Demo of the turnaround of mannequin figure armature from Loomis "Figure Drawing for All Its Worth".
This basic mannequin you would need to memorize as a 3-D structure to make useful as an art student of figure drawing.
Check out ‪@bradwynn‬ for more videos on solid figure construction using Loomis and Reilly methods of drawing.

The concept of repeating the drawings from memory is interesting. Would you apply the same concept to anatomy books? Also, is the memory method something you would recommend to beginners to work through? I know there are some schools of thought that artists shouldn't try to draw from memory until they are intermediate/advanced

Yes, Renaissance masters certainly memorized anatomy. Learning and memorizing from book knowledge is step 1. The next step is to apply your knowledge from observation in life drawing and in order to “know what you see”. After you learn anatomy, you can also invent anatomical figures from imagination.

Is the flat diagram in loomis book something i need to study in detail or just a general understanding of it?

Basically you need to memorize the anatomy of the skeleton in real life to apply it to figure drawing from life and imagination. The flat Loomis diagrams simplify some of the complexity of the visual information that can overwhelm beginners.

Have ever seen a human in real life thats 8 heads high?! I havent!!!! Jesus Christ, go outside for once, and try drawing real people!!! 8 heads, thats someone super frekin tall. Like 2 meters plus! Most people are 7 ish. 6,5. I realy havent seen a person in real life 8 heads tall... So, its not realy always good to just study books, or draw just from images. Go outside, look ay actual people!!! Youre drawing realy interesting though! Big scale. Good lines. Cool!

Yes you’re right these are idealized proportions other than fashion models most everyday people are in the 7 or 7.5 heads tall range. Michelangelo often used 8 heads as his proportion system.

It is not about the height, but more about the proportion of the figure. In his book Loomis quite literally calls it "idealistic" proportions. You can draw a person as 4 foot 3 or even 12 inches tall, with those proportions. It's not about the actual height.

@@notimportant0000 yeah, but. Thats not the point. It doesnt realy look like human. I mean, its kinda helpful. And also not. When i tried drawing from life, real humans are sooooooo varied in size, shapes, everything. There is completely different archetypes of figure shapes in real life. Tall persons are thiner. Hip and shoulder widht proportion. Its realy interesting, to just take anyone from the steeet and look up his proportions on the page... No one was 8 heads. Tall beautiful people were 7 or a little more. Fat people were 6 heads. And realy big width of pelvis and shoulders. I think there is much more beauty in this variation, because you can actualy build the character out of those things later. It teaches me alot, alot more, to just draw the same way, but with actual proportions of someone real! And this loomis looka kinda good, anc simplifiea things. But also loses all character. Life is much more interesring...

@@notimportant0000 You're right! One time I drew a short model from life who was around 5 feet tall she had ideal proportions of 8 heads tall because her head was also small in relation to her overall body.
