2006, when Puerto Rico was hit by its present economic recession, Puerto Rico consistently paid more than $4 billion annually in federal taxes and impositions into the national fisc." This was more that the IRS collected from taxpayers in six States of the Union: Vermont, Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, and Alaska, as well as the Northern Mariana Islands.[17][18] People of the island pay too much taxes to the USA, they are comfortable the way they are, since in the USA, nobody owns their properties, if they do not pay taxes, the government will auction them. On the island, people who own a very expensive property pays, the ones who own a humble house in the countryside as I understand do not pay taxes. They are afraid of these people losing their properties if unable to pay property taxes.
Really prove your point naming Leona "the Queen of mean" Helmsley, she was investigated and convicted of federal income tax evasion and other crimes in 1989.
By the way, neither Ricky Martin, Bad Bunny, nor Residente live on the island. Where do they live? Yep, the one country they criticize. USA. Pure hypocrisy.
I have to disagree with your comment. I myself live in Germany but have my parents and family in Puerto Rico, plus an American passport that allows me to have an opinion on the island’s political status. People must understand that not staying in Puerto Rico doesn’t mean we can’t have an opinion… either statehood or independence. Further, while holding an American passport, one must file taxes each year from wherever country you live in the world, which grants you this right (even to vote ;))
I’ve been to Puerto Rico a handful of times since 2010, and I fell in love with the country, not for tourism but because when I was there, feel African and Latin culture permeates everything I saw… As a then 20-something AA man from the US, I knew very little about the island on my first visit. but spending the first trips 2weeks in Utuado, I quickly learned about the Utuado massacre and saw Puerto Ricans looking exactly like me, which was dope, Learning about Tainos etc, honestly made me desire to live there, and not to be some bogus foreigner, just to respectfully learn/live there.
Was born in New York raised in Puerto Rico went to Junior High and High School and I work in Puerto Rico and I say statehood is the way I don't know why Puerto Ricans are saying that the state is abusing them if Puerto Ricans are governed by Puerto Ricans so we are abusing ourselves
And who do you think it is that tells Puerto Rican leaders how to govern? It's the American Aryans. Educate yourself a little more to better understand that even in Puerto Rico, we have sellouts who believe the US is the ONLY country in the world that can do wonders. Heck, try moving into a pretty White neighborhood in the states...You know damn well they don't want you or our people anywhere near them and on top of that, they take our land.
NO, thank you . The truth is that Majority of Puerto Rican’s DONT want the independence, So sad that a few people that says that (including artist, singers that don’t live in the island, live in the USA ) think can represent us. So thank you but not thank you
For all those who feel insecure and think that Puerto Rico is not capable of taking care of itself...all you see in Puerto Rico has been done in majority by Puerto Ricans and not ExtraTerrestials or foreign labor..only ignorant minds with no education or commonsence would think that we are not capable of surviving if not for the USA which by the way gives economical help to many foreign countries. There is a movement called Reunification between Puerto Rico and Spain where we will return to being a Province of Spain as we were with all the same rights as before 1898 and all the rights of the other 17 Provinces . We would be number 18 however before 1898 we were the first. We would be the gate to the Americas from all of Europe therefore honoring our namesake PUERTO RICO. Chupate esa en lo que te mondo la otra..Wepa

No is not a third world country. But is happening. A lot Europeans go to Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico and are buying land in front the beach and built hotels and the beaches become private just for guest and we can’t enjoy it anymore. Because the beach become private and belongs to them. In the long term with the climate change the ocean will rip off the walls of the hotel structure. Is already happening in Puerto Rico and Mexico.

@@clarkhull7546 independence will worsen Puerto Ricos problems. For the one thing it will fix, it will bring 100 times the problems they never expected. All they have to do is look at the neighboring islands. Not the tourism sites. The villages and pueblos that people live in. In the DR the peso is 54 to 1 dollar, and the people make 20 K a year. That’s poverty there. And they are independent, many flee to Puerto Rico and make a better living than most Puerto Rican’s because they hustle. Look at Haiti, look at Jamaica. Are we to believe that an independent Puerto Rico can do any better than the DR? Not just my opinion, it is a fact. And no one in this platform can say something different.

Great documentary, very well done, excellent interviews! The Governor sends mixed signals, he clearly understands that the US doesn’t treat or see us as equals, that’s how colonies are treated… his solution is statehood due to fear of being a sovereign nation. He sees progress, how about Mississippi, South Carolina and other poor states? Hawaii? The natives have been displaced and many can’t afford to live there. They lost their culture, their language and their land.., Is that what the “estadistas” want?
Get rid of all those colonizers, get rid of that new governor, gain independence from the USA & allow my beautiful people to solve their own problems with the new leaders. Every real Hawaiian I've ever known told me the same things, do not allow statehood, or you will lose your culture all together.
