I can't believe how little fuel you used and the fact that you did not have to spend another night at sea makes a big difference. Both boats are essentially getting the same life experiences in your adventures around the world, but you have less to fix on your boat. And for those that don't know there are so many things that need constant maintenance. So for me it would be your boat! But more important it is the company you keep in a small space and your family is so humble and kind and caring that it would be running with you guys as a buddy boat that would make anyone the better for it!

An easy answer.Archer has the most important of equipmen,and that is the most lovely,caring un-American people who are on board.No arrogance or enormous ego just beautifull people with love in their hearts.The interactions your family has with each other is not only inspiring but beautifull to watch.ARCHER 1....... ZATARA 0. HANDS DOWN.
@bryanmyers9977
@bryanmyers9977 3 года назад
I finally get to see the other side of this. On Zaitara it was just "hey look, we came in 12 hours behind a performance boat". I perceived that there was more to it than that and wondered how much fuel they burned. I don't think this was a good comparison. This was an edge case that involved a crazy amount of motoring because your weather window's only criteria was "no cyclones". So you had to leave when there was no wind. The only time you were right next to each other under sail was when Z was literally on their very best point of sail in their very best conditions. For you it was just meh. They also had a waterline advantage when neither boat was going to exceed hull speed and when their underpowered sails could slowly get their boat up to speed because there was not enough chop to interrupt the building of that momentum. Even with all those lucky perks a boat with 13% more waterline was moving appx 11% slower.. rather than faster. In that tiny snapshot you left them behind. Imagine if you both left the Galapagos at the same time for the Marquesas. You did it in some teen days... I'll bet they would have been in the high 20 days. And... you have a reasonable option of turning around and heading back to Tahiti or even the Marquesas. You can stay in the 30-something latitudes and deal with the tail/reach/headwinds and make it back that way. Z would have a very very hard time doing that. The other variable you can't measure is how the boat's motion affected comfort. You'd win that hands down.. and I think I heard a brief comment from Keith on the radio that they weren't comfortable which might confirm it. Performance all the way. Give me a boat that allows for the most options for travel, with the least maintenance downtime and the least motoring time. To me, that's what an expedition is all about.

I am torn honestly. The maintenance of Keith's boat would certainly be a big downer for my preference. He is the kind of person that loves to sink his teeth into it though, so that is great for him. The fuel cost of his boat is also rather disconcerting to me when things are not favorable. But that is the price of comfort. I am someone who tends to slant to comfort but I also prefer simplicity and practicality. Javalo from the Crusing Kiwi's is a much smaller Privilege I think. (42' ?) And they hit every bit as much speed and smooth ride as zatara can. It is also no less comfortable in many ways either. And the smaller size doesn't seem to be much of a limiter to them. They do not have the redundant systems of Zatara or excess storage, but they have much the same fuel range and amenities over all. Their boat has just not been kitted out quite so much. And it was also a much cheaper purchase for them than either Zatara or Archer. Fuel consumption I bet would sit somewhere in between the other two. So maybe for some it would be a decent compromise.
@bryanmyers9977
@bryanmyers9977 3 года назад
@@wishusknight3009 There is a perfect boat for everyone and not everyone is suited for a performance boat. What bothers and scares me a bit is how the big cat manufacturers have evolved their designs into boats that have sacrificed seaworthiness, speed and build quality for fancy gadgets. It's like they are building condos that happen to float. Lagoons are a perfect example of this. The bottom line is to know what your boat is really capable of doing and not doing and to stay within it's capabilities. Also, along the path towards mastery there is a place where you don't even know what you don't know. I hope would-be cruisers get past this place before they head out- they need to know what they don't know and fill in those gaps. I suspect that unless a sailor has spent some time on a performance boat- maybe even crewed for a few seasons on a fast racer, they don't even know what that feels like, and how much the option of traveling even a little bit faster changes cruising life.

