Turning is a fundamental skill in ice skating. Whether you're a figure skater or a hockey skater, steps and turns make up some of the components of skating skills and are essential foundational skills used at every development level. I'll introduce the basic concepts you need to learn and identify different turns, including three-turns, mohawks, counters, brackets, loops, twizzles, and Choctaws. I'll cover the importance of edge quality, body alignment, rhythm and timing, and common errors and ways you can correct them.

Oh my gosh I had no idea I was doing chocktaws during my prelim moves test! Also, agreed that twizzles freak people out, including myself. A double twizzle just feels so much more difficult than doing 4 or even 5 continuous three turns.

Isn’t great to find out you were doing choctaws?!

Hi Aimée. Just want to say I've been binge watching and repeating your videos. So much useful information, and great level of detail, whether for breaking down elements or blades of skates. I just started skating at 44 nine months ago. As I'm in Canada, I'm doing the adult Canskate program, which sounds similar to US basics. I anticipate finishing that in the next month (currently on waltz turns). I've also wondered how long it may take to learn certain elements, and while I understand it caries by so many different factors, it gives me an idea of what to expect, especially as it pertains to ice time, off-ice, equipment and nutrition. A couple of questions with respect to the latter: 1) I started with a cheap ($130 CDN/$100 US) pair of skates - the Jackson Rave from a big box store with a Mark II blade. While my coach feels the pair is adequate for finishing basics, I don't feel my ankle is supported at all for waltz jumps. I went to my local pro shop to get fitted for the Jackson Freestyle that comes with the Aspire XP blade. According to the Jackson charts, it's rated for our Starskate levels (similar to US freestyle I think?). It has a stiffness rating of 45. It felt super comfortable with the heat molding, the pro shop person felt it would be a good pair for me (I'm not the lightest skater and as I have bad knees [patellofemoral pain syndrome and moderate osteoarthritis], I don't see myself going further than single jumps at most. The things that I have found the most challenging to learn were 3-turns, single-foot slalom, and spins. I have a pair on hold for when they arrive, but think I've got analysis paralysis. Do you feel that the Fresstyle is a stiff enough skate for an adult working up to single jumps max, but spending most of my time skating on moves/elements/skills/edges? 2) It seems that a lot of adult skaters online are raving about the Coronation Ace blade and report it's so much better for spins and turns. Actually, it seems that so many adults really despise the Aspire XP. While it's a bit pricier than I had planned, I'd be willing to go for the Coronation Ace if it would allow me to progress better and have a more enjoyable time mastering skills. I don't aspire to compete, skate for myself, but do love a personal challenge and see myself sticking with it. Questions aside, I have a skating journal where I note down all my lessons and corrections. I supplement those by watching RU-vid videos and as refreshers - mostly yours and Coach Julia's to see if there are additional things I can pick up aside from what my coaches have taught. They have commented that I am progressing rather quickly, so thank you for making all this information available to us!

According to Jackson's literature, the Freestyle should get you through the LTS Free Skate levels. I do suggest the JW Coronation Ace for my adult skaters. However, there have been some supply chain issues lately where they may be difficult to come by! Some of my adults have gone with the MK Professional, and they really like it. So, I now suggest that blade as well. MK and JW are separate brands owned by the same parent company. Either one is a great choice. I have never use Jackson blades and have always been a John Wilson skater so I cannot compare them to each other. I'm glad that you have found my videos helpful! I'm sure that you watched my series on blades: ru-vid.com/group/PLhIvo-BmGcaU_Oz4eM2T7YCAZWDKkch4I It sounds like my figure skating planner would be helpful to you too! Hi Aimee thank you very much for the video, it is full of so much helpful information. A small suggestion, it is a little distracting to watch the video since part of your face/one of your eyes is always shadowed/covered by your hair. Maybe in the future you could pull it back or light your face from your right side? The drum sound is also very repetitive and frequent. Thank you very much again for the valuable insights!

You're welcome! Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, I only have 2 lights and can't afford more equipment right now. I do my best with what I have to work with. As far as my hair, I was covering up some blemishes on that side ;) I spend quite a lot of time preparing for these videos and editing them. This one took me 18 hours to edit over many separate sessions as I fit it in between my skater's lessons. The main thing is getting the information out there - that is my goal. I'm not always 100% happy with the way that I look. That's ok with me as long as the information is accurate. I was actually waiting for someone to comment that I misspelled Choctaw in one of the lower thirds! That annoyed me! But I didn't even notice it until AFTER it went live. Unfortunately, if I were to have fixed it and reuploaded it, I wouldn't have had the same URL for the video - so I just left it. Consider that my "fall" in this video :)
