Figuring Out The Gameplay and Structure of Black Myth Wukong

@@tanglox They not only represent north south east west, they also represent good weather. In many taoist temples in china, you will see the 4 heavenly kings mostly when you first enter the temple. They usually guard the entrance. In ancient times the farmers worshipped them to pray for good weather as well.

Do you think the player is Wukong?

@@ceasarsaran8573 No most likely not with the information that is given by the developers that this story is taken after the novel journey to the west after Wukong achieved enlightenment there is no need for us to play as him but instead i believe we will play as his spiritual descendants Sun Luzhen. In a old trailer from 4 years ago the first black myth wukong gameplay trailer we see two monkey one is the real wukong and the other a different monkey wukong would stop him from killing the enemy so I believe in this story wukong will be a guide our character to teach him the right and wrong and show him enlightenment but we still will probably play as wukong with some flashback of the actual wukong before journey to the west ended fighting the gods

Agreed on the gaming community. As for the structure of the game. I was saying Nioh or Wo Long, because the bonfire system used, and the level design seems very similar to those games. The game mechanics seem to resemble Ninja Gaiden with the transformation system being something unique to the Hack n Slash genre.

@treyrouharris8802 A game can not be a souls-like and still have souls-like mechanics. For instance, the checkpoint system is similar to the bonfire system of a souls-like or Nioh's Shine system. Besides I've mentioned many times in the comments that Game Science dubbed it a Action RPG, even in the video I said that.

@@tanglox *Action Adventure* is a long forgotten GENRE that we need to start using again. Comparing this game to every other game every chance you get isn't the way to go. We can't even say "Hack n Slash" anymore lol

@sevionus89 Action Adventure games aren't forgotten, just common place. Most Ubisoft, EA, and other various AAA single player games are classified as such (Far Cry, Assassin's Creed, Avatar, Ghost of Tsushima, etc...). When I say Souls-like I am not talking about genre for the sake of classification but in mechanics used to help illustrate the gameplay loop to the player. To me a Hack n' Slash or Beat'em Up (I tend to use them interchangeably depending on the weapon used as mechanically they are the same) would be DMC5, Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Ghostrunner, or Phantom Blade 0. After putting about 15+hrs (currently at the beginning of Chapter 4) into Black Myth: Wukong, I can confidently say it's mechanics are very similar to Nioh which is considered an Action RPG first, and a souls-like second. The only mechanic not present is punishment for dying.

There are people who have gotten to play the game early with 30mins-1 hr+ gameplays. The level design is very similar to a Team Ninja game (Nioh, Wo Long).

I've seen that happening in other gameplay of this. There calling this basically just a boss gauntlet. People who have played this have said in the first hour and a half was 10 bosses alone

I'm thinking a little shorter than that depending on how players adjust to the combat and if the transformations play a big part in boss fights. Might be a solid 18-24 hrs mixed playthrough, 14-18 hrs straight through with no side objectives.

Developers have said the game is 30 to 40 hrs

@tswj A part of me wants to cook you, but you did it too yourself when you mentioned "do research" then got the boss count wrong with "60 bosses" when it's "80+ bosses" claimed by both Game Science and various publications. Source "Insider Gaming" - According to Ignus, Black Myth: Wukong features “around 160 enemy types” and “80+ bosses”. Next time THINK before you hate comment. It's a bad look my dude. Also, two people speculating about the game's length, regardless of if it's known or not, shouldn't set you off like that. Look at howlongtobeat.com and you'll see how game times differ from what's claimed due to different playstyles.

Yes, Black Myth Wukong will be mission/level-based. Mentioned that in the video.

At launch (August 20, 2024), Black Myth Wukong will only be releasing on PS5 and PC, currently the release for Xbox Series X/S is TBD as Game Science has not created a version of the game compatable with Xbox Series S which is a requirement for releasing games on Xbox. It's unfortunate but happens from time to time with game releases.

@@tanglox yes they are having to optimize the graphics for it but it will be going to Xbox not at release but it will be there. I play on pc so I don’t have have that problem luckily lol

@abhijeetdey It's an Action RPG. However from the footage it is heavily influence by the souls-like genre (as souls-likes are essentially Action RPGs with Metroidvania checkpoints and level design).

What up Souls

In the video, there was a clip I've shown which showcases a bit of the freeroam in the levels. The level design is similar to Wo Long Fallen Dynasty or some of the more recent Action RPGs from the east. There was another clip in the video where it highlighted how you unlock spells. It's more than a boss rush, however they are stating that there will be 80+ bosses in the game. I'm more so curious about the ratio of levels to bosses, if there will be 2-3 bosses per level and the amount of environments which you will explore. Other than that, my expectations are tempered with the understanding that it will be on par with the likes of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Nioh, or Thymesia,,, as I mentioned in the video.

@@tanglox I think they need to do another live stream showing a bigger level and not just bosses. That’s what I wanna see and would probably lower the skepticism I have for the game because 160 enemies and over 80 bosses and it’s not open it’s Nioh mission base. 👀👀

To be honest, I think they've shown enough without giving everything away. Game Science has shown the core gameplay loop, along with the essential player mechanics, enemy variety and boss variety, their take on the bonfire system, acknowledged the game as being level/mission-based (similar to Wo Long, Nioh, Thymesia, etc... Personally starting to think it might be similar to Otogi). Showcased the transformation system, how you get new transformations and spells, minor enemies, looting areas, items, and a lot more. They're good. If people still don't know what the game is about before it goes gold in a few weeks, that's on them imo. There are a ton of videos out there that show off any feature you have a question about for the game, except level/mission structure and the level transition/selection screen. There are also a few interviews with Game Science founder where he explains the systems in the game.

@@tanglox Based on what I've seen so far, its combat system is no way as sophisticated as Nioh's, also no parry melee system like Wu long or Sekiro except for projectiles. Yes, the graphic is pretty nice but I actually find it's combat a bit underwhelming, Wukong moveset, special abilities, the weapon system, the bosses, the stage design etc. I will wait for proper review before I decide to buy it or not. With that being said, though. It's China's first proper action game and I reckon they have done a great job here, I welcome more devs from Korea and China joining the competition and make more good games for us.