Hey Guys, it's interesting to read the comments about how folks would rather have the O-51 instead of the Privilege. Having seen the walkthrough that Seth did with Brent, from Multihull Central, I'd call Archer an expedition Outremer. You guys have a ton of toys on that boat! Have to agree with Seth and Doug (from another video M.C. produced) having a boat that sails exceptionally well in light airs is the best. Great vid again!

One of the reasons I encourage our kids to watch this channel is in the hope that your kids will rub off on them a little bit. When they were younger, they were much like yours and still are today to some extent. However, in mingling with other kids at school and friends, some of the shine has worn off. Hope you are able to keep your boys the fine upstanding young men that you are teaching them to be. Thanks for the comparison of a larger cat vs a smaller performance cat, that will help volumes when we move up to our next boat, cast off the lines and set a course over the horizon in pursuit of Archer and Zatara.

Lovely video! Always so fun watching. Wish I was with you out there on the ocean. ⛵ About the boats. Archer is absolutely a hundred times more beautiful than Zatara. That red color just makes it even more beautiful. And the speed is of course something that can come in handy from time to time. But.... If I sailed around the world, then my boat would be my home where I have to be for a very long time, which means that I personally would be much more comfortable having a lot of space to move around on, and a lot of place for all that extra equipment and stuff to make my life on the ocean as easy and good as possible. So I personally would 10 times out of 10 choose a bigger "Expedition" boat. No less than 55 foot, but preferebly a 60 foot boat, with a big flybridge to give even more space to be on. But that is me, and I of course respect and accept anyone with a different view of it all. There are always pros and cons with both boats no matter how much one wants to argue back and forth which is "best".😀 Much love to ya all guys! 💙

If you’re going to compare boats it makes sense to compare boats of similar size and budget like a 5X in this case. You were doing ok though on a much smaller boat even if you seem to sail pretty conservative which makes sense in your situation (makes sense anyway touring the world). Toast and Vegemite is what you need to fight off seasickness. It cures everything between dandruff and ingrown toenails.

Keith does not have an "expedition cat," he has a fat cat. We all know it, he knows it... he also has a lot of junk slowing that boat down ;)

But I do admit I am jealous of their Dive Compressor, Scuba Tank Storage, 80hp Center Console, King size beds, etc. It wasn’t my choice to have all those things (we could have), but I can still be envious. ~Seth

This is the video I've been waiting for.. Where you guys beat Zatara! Just kidding but when I saw their video I knew I wanted to hear your opinion. Both vessels are magnificent and have their strengths and weaknesses but what you said is true if you had 3 teenagers on board you might agree with Keith but Archer is perfect for you guys for now.

Appreciate the comforts of a/c and generators but the colors (Archer Red and Pu'u Honua Green), speed and quality build offered by Outremer provide an Archer edge.

It's s funny how one perceives new places "friendliest people on earth's." In my experience we encounter friendly people when we are away from home and open to the new, trusting in others goodness. I went to many places and I noticed most times friendliest people. I think we are more open. Which boat I want to be on? Hmmm Probably yours or the one where I can cook healthy veggie gourmet meals and have a tiny space to myself and actually can do some active hands on sailing.best wishes.

How did you bring politics into this?!? 😂 And by the way, while we don’t agree completely in Politics, I like how Kieth and I can talk about Politics without it being contentious. I wish more people were like that. ~S

@@TheSailingFamily you make a good point. I stopped following Zatara after Keith's jingoistic rant and here he is again. But yes, I should leave politics out of sailing discussions. 👍

kids are adorable, lmao @ Seth and Keith on the radio, i never realized how far off some of these videos are from the present, and i probably would go with Zatara who got me into watching all these sailing channels

You are a lucky man my friend. Your wife has a very nice disposition, always smiling (well for the camera anyway), and she enjoys keeping herself tone with TRX and yoga. What do you do to stay in shape? Having sailed (and raced) I know can it can be a strenuous process and can be a workout in and of itself. (Also keeping up with twin boys was always helpful to keep on the path for me), just curious if you do anything onboard to stay fit during passage. Thanks in advance.

Hi Seth is it possible to share average speeds per 24h or per trip more often instead of the speed at a particular moment?
