Film Noir Styled Portraits | LIVE with Gavin Hoey

If you’re looking for a simple portrait concept that has layers of depth then the golden era of film noir is for you. On the surface it might appear to be just high contrast, black and white photography but add in a little bit of planning, appropriate styling, some careful lighting and film noir style images can be very dramatic.
In this live photo session, Gavin Hoey will take you through some simple photo ideas that are loosely styled on the classic film noir concepts of low key lighting and a lone, dark character. Using his small home studio as the location there’s also a high chance that smoke will be involved too!
Join us live to watch how the photo shoot unfolds and get your questions answered by Gavin during the session.

Imagine a world full of Gavin's, wouldn't that be a pleasure to live in. This man deserves so many respect because he likes to teach others to look at the good things or to get creative. Add then a lot of models like Sophie and Chloe and the world will be a much more beautiful place. Thank you Gavin and the team to light up the world with fun, strobes and reflectors.

Sophie is such an excellent model. Her body positioning and facial expressions are so good. She gives off the perfect mood that's appropriate for the setting. As someone who's photographed many people over the years, I really appreciate Sophie's talent. And with Gavin Hoey, who, in my opinion, is photography royalty and the absolute best on RU-vid, this pairing is something really special!

I've watched you create "room" scenes so many times in small spaces, and it's always impressive how well you make it work. Sophie is always impressive! (and I don't just mean "She's beautiful." I mean she always assumes poses that work, looking in the right direction, etc.. Excellent.) Take care!

When Sofie gets to the table one of the first thoughts that came to mind was Damian Lovegrove lighting, as he uses thee evolve 200 Honestly, I never see you create that kind of lighting technique in your Noir: I haven't seen all your tutorials, but I've seen a lot of them when Sofie gets to the table that lighting felt somewhat Boudoir, then the cinematic feel changed to an even puncher lighting technique a even more Lovegrove style as the deck of cards began to fly or be flipped: that is very versatile and skillful in my opinion that's how I see it - two thumbs up

It took me almost a week to watch this video.... I had to do my normal chores. Now I know how to use the A,B,C,D settings on my strobes now. And I have learned from you on how to use backlights to light a certain areas, using snoot adapter, and a strobe light with just a reflector. I am glad that a professional photographer like you is using a hand-held incident flash meter. A viewer from a mentorship member section of Facebook questioned me of why I would be using a hand-held light meter on this day and age. It seemed too old fashioned to him, I guess. I have a smoke machine that I got for free. I will try to use that in my photos for certain moods....like the room is on fire, because the model is too hot....like your model! I like the way you teach, and your mood is so attention-getting.

it is a real skill to create the style of Noir as you gain more and more experience. the lighting really is the pro lighting, but the hair style and clothing is so important I feel - I said to myself as Sofie stood next to the curtain with the cigar i would love to have that style Sofie created at the ford Museum in front of this historic cars something after all the tutorials i watched of her and she never speaks i got a feel of her personality she is very skilled I feel her noir felt like a 1940's and 1950's noir

You're right about doing self portraits. Your model is always available and on time - :-) - and you can learn a lot without wasting shoot time. If they don't turn out, delete them! Film Noir is usually thought of as 1940s, not '50s, though it'd work OK then too. The "Casablanca" look. And, I really like black and white. * Darker background. The brighter background is distracting and draws attention away from the subject. * "Ungood"? I don't think that's a word, but it works, I guess.

Dear Gavin, I have a question: you used the beauty dust to simulate a luminaire and used the small strip box to really light up. Shouldn't the model's face be dark? because the light is too low. Unless there is another source of higher light in the matter.
