"I want to be having fun but I'm not" is such a relatable feeling for me with art! The past decade has felt like a struggle to ever do anything creative without feeling like it's not "good" enough or not turning out like I imagined it would (partially from bring so out of practice by not drawing often because life is busy, and then it only gets worse the less I draw, which is what happens when it makes me feel bad instead of fulfilled lol). Why can't brains just let us enjoy something without expectations, damn. 😂
Please don’t take this the wrong way because I LOVED this video but the narration was so unhinged. I mean this in the best way possible. Please do this style every week?? I love your honesty and showing us the real process. Bat Boy was awesome ❤❤

@@MiraSeville Sorry this one wasn’t for you, you are totally entitled to your opinion but for what it’s worth I didn’t interpret it that way at all. People tend to be their own worst critics and the additional anxiety would have amplified that. Plus Em clearly had a specific vision for what she wanted ahead of time and even though the drawings were super cute in their own right, they were different from that vision. I’m not sure if you switched off by then but later in the video she shows her initial plans for some of the drawings and they do look quite different.
THANK GOD dude, we artist all have these days, sometimes art doesn’t feel good or satisfying. But what we make is still valuable, even if we think it looks awful or it makes us want to rip our hair out. I think artists who are able to do this have such dedication to the craft.
The gnome is flipping off your anxiety, ocd, and need for perfection. It was brave of you to push yourself outside your comfort zone. And the art was beautiful as always!!

You are so much more then just an edited recording. Please be more gentle on yourself because you've got a whole bunch of us rooting for you. On a positive note, I just want you to know your art videos have helped me in my own art confidence. This exposure therapy really was the best example of how perfectionism can sometimes make artist eat themselves. One of the best parts about art though is it teaches us to be slow and learn. It's a process, not an event ❤

I used to draw a lot in highschool but as an adult life has killed the whimsical artist in me so i enjoy someone who has the bravery to show that sometimes you draw things you dont like and still show us. High quality isnt just about the art, i think youre a high quality person! I have tried to make cute little nothings on a scrap piece of paper and would hate it so much that id throw it away and once my coworkers saw it in the trash, picked it up and put it on a tack board. It was really sweet and i think thats how this style of video is for me so far, and comparison is the thief of joy so when you see those who "can just make quick nice sketches" they are just on a different moment on their art journey to do so and if you're wanting to be like them, as we know practice always helps :)
I loved this video and your drawings! I think you perfectly achieved the cartoony style you were going for so don't be so hard on yourself! It was very nice to listen to you, it was like drawing with a friend. You're not talking all the time with a friend so I didn't mind the pauses, it gives you time to think.

As a fellow perfectionist I have been told you learn from the bad/mistakes and it’s hard to see the good when you hate your work. And honestly the moth man you hate so much was my absolute favourite! It’s all good but I love him! And the way you layer pencil crayons I need to learn this skill. ❤❤❤

Hey Em, I wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this video. It hit a little close to home for me with the whole talk of anxiety and exposure therapy because I also suffer from anxiety and I have for a long time. My whole life basically. I've been trying to do some of my own exposure therapy stuff too lately, but unfortunately, It hasn't been going so well due to the fact that I keep chickening out. But I'm going to keep trying. Trying to push myself out of my comfort zone and to prove to myself that it's okay and everything's going to be okay. So, yeah thanks for this reminder to keep being brave, because it really is tough sometimes. (Writing more youtube comments is one of those things funnily enough lol, I used to be too scared to write anything at all, so hey, maybe I'm not doing so bad after all haha) Also, I could not stop laughing my ass off once I realized that the gnome was flipping someone off, then once the rat was added, my day was made. XD Thanks for another great video.
I'm not even halfway through watching this, but I just HAVE to stop and say that your cute little bat guy sketch reminds me so much of a derpy mothman, and nothing has filled my heart with more joy than him today. I would buy that as a sticker in a heartbeat. Edit: LMAO, as soon as I clicked play again, you said, "we're gonna ignore the terrible mothman I just drew." MOM SAID IT'S MY TURN WITH THE BRAINCELL Also, I really love this kind of video from you! It shows your authentic personality (your voiceovers do too, but you can tell that this wasn't edited quite as much [which is a good thing in this case]), and it makes me feel less alone for having to almost gaslight myself into finishing a sketchbook spread when I don't like the way it's going. It's also comforting to hear another person whose inner monologue progressively loses its chill throughout a drawing session. Regardless of how this ends up looking by the time the video is over, I've thoroughly enjoyed myself, and I really hope you do more videos like this.

If I have learned 1 thing about art. It should always be about having fun. I don't know how many times during this video that you said something about not having fun. Do something that makes you happy and is fun to create. I watch all of your videos regardless of how you do them. I loved Bat Boy, also the cute little gnome and rat saga. I don't think anyone... except you expects perfection.

