The dish is called LAING (La-eeng) from Taro plant (wide leaves and tall stems) with coconut milk. The dessert is called GINATAAN (Meaning cooked with coconut milk) with sweet potatoes, tapioca or sago, jackfruit,, glutinous rice made into round small balls, saba bananas and sugar.
I really appreciate you sharing this information, Victoria, and have taken a screenshot for future reference. Ginataan was such a tasty dessert, and I'd love to have it again someday.

that little restaurant we call it the philippines as TURO TURI which means POINT POINT bec. if you order a dish but you dont know the name just TURO or POINT your finger on the desired dish you want to eat.
There are so many varieties of vegetable dishes in the 🇵🇭. One of my fav is green jackfruit cooked in coconut milk and also bamboo shoots. Locals don’t eat a lot of veggies. Did you happen to try Pan de coco 💚 from the bakery? It has sweetened shredded coconut inside.
Hello Amalia 👋 We had the young jackfruit dish in Port Barton, and absolutely loved it 😋😍 I'm not sure if we actually tried pan de coco, but we definitely should have as it sounds so tasty! Thank you so much for your very helpful information 🙏🤗
those donuts look great. i had pa de coco, krinkles, etc but no filled donuts (.. the prices were super cheap in the bakeries i visited but not 3 pesos..but 5/6 pesos was all good too.i love the philippines but im in thailand now..will visiit the philippines next year for sure. also didnt really see too many rice terraces because i was always @ the beach..of course lol. next time for sure..salamat )
5 to 6 pesos is still pretty good... but that bakery was such a great find 😋🙌 Oh, I love Thailand, and will actually be going there for 3 weeks in August with my sister, and will be so ready for all of that delicious Thai food 👏 The beaches in the Philippines certainly are beautiful, and I can understand why you'd find it difficult to drag yourself away... the rice terraces are truly spectacular though and are well worth the trip 😁😊🇵🇭♥️ ~ Mandy
You both best be visiting Buscalan since you’re near. It’s two jeepney rides to get there. That’s where the 108 year old woman who tattoos with pomelo thorns lives.
Hi Kim 👋 It's so lovely to hear that you enjoyed our Thailand videos. We hope you enjoy our Philippines series as much, if not more! ♥️🇵🇭 PHILIPPINES 🇵🇭: ru-vid.com/group/PLCmNbKU5iMrm9Npya3L_hhtKCInmeN_j1
Good morning Mandy and Lee! I'm literally having morning coffee and wishing I had a krinkle to go with it! 😂. All the baked goods look wonderful! Thank you for sharing with us! Take care! 🤗🐕
Hello MyDog 👋 We're sweltering in Amritsar, trying to muster up through courage to leave our lovely aircon room to go out for dinner... what I wouldn't give to have that bakery around the corner 🤣 Krinkles are blimmin' amazing and go perfectly with a morning coffee 😋 Thank you so much for your lovely comment - it's always wonderful to hear from you xx🤗🙏
@@FrugalTravellersthe taro leaves in coconut milk is called laing. It should be spicy but majority of Filipinos do not like spicy food or we want the hot sauce on the side. Hopia that you ate is made with mung beans or mongo. Love your vlog seen it for the first time. I am retired already and has been travelling on the cheap like you do. Enjoy your trip. I will be watching more of your adventures.
That gabi dish is taro leaves cooked in coconut milk. Do not lay your utensils on top of those tables. That is just an eatery, not a regular restaurant. They have no table cloths and those tables are wiped off by dirty rags.
Thank you for sharing this information, Madel. Fortunately we didn't have any stomach issues during our 1-month travelling around the Philippines, and ate at local places all the time. We tried so much delicious food, and here is our full playlist, with more videos to come from Manila and Palawan: PHILIPPINES 🇵🇭: ru-vid.com/group/PLCmNbKU5iMrm9Npya3L_hhtKCInmeN_j1
Hahhha... in the old days I would certainly have tried everything, Cindy. It's probably fortunate that I'm reining in my natural sweet tooth and eating more fresh fruit & veg 😋🤗 ~ Mandy
Hello M&L, Looks like the Philippines is one of the cheapest country in Asia. I was gobsmacked when you mentioned the 2 pesos for them home made pasteries. Have you seen anything even cheaper than that? If so what would it be? That elderly shop owner could really speak english. Is that the case in other shops / restaurants / transports, etc ? Enjoy your weekend, mind yourselves 🙋🏻♂️
Hello SERGIO 👋 It's so lovely to hear from you, and your comments are always so thoughtful and interesting 😊 I'm trying to think of anywhere that's had less expensive pastries but nowhere comes to mind. That bakery was excellent value for money, and was definitely the least expensive we found during our month in the Philippines. The shop owner was so lovely. We had a really good chat with her about life in Banaue, and her 10 siblings! I think she learnt English at school, and it might still be taught in schools today, as so many people in the Philippines speak excellent English. There are also so many Filipino OFWs as well (Overseas Foreign Workers) and most families have 1 or more family members living and working overseas. Filipinos are just so lovely - we met so many happy & friendly people, and had some great conversations as well. Thank you again, SERGIO, and we hope you have a wonderful week 🙏🤗😍 ~ Mandy
Hi Cory. That's a great random question! We're currently in India, and the flies are pretty annoying at times. Tropical countries tend to have more bugs, but I can't say I remember ever being super plagued by any... or maybe it's just something we've become accustomed to after 30+ years travelling 🤔 Any tropical country, really, but you really do get used to them faster than you'd think. ~ Mandy
Thank you so much, ramon 🙏🤗. We had such a wonderful time in the Philippines & have many more videos to come in our Pinoy playlist. We hope you enjoy them: PHILIPPINES 🇵🇭: ru-vid.com/group/PLCmNbKU5iMrm9Npya3L_hhtKCInmeN_j1
Filipino viands (meat, seafood, vegetable dishes) tend to have stronger flavors i.e. salty because it's meant to be eaten together with rice in a single bite. The bland taste of the rice balances off the taste.
