Official trailer for our new documentary, Fighting Sticks of Arnis. Filmed on location in the Philippines and featuring more than twelve grandmasters of the Filipino Martial Arts. Our guides Datu Tim Hartman and Bobby Taboada from the USA help us to explore Arnis from Manila to Cebu to Negros. Along the way we discover a multitude of styles and systems. Many are known worldwide and have many thousands of followers and some have hardly spread beyond families and villages. To watch the full documentary film and for details of the instructors and grandmasters featured please visit emptymindfilms.com

Is anyone lobbying for BT to be a recipient of the The National Artist Award? Let’s be honest, Arnis was almost dying. Many of the young Filipinos don’t know this art of fighting. It’s only making a come back in social media and that just so inspiring. His contribution and effort to make this global against the culture of new generation playing games on cellphones and computers is a huge feat! Really, I thought our Filipino form of martial art is about to be erased in history and now I see a huge following (even from foreigners), videos upon videos, gyms popping up and mainstream media using the art on fight scenes. Just wow! The National Artist Award is the highest distinction bestowed upon Filipino Artists whose body of work is recognized by their peers and more importantly by their countrymen as sublime expression of Philippine music, dance, theatre, visual arts, literature, film and media, arts, architecture and design.

Difference of MMA and FMA. MMA was designed mainly to knock, incapacitate or make him surrender in a fight. FMA was created long ago mainly for killing the intruders that invade our country in other words is an killing art for war. many do not accept the fact that it is the true nature of FMA that is why most of them switch to MMA because its more realistic or it concentrate on 1-1 sparring. im not bashing mma for it is a good self defense but the difference is in our country. here you can be killed just because they are envious of you or you're a member of the opposing group. here when there is a "fight" that means someone will "die".
@1michaelish

mark anthony andales I trained in arnis and doce pares and am very aware of it's lethality and purpose I would never trade it for mma I believe it's more realistic and practical in self defense situations.

True specially the old rural styles from the mountains, I trained in Panag-Didjang from my WW2 vet grandfather, a single opening and you are dead, we used to play and spar near the bamboo overgrowths and woodlands not to mention in knee deep mud whene we wre kids, training us to use the terrain to bottleneck the movement of the opponent was vital, this saved my life a lot of time and I can't see myself trading them for any other.
@11bsavage64
@11bsavage64 3 года назад
I just bought some it's more weapons training for me. The thing is you have people who are trained to fight and you have people who are not. If you just have 1 opponent who is using sticks all you need to do is get close and nullify his striking capabilities. Then you can grapple and either throw him or do a takedown. This is all if there is no knives and it is just 1vs1. grappling and being good at it take quite some time, most people do not know the 1st thing of grappling, but subduing a non is easy depending on your skill level. The stick fighting is cool but once you do that you have to remember to strike, do combos and maintain distance.
@kaen4299
@kaen4299 3 года назад
@@11bsavage64 The sticks are a replacement for actual weapons. What type of fight are you talking about? Because if someone really tries to get you and use Kali, he will stab or slash you with something that has a sharp blade. Moreover, have fun trying to close distance against someone who is proficient in Kali. He has the range advantage, before you even think about getting into close range you will get welcomed by 10 stick hits a second. Sticks hurt like hell and depending on how hard the person can strike it can also crack your bones. Your imagination of how the fight would go is too much theory that i saw not working in real life. Empty Hand Kali is definetely inferior to modern combat sports such as MMA, BJJ or Muay Thai. Any of those would absolutely murder empty hand Kali. You should compare Kali to other weapon arts such as Fencing, Hema, Gatka, Kenjutsu, Kendo and so on. Because Kali is primarily a weapon art.

Seriously do it! Plus, you will love it. It will add so much to your life, and in ways you wouldn't initially think, either. Even if you have never trained in any martial art before, just give it a go! People write off martial arts very quickly. But when you learn a martial art, you are also learning another culture, and in many cases, a history of the people who developed said art Martial arts, especially Filipino M.A., never cease to amaze as to how much one can gain from learning it.

@11bsavage64
@11bsavage64 3 года назад
judo is good for standing and dealing with some grappling, wing chun I recommend you study on what you want out of that before thinking of pursuing, Taekwondo is good for discipline and kicking, TKD also depends on which still? there is WTF which is sport TKD and ITF which is a bit more like Karate. WTF mainly focuses on leg kicks and ITF you can kick and punch to the face. Arnis is just more weapons training, TKD school depending on which one teacher's weapons. I use nunchaku, bow staff, and sword.
