Film and Photographic Glimpses of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald - The Doomed Golden Couple

Who didn't read F Scott Fitzgerald's 'A Diamond as Big as the Ritz' or 'The Great Gatsby' at university?!
Not necessarily for any Eng. Lit. course but for the sheer Jazz Age excess expressed in the stories. And of course for the delicious writing - like creme brulee.
Curiously though, and when I think back, I had no strong mental image of either the writer or his wife. So I started to look at what photographs there were around and was stunned to find so much film footage of them existed!
So I’ve gathered up what I could find:
[1] Zelda as a young woman and walking about rather saucily and hip-swinging in a garden.
[2] Zelda a little older and playing gaily about in a street.
[3] The couple with daughter Frances and in a garden.
[4] On the Riviera in 1924.
[5] And in a cafe.
[6] Finally, F Scott Fitzgerald working on 'The Great Gatsby'.
Happily, my visual memory bank of the gilded couple is now full to overflowing!
Enjoy!

Thanks for creating a look at the happier moments of Scott and Zelda's tragic lives. Just as they are the quintessential Jazz Age couple, the Charleston is the quintessential song and dance. A perfect pairing.

We can read about them. Read their works; she sold some writing too, I believe. We can even see photos and film footage. But, we can’t know the thrill of riding with them drunk, down some Manhattan avenue. It was such a different time, when novels were exciting,

I think Zelda had the kind of looks that really don’t carry in a photograph or on film. According to many she alternated between being mesmerizing and rather plain.

Scott actually is turning out to be the one writer of that era who will last, ( I am not a fan of Hemingway) and his life, which most deemed a failure at the time , in retrospect seems kind of heroic. He never deserted his duties as a husband and father, laboring on despite alcoholism and rejection to support Zelda and Scottie.

i know what you are saying...Zelda was not a raving beauty physically, it was her lively, captivating personality during the roaring 20's that made her so appealing to Scott....she simply had IT. she did photograph as psysically plain, but was capable of capturing a beautiful, talented man....oh my!

She was very skinny at 18 and had this fragile look, that was so appreciated in and iconic for her time. She was still slim after giving birth but her face had lost its delicate appeal. This must have happened to many 20s women who couldn`t keep the boyish body after giving birth. Youth back then was short.

It is incredible how little has been captured or written about one of the greatest authors in our times. It is almost as if great effort was put into not profiling F Scott Fitzgerald. I could see this as an act of revenge by the power house in control of arts and entertainment...the sensitive people who prey on the talents of others and assassinate character or life itself on a whim. They ... were presented in The Beautiful and the Damned...those people ... who steal for a living and when cheap change isn’t enough, they destroy and cash in on memorabilia. The Grim Reapers

The clips are slightly inaccurately described. The one of FSF at the table writing is from 1922 or so. He is NOT writing "The Great Gatsby." He has written something like "Many people are concerned about the flapper, but I think there is nothing to worry about." This was determined by photographic enhancements. The partial clip (original is longer) of FSF and Zelda on the Riviera is from 1925 or 1926. We know because Mizener has dated a photo of FSF with this same white sweater with stripes, a French "tricot marin," from 1926.

If he wrote The Great Gatsby in a suit and tie....very appropriate. As I understand it it was voted the second greatest novel of the 20th Century. The highest rated book by Hemingway, who overshadowed Fitzgerald his entire life, came in in the 30s. At least as far as these ratings are to be trusted.

I refused to see the recent movie of Gatsby. I hated Moulin Rouge and I could not bear to watch a Baz Luhrman treatment of such a subtle and delicate story. I guessed there would be too much emphasis on the excesses of the Jazz Age. What more recent couple could be described as 'golden'? Taylor and Burton come to mind. Who else?

@@JohnRaymondHall -- I said "THIS" music! This shrill, frantic "Jazz Age" silliness might've been suitable for a photo montage of Scott's drinking or Zelda dancing...but these family scenes could've used something a little more...ahem...SOBER? Fun film. F Scott Fitzgerald always strikes me as a bit creepy, as do many of the odd men who walk around Princeton to this day. There is something weirdly artificial about them to this California hippie's earthy soul. This is not to criticize or put him down in any way. I think he would agree with my assessment. He would probably consider me somewhat too raw and unworldly. To me he is Dick Diver incarnate and since I adore the fictional Nicole Diver, I bear some resentment toward Dick/F Scott. I am fascinated by his life even though it does strike me strangely.
