Hey Mark, those mackerel backbones would have been delicious if you fried them up as well. They turn out to be fish flavored chips! And it works in the air fryer or oven too because the bones are oily enough to fry themselves with just heat!
Tip for cleaning and fileting fish. Ask for the ones buried in the ice if you're not too far from home. Or stick them in your freezer for 20-30 min. It keeps the guts together and the meat isn't as soft when you filet. By the time you finish cleaning the fish will be thawed and ready to cook.
I just started fishing and have been catching a ton of mackerel. Gonna try some of these out, they’re not bad fish if you bleed and ice them right away. If they’re from the market, cut the bloodline out for better flavor too. I give my cat pieces too lol
You definitely have an affinity for some stronger tasting fish. Not my cup of tea but I definitely respect it. If there was a way to ship fish that wasn't ridiculously expensive, I would send you some GOOD stuff. It's incredible how much of a difference there is between "fresh" and FRESH.
Not everyone enjoys bland tasting fish… in fact, in many countries the people prefer the more fishy tasting fish like mackerel. My wife is from the Philippines and she would rather eat a “junk” fish like mackerel than a mild or bland tasting expensive fish. They love the strong flavor of oily fish and personally I do too!!! It’s also higher in good Omegas so it’s more healthy for you. I’m Japanese and we eat some mackerel raw in sushi and sashimi. It’s one of my favorites!!! Many Americans aren’t fish lovers so they mask the flavor of the fish by putting sauces on them. So please don’t put down others who like to eat “junk” fish because around the world you’re seriously outnumbered…
@@danielsuzuki2678Yeah in poland we eat carp for christmas, i find it a delicious fish. But americans think its dirty and wont even eat it meanwhile eating indoor farmed chicken and pigs which are brought up in such filth its crazy haha
@@aragon2552 Great point!!! Chickens and pigs are normally raised in unhealthy conditions and we eat them anyways. Yet carp and other fish are considered nasty??? When I was stationed in Nebraska (USAF), I went to a restaurant that specialized in catfish and carp. My wife and I were blown away on how delicious the carp tasted. The fish tasted sweet and had a delicious mild flavor. Honestly, you couldn’t find a better tasting fish!!! I understand in Poland you serve the carp with dumplings and mushroom soup, Yum 😋
love Mackerel - I've eaten it my entire life - it's even my favorite sushi - if it smells - you aren't getting it at the right place - it should smell like the sea and the eyes should be clear
This is probably my favorite fish to eat. You should do a video on milk fish. They're super fatty white meat salt water fish that are way cheaper than even tilapia, but are more flavorful than cod or tilapia. They're very boney, but probably the tastiest cheap fish. I imagine they're really good for you as they're such a fatty protein.
I am heading out to catch some Atlantic mackerel after work. We normally smoke them or use them as cut bait for stripe bass, I need to try that chili now.
Went down to Tenby in Wales and we bought a few mackerel fillets. I cooked them on the charcoal grill and the taste was better than any restaurant I've ever been to. And I've had grilled fish in Greece.
I learned a great way to cook these Mark. Aluminum foil....mackerel inside....put lots of mayo and sliced lemons in....wrap.....grill. The mayo pulls the fishyness out and you get a beautiful meal. Same with bluefish. 🙏
Im have to try the sauce look goods. I actually eat mackeral allot. I get it from fishing it from the ocean on my kayak. I just clean it and soak it in ice cold water with salt for like 5 mins and then grill it wth sea salt and eat it with soy sauce and rice. Yum yum in my tum tum
I love atlantic mackerel! One of my fondest memories was buying the smoked mackerel from St. johns NB to eat aboard the ferry across the bay of Fundy to nova scotia. A fish lovers paradise
Very awesome!!! Only thing you forgot to do but not really needed unless you sashimi it is to remove that rubbery transparent over skin. Makes a big difference in the crispiness of the skin when broiling/grilling too.
Great video my brother… absolutely love mackerel!!! Saba wa totemo oiishi des ne? Funny when you were shopping for the ingredients, you picked up Japanese Natto instead of the Braised Chili Shrimp Sauce??? Natto (fermented soy beans), shoyu and hot mustard is great on a hot bowl of rice. Man, I’m crazy about natto… just had it with a raw egg for breakfast, oiishi desho?
I love atlantic mackerel, strong taste but goes well with broiled or fried. I love eating it with some onions and tomatoes on the side. A spicy fish stew with mackerel is also nice
I love eating mackeral! Either broiled (saba shioyaki at a Japanese restaurant) or eaten raw (saba sushi) I like the taste and the omega-3 fatty acids are good for you too. Thanks for your video, now I’m hungry for some mackeral.
That looks Sooooo Good. Fresh Mackerel is my favorite fish. Grilled it is every bit as flavorful as a T-bone steak. The canned stuff is a bit much. I will have to search the fish markets here for some.
I used to hate mackerel, smell and taste. But one day there was such a steep discount on fresh mackerel i couldnt pass. If you lightly marinade it in salt and sake, it helps with the strong smell and taste. Just grilling with salt and pepper and it is by far the best ive ever had compared to restaurants.
I love your vids bro. I live in northwest Georgia and I battered and fried shad I caught in my cast net and the whole fish was edible after removing guts and scales.