Thanks to bringing up that not all is good and right and in the 50 states however the issue is the intent of the politicians and what way and what would they actually like to address
Agree 1000%, and all puerto ricans in the US should also return, or be branded traitor who served the colonizers, i wish BLM have this mentality, y'know move back to africa with pride or something like that, im asian, and we love colonizers, so we will stay in the US and take care of the thing you cool and awesome people left behind, i support PR people in their quest to gain their independence and return to motherland and preserve their culture, all of them.
@@jameslevin9720 You do realize that is about a few centuries since many of the Black American ancestry came from the African continent and that for people who support BLM whether they still look black or their ancestry somehow makes them look white now, it would be near a death sentence to be sent off to the African continent because lack of knowledge in the region's culture, a person may not realize that they are defended from one clan so when (BUT RATHER IF) they choose to live in a certain region of Africa and miraculously be able to start learning the language and a few basics their child might accidentally be born with the racial features of a clan that would not be commonly seen in that area plus the outsider thing Moreover, whether for PR or for people of black ancestry, YOU DO realize that the upheaval would cause an economic backlash of GREAT proportions right? And let me tell you a little something, some people side with the US in the PR independence debate maybe not completely of their own solitary individual fault, notice the focus on solitary individual, as it is the job of each and every person to learn what they can but the things related to unfortunate or greedy politician that sides with the US being swiped clean off of the history books, oh and there is also the fact that PR right now, as it is, has issues with people's jobs something maybe not completely characterized, but lets just say you put an add of looking for help for blah type of jobs, then you get tons of calls of people wanting the work, obviously you are one of the few (most of the time) of those work ads that that worker may have found... as in there are lots of issues finding a job... also, you have a particular skill set, hope you have happy hunting finding a work place that exists that works with your skill set, pays at least a semi livable wage, near your home (ish), and actually has room to hire you Also, as a rule of thumb, anything that comes suddenly to become the new hope for the PR insular economy will receive backlash of sorts that will either A make it into an average working part of the economy and not the hope B fake hope C completely destroyed is the dream for that part of economy to continue for more than a few years Also, what time frame? what time frame would you propose? What ways do you think the forcing of people back into ancestral lands will have in the conditions of the government forcing that exodus? As in will it become an authoritarian government? Will it lead to some kind of backlash which would lead to economic backlash because of the exodus itself? Something like that?
@@jameslevin9720 I 1000% agree with you too. Stay here with the colonizers that hate you too. I see what your people are doing in Africa. Not all are like you or have your mentality. Question, are you okay with an epidemic, that police officers have been killing black people for hundreds of year's since the "overseers" (officer's) did in slavery times? & don't answer my question with one of your own questions, yes or no will suffice, & why if you answered yes?

@@Edlas22158 is going to be the worst poor in puerto rico than Mississippi if puerto rico become statehood and lose the culture of puerto rico national identity and burden forever is really going to be sad for my grandmother island I hope people from puerto rico make a better choice which side one independence the last Latin American and still save puerto rico national identity two states hood to stop be puerto rican Latin American be united states full citizenship and sing about united states nationality song is going to be hard for people in puerto rico to understand about alot united states living in puerto rico more they the one they for statehood and kick the people out of their island and taking over the island.
@@Edlas22158 You're also comparing a state to an island that has been exploited for 500 years? Who's population is greater than DC and has fought every major war? Wow. Just flat out stereotyping, and prejudice.
@@Edlas22158 no, darling, the leaders in welfare are the jews, then Dominicans. Get your facts straight. FYI, Puerto Ricans have made NUMEROUS contributions in all areas that have benefited the U.S. n the world.
@@lautaroaguilar9584 I feel bad for people like you. You have to spew your ignorance and hate on the internet simply because you hate your own life. Life sucks, get over it.
The culture will become destroyed if it becomes a state , it will be a Hawaii 2.0 , the language will die and the natives will be pushed away . The island needs independence
This is just or similar to what happened to Hawaii. Gated communities have been in Puerto Rico for over 30 years in many towns in the island, were many Puerto Ricans have homes. Dorado has always been the home for many Americans as lawyers, CEOs, supervisor of many companies.
hmm, being free or becoming a state. I choose freedom everyday of the week especially on Sunday. we as Puerto Rican's should decide our own fate. becoming a state has its benefits but also its negatives. there are many luxuries that we have that we take for granted. Every great Nation has its own problems and they fix their problems as one Nation. Just think all the people who have homes on the island for a minute. If Puerto Rico became a state do you think they could afford the same taxes they pay as mainland? We have a real chance to be free of the U.S. and you want to give all away to become a state. We have some of the smartest people in the world in Puerto Rico that love their island that want to see its people come together to face all their problems head on and not be totally dependent on another Nation for survival.
