I will tell you a story and I'll tell you right away that a happy ending is unlikely. I doubt there will ever be an ending. The story is about how a huge scam can be done in Poland. |When one works on press articles, books and films about various scandals - such as, most recently, the Amber Gold scandal, one could conclude that these scandals would not have happened, had the state properly supervised financial markets via their supervision and prosecution authorities. Powerful authorities such as the KNF, the intelligence services, prosecutors and courts would crush each fraudster. Even if the fraud was not nibbed in the bud, they would finally get to the scammers, they would try to get the money back and impose penalties. Impunity would not have been an option.
The GetBack candal - which is what this story is about - has been all but forgotten despite the losses incurred estimated at PLN 3 billion. Nearly 10.000 investors have been scammed.
What did GetBack do? The company used to buy debt portfolios at an inflated price - a fact widely known in the financial market. For a while, it suited everyone. The only thing that mattered was the bank’s profit and the bankers’ commission. Greed prevailed.
People say that about some bankers, officials or politicians that they are big shots, they are just too strong. Are these big shots really untouchable? This is the question I am asking myself as get more and more involved in the GetBack scandal. This is how it looks like for now.
In this great scam, private interests mixed with the state system. Moreover - private interests prevailed and well-being of ordinary people receded into the background.
The people I'm going to talk about only want power and money. Maybe some just want the power as they are rich enough They destroy the foundations of economic freedom, faith in the state and democracy. They are worse and more dangerous than the mafia.