I liked watching you draw in real time, I could relate to your anxiety spiral, and I think you should be proud of yourself (while knowing that that probably sounds patronizing and I don’t mean for it to… watch me go into my own anxiety spiral in the middle of this comment). I also think if you wanna cuss you should cuss because it’ll help you feel like you’re speaking normally and less guarded. I love your artwork! Keep it up!

I love this video and the lenght it, the more you just ramble the more fun it is listen and watch tbh, those lil spooky dudes you drew are literally my all time fave, OMG THAT RAT😍, they have so much character, you are too hard on yourself and i never want to tell an artist how to feel about their own art, but still these are so cool and fun and i just got kinda sad when you were talking about how bad they are or whatever, but i get that the pressure you put on yourself makes you be more tense and it’s much harder to consentrate, i get it 100% anyways my essay is over now, i loved it and i will be back when you post again😍😍😍😍
This video is like a sketch but for videos, as artists sketches aren't always perfect and we don't always want to show them to people but it's the best way to get better and usually people are amazed by almost any art. I love this video because it's much more relatable than other sketch book videos with voice overs. I love your honesty at 19:00 and I wanted to commend you for turning the camera back on and posting this video! Also totally relate to you aspiring to have those effortless fast sketches, how do they do it?!?!
OK… The gnome took me on an emotional journey. First, I don’t like gnomes, I think they’re creepy. But then yours was coming out so cute, I thought, “Maybe I’m being too hard on gnomes.” And then I thought, “Wait, is he flipping someone off???” My negative perception of gnomes was restored. Then I noticed he’s also smiling. So… Anyway, love the sketches. I could never go straight in with ink, you are so brave! Love your channel.
I love how this turned out. The sketch book is supposed to be your research and development department. I always have 4 or 5 pages in a book that I go back and glue cards/magazine clippings to cover up my experiments that went wrong. Only reason for that is so that I enjoy looking through the book years down the road. I like that you said there were good things to come from it in the end. 🖖🖖🖖🖖
My anxiety also manifests with perfectionism. I love drawing and am comfortable drawing in public but the idea of drawing for a video is terrifying to me. You are amazing!!!!!!
Wonderful and very honest video! I think the main problem you might have had is the fact that you did those little sketches before the video, so instead of just doodeling away you tried to recreate what you had already done from memory, but better and in straight ink. That would be pretty stressful for anyone, really! I look foreward to seeing what you come up with for a more relaxed kind of video that's actually fun for you!

Have you checked out Grotesquerie? It’s far more graphic than Evil, but so far it’s interesting……seems like a tv version of like 7 mixed with religion, it’s not bad so far. I’ve really enjoyed Evil as well and I agree and have had it with those in charge cancelling everything good in order to give us more reality shit shows. Honestly, theres’ enough out there….no need to put out more of the same. Also, love your illustration style. I’m a realism girlie and I’m trying to do illustration for inktober…..it’s going ok, but not getting nearly enough engagement on my posts….I’m too old to put all the flashy flashy stuff I guess, lol.
I am watching it now actually, I agree it's not bad I'm waiting to see what happens haha but I'll watch anything with Niecy Nash in it😁 don't worry about getting less engagement when you are doing a different style/ subject than usual, it makes it weird for a bit. I tried watching your video but you constantly complain about everything you do and the cussing isn't necessary. Not sure if you're wanting people to say, " no it's great. You're awesome", or what, but I want to learn from artists that are positive. Who cares if it's perfect. If it's so stressful then turn off the camera. What's the point if you don't enjoy it? The put downs and complaints are just too much!!!! Art is supposed to be fun. Quit begging for compliments. I must respectfully, disagree with your opinion. It is an extremely difficult thing to have to live with anxiety and it is also an extremely difficult thing to try to explain what the experience is like to those who do not experience it. It is extremely painful and heavy to bear. The emotions are very overwhelming and it is a lot because for someone with anxiety and/or ocd, their biggest enemy is themselves and their own inner monologue and compulsions plus the emotions that come with it and the barrage of thoughts that overwhelm the mind. To people on the outside, it just looks like we are being normal because we aren't acting hysterical or however else they may expect a person with anxiety to act, but in reality it is such a difficult and painful internal struggle that we have to deal with on the daily. All of this to say is that while I may not know her personally, I can guarantee she is not fishing for compliments, and as for what the point is, she said it herself at the beginning of the video, it's an uncomfortable experience for exposure therapy to help combat the emotions that emerge from anxiety. Also, I have to say, I like the swearing. I like to hear the vents and the complaining. I like her attitude. A lot of people do, because it is relatable and there are a lot of people who feel similarly out there finding some solace in finding an artist who is similar to them and who they like to watch. She is being her most authentic self, and in a world where everything is fake and or sensationalized and sterilized for views and clicks and perfection, I think that is a very rare and very beautiful thing. So, yes. I must respectfully disagree with your opinion, and I think I have made myself clear as to why; just wanted to write this because I think it's important to say. I also want to add that I did not write this out of anger or hatred or anything to you, random youtube commenter, and I hope you have a nice day. Truly.
