Arnel Pineda grew up and performed with his band here in Philippines with Journey, Aerosmith, and Heart’s song. So he knows the placement already for those high notes and as you observed with similarities somehow to the original but having his own twist to it.
The good thing about Arnel is his stamina in doing concerts/shows every night is awesome his vocals and showmanship is consistent..I think James Ingram songs are popular in Filipino karaoke 😊

me, too. James I. is one of the most beloved R&B/jazz singers in the Phils, (along w/ George Benson ("greatest love of all" etc), Al Jarreau & Brian McKnight in the late 70s-early 90s). JI is certainly one of my faves. Love his "Somewhere Out There", "How do you keep the music playing" duets. Smokey Robinson supposedly said that he, David Pack & Michael McDonald is the "other trinity" (no idea who the first "trinity" is). I just love their "I Just Can't Let Go" trio.😊

Introducing us to songs and artists we're not familiar with :) Speaking for myself (Richard), I didn't listen to the radio or follow any pop or r&b or jazz music at all growing up. My wife is constantly introducing singers from the 80s and 90s that have top Billboard hits that I never heard. My time was dedicated 100% to writing my own music while listening to musical theater and hard rock/metal music. So this genre is completely foreign to me! lol

Filipinos love 80's music for the sole reason that most of the songs in that era have so much "Soul", poetry in the lyrics, and real singers. And this is how most professional, amateur, or even random somebody in the Philippines was trained. As respect to their favorite singers or songs, they like to give justice to those songs as much as possible. That's why they can sing so well with so much emotion and soul.

To us he was up there with Kenny Loggins (you DO know him, right?). Another American singer very popular here that wasn't big there was Angela Boffil. Remember her, mga kababayan?
