Wow. I've watched this channel grow. C'mon folks, lets get Billy up to 100,000 subcribers. He provides A LOT of valuable information. We're gonna need it.

I'm using a mix of Dutch white clover, vernal alfalfa and bulldog alfalfa for a general purpose ground cover, avoid most grasses unless I really want a grass dominated system - it has its places - I like the added dill (hoverfly food!) radishes, and I could see doing a sugar beet in the mix, too - sugars in the soil for bacteria to get busy on? SUPERCHARGE your soil. It 'beets' spreading horticultural molasses for cost, and you get some aeration as well. We have been adding sunflower and safflower in places that could use something in the herbaceous layer. Amaranth for fixing phosphorous (not that we suffer a lack of wild chenopodium) and dock, because we have it, its free, and makes a great mess of greens when I'm hungry. Fantastic for people that suffer loss of blood and calcium depletion on a regular basis (yes, ladies, I mean you) and not bad for us gents, either because we go get cut and break bones, seemingly for the fun of it sometimes 😉 There is no reason NOT to plant useful things as ground cover: Mother Nature is going to plant something, if you don't.

Thanks for sharing another very informative video my friends. We’ve got some of our property that’s wooded and we are thinking about turning it into our Silvopasture area! Ben & Denise seen it when they were here and thought it would be a great area for it. We’ve ordered seeds from that same company before as well. Thanks for sharing. 🙌🏻👍🏻🙌🏻👍🏻😊😊

I don't think that any seed is cheap these days! I've had good luck sowing a mix of white and crimson clover with tall Fescue to use between the rows in my elderberry fields. The clover fixes nitrogen so I can reduce (maybe eliminate) the amount of organic fertilizer I use. The Fescue is supposed to help hold the soil together, but I have trouble getting it to catch. I'm in North Carolina, which can be a tough place to get grass to grow well. I think the Summer gets a little too warm for the Fescue to really thrive, and the Winter gets too cold for a hot weather grass like Bermuda to thrive. My clover does very well, though, which is what I'm really after. Take care and God Bless.

Looking good. We unfortunately ended up doing the same where some areas got kinda over grazed. I'm personally in the process of cleaning out some cedar groves, is there a reason you were pulling the trees out? I'm personally looking at laying them on contour to help as biomass traps because a lot of my pastures is a similar grade to where you are or a bit steeper in some areas.
@h.s.6269
@h.s.6269 Год назад
Are your groves large enough to have usable cedar or is it more smaller trees? Cause I've heard of some homesteaders making deals with people that have those large outdoor sawmills. Where some trees can be used to barter help milling out boards, so both parties get beautiful lumber to work with.
@davidpritchett855
@davidpritchett855 Год назад
@@h.s.6269 Regrettably very little of it would be worthy of milling. For the most part it's pretty twisted and at best you may be able to get a 4x4x8 from each tree.

I love your phrases and analogies. Hard as woodpecker lips 😂 Of course the Roman's were pretty dastardly dudes and deserved for the more worthy Huns and Visigoths to kick their _sses. I'd say that that garbage grass is more akin to the Roman's and the good mix you just sowed is more like the Huns putting up a good fight against the evil taxing Roman's. That would make you Attilla!!!

So not even goats will the silver grass? I thought they were supposed to be like living lawn mowers. Willing to eat lots of stuff.
@RoyatAvalonFarms
@RoyatAvalonFarms Год назад
Goats are not lawnmowers and usually only eat grass when they are starving and cant get to herbaceous shrubs and trees. They browse the fresh green tips of bushes and tree limbs. Then move on to the next one. They will not just eat down the whole bush unless they are contained in a fenced area and then not fed anything else. They will scream and bellow like a baby that is being beaten. Blood curtling screams. Eventually they will eat the brush you want them to eat but it will be a painful process to get to it. Anyway, no goats wont eat everything and no they dont like grasses.
