Filling small hairline crack in wall 

Well, I tried and can tell you that it works for a couple days\weeks than the cracks are back in the "great" Sallys' product and you are back to square 1!

For a crack that size, I'd go with a mesh tape and joint compound or it will reappear. Even caulking would a better option since it's more flexible than speckling.

never try and fill a crack above a door without using scrim, even then itll come back eventually

It probably keeps cracking because some @$$ clown builder put a drywall seem above a door. That's bad building in my opinion. You could try cutting out the drywall tape and taping it deeper but a crack in a place like that, above a door, will probably reoccur at some point.

So no need to tape it?