If PR becomes a state it will be better financially for all people of the island and it will mean a better PR economically. People will be able to live better lives. Without the US, PR may become like Cuba or Venezuela or just extremely poor
Muy bien. Continuemos educando, produciendo y siendo autosuficientes. Ese es el único remedio verdadero. Mientras estemos mantenidos, el control estará fuera de nuestras manos…
Prayers for Puerto Ricans. They caused Maria and earthquakes for people to get scared and leave their land. God got them Money is the Rule of all evil to do these things their riches will crumble for doing what they did. Why are all the rich PR stars not fighting for them?
I miss my little Island-country and my family there. Economic realities and lack of opportunity took me away from my home, but I hope to someday return to stay and be laid to rest when the time comes, in my beloved terruñito.
PR definitely resembles a colony. Whether they become a state, independent, or stay as is, the people of PR need to be the ones who decide. Not the US Congress.
This video leaves out a lot of information for instance, many of the properties they say are being bought would never purchased by locals because they are just too expensive. Also, Dorado was always a place where the wealthy lived and wanted to live, nothing new. And finally many of the people that are complaining about the people that are moving in are not paying don’t mention that they themselves don’t pay taxes because they don’t make enough money. I know this because I lived on the island for many years and the majority of people someone find a way to never pay taxes. Talk to anyone that lived and they might tell you the same.
they're taken advantages of the chaos in Puerto Rico that has occurred since the bankruptcy and hurricane Maria along side of the earthquake period !!!!! sometime I wonder if the catastrophes were planed out for there advantages
If Israel can be a autonomous and potent country in middle of a desert then Puerto Rico should be granted its independence to create its own destiny and maintain ties with its former colonizer or if it chooses not to.
I'm not US citizen nor Puertorican. But from the outside, it seems fair to me that the people from Puerto Rico ONLY have a saying in this matter as the young man says towards the end ... so the documentary might be one sided, but from the right side perspective ;-)
@@O1162-l2l Well it's normal to have an opinion on matters you hear about, no? ;-) As I have an opinion on the Vietnam War for example. And I'm sure you do, too.
@@Alex_BF First thanks for a reasonable reply. And I agree that people from PR should decide, I was born and bred there. And I assure you, they are only showing one side. There are A LOT of people who are in favor of statehood.
If Puerto Rico becomes independent, expect to see China's Belt and Road initiative come to the Caribbean. That wouldn't be good because PR's infrastructure is so bad, it would be impossible for them to turn down the offer.
In Puerto Rico we have the Small Business Administration and no one is consindering using the benefits of that institution to create your own business they are relying to work for someone, we have many universities and many graduates in many fields like Business Administration ,engineers and bioengineers, human resources, law, many graduates from University of P.R. in Mayaguez are hired by NASA. Every Puertorrican registered to vote should decided their future, not a small group of people. Every time we have elections we say (Mi voto es sagrado y se respeta)
I am an American native who will be visiting the island for the second time in my life for vacation in less than a month. I can’t say anything but the finest things about the Puerto Rican people, their rich culture, their history, etc. They’ve contributed so much to American society, they’ve served bravely in our military in most of our major conflicts, they’re our teachers, nurses, doctors, lawyers, police officers and firefighters and they’ve produced amazing musicians, athletes, actors and celebrities who’ve all contributed to the American story. However, I’m a strong believer that the Puerto Rican people themselves should be the ultimate arbiters of their own destiny whether it be statehood, a more enhanced, equitable and representative version of the status quo (territory), or independence. I personally favor statehood for Puerto Rico. They would be able to vote in presidential elections, have fairer representation in Congress, and have far greater access to federal funding for infrastructure, jobs, healthcare, and education to help pull the commonwealth out the debt that’s crippling its economy and bring political stability to the island. However, I know as someone who is not a native Puerto Rican, my voice only carries so much weight in the conversation. I only hope for the best for the future of the Puerto Rican people.
Voting doesn’t matter. In case you’ve been living under a rock, the Biden administration didn’t win the election of 2020. He cheated his way there just like all the ones before trump
Your comment it’s the perfect educational comment for other Americans that don’t know all those details. Like serve in the military. To much ignorance sadly. Thanks for the appreciation!
? oka, tell me, did you know that the final draft of the PR constitution was implemented without it being overlooked by actual citizens of the island til the signing what were your thoughts about the conspiracies surrounding the fathers of each of the political parties ? Like when you found out about the Opium and the we will tell the world about your drug usage regarding LMM? Or any of the others?
They current dynamic between Puerto Rico is actually similar to that of the dynamic between the UK and the US in the 18th century. High taxes, no representation, etc.
