I like to open the shadows on fp4 a bit. So I shoot it at 100 or 80 and develop for 125 but cut development time 10-15% that the phone app will compute for you. That opens the shadows but since highlights take longer to develop, cutting development time pulls down the highlights only giving you detail there to work with. Doing this, you have more detail in the shadows and can adjust themn them down in post with no image deterioration that you get trying to recover them. Although I am in sunny Florida, there are plenty of cloudy days with changing exposure. For those, my tlr remains at home and my f6, f100, f5 with super accurate matrix metering, auto focus and auto film advance get rolled out. Now I like to shoot my 645 for not just resolution but also tonal transitions. But the new topaz gigapixel ai has really allowed me larger prints from smaller negatives. I can easily print a 16x20 off a 35 mm. So for me, the camera/film selected for a shoot depends on the goal and conditions as well.

Well, I am back since I really like the grain and detail of this film in 67. However, it handicaps me with max shutter speed of 1/400 and widest apertures of f/3.5, 3.8 and 4.5. I like to shoot that format at f/5.6, 8 and 11 so for me the sweet spot for iso is 200. I will try a roll at the hc110 recommend 12 minutes for iso 200. If the shadows are blocked up, will consider developing at 400... that is in the massive development chart ap. That should open the shadows but I will evaluate increasing or decreasing development time to ensure detail in the highlights. As for metering in changing light, a sekonic 308 lives in my L pants or vest hip pocket in the field. I take an initial reading but leave it on ( I use rechargeable batteries so no problem)and just before taking the shot, pull it out and it can be easily manipulated with the L hand, take the reading, put it in the pocket and shoot. Wearing it on a lanyard if you have clouds coming and going, you could just drop it and fire. It's smaller than a cell phone. I like the 308x because it allows setting aperture and giving shutter speed.

you repeat a lot of times the word “risk” with a smile on your face. that is what digital photographers rarely understand. :) thanks for sharing your process. I’m starting fp4 after 40 rolls of hp5. Watching you, i can be a bit more sure that fp4 is not that “unforgiven” than people usually say.
@BelindaJiao
@BelindaJiao 2 года назад
hiya yes risk taking is such a huge part of the analogue process :) and it is something to be enjoyed! Tbh despite shooting in really harsh lighting situations I've never got to a point where the negative gets blocked - I wouldn't necessarily describe it with 'unforgiving' but it just gives more contrast

I am at the final moments of choosing a go-to stock for me and FP4 seems to be the leader - it also has a very accesible price here in germany and scanning it at my plustek is a bliss

Belida - I haven't processed film in years but seeing you do it made me nostalgic. The excitement of the "reveal" when you inspect the results of the process is palatable. That being said, processing with a 1:1 dilution will always produce a finer quality result especially when pushing the film. Another process adjustment would be a water bath process. It is known that at the start of processing, shadow detail progress at a quicker rate than during an extended development period, so initiating development two or three times will preserve shadow detail and the extended processing time will increase contrast. Ansel Adams wrote about this as did Edward Weston.
@BelindaJiao
@BelindaJiao 2 года назад
hey thanks for dropping these tips. Indeed I've gone with the 1:1 dilution since - it has become my default. Yes I read about this in Ansel's book - probably worth looking into when I could handle a more complex workflow!

Very much enjoyed your video. Very much enjoyed your approach and that you are reflecting upon not just the technical qualities of your work but the approach to your subject. While traveling in a foreign country and making a film, I always go and meet the people and hang out with them for a day before even taking out my camera. I do this for both film and photography. On a more technical aspect… I am only doing black-and-white film anymore. Yesterday I shot kodak tmx 100 at 3200, developed at 75°F for 30 minutes. Highlights blown out, but shadow detail contrasty! Then shot same film at 25 ASA, processed for 6 instead of normal 8. Great negatives for high contrast sunny day. I do recommend you try various developers. My choice right now is Ilford ID-11.

hey thank you! always a joy to be talking about creating and concepts. 30 mins does sound quite unconventional - massive push, that! I do have some ID-11 sat in the cupboard, due for a test i suppose.

I was so weirdly happy to see you tried my recommendation of taking the spool apart before unrolling the film. :-D Glad it worked for you! I have used FP4 but never experimented with it. I tried pulling Fomapan 200 (cheaper!), and I was surprised at the results although development duration was more or less a guess (6mins instead of 8,5mins roughly as by a vaguely recommended percentage I read about online). I love the look of pulled film when I can be bothered and conditions allow it (lots of light). I suspect that if temperature and everything else is followed closely as recommended, development duration has a lot of latitude after the first few minutes. But my experience from experimentation is very limited. It can be a rabbit hole!
@BelindaJiao
@BelindaJiao 2 года назад
hey yes I do take inspiration from the comments and adopt anything that is constructive! Thank you again for the tip :) This is so relatable - with film and especially the developing, the experimentation is endless. There are just infinitely many things you can do differently! That is perhaps what makes the process so much fun :)

These look great, love FP4. If it was me, I would interpret the data sheet with a pinch of salt too and guess EI 250 was a 16-17minutes. Photography is a bit of luck and a bit of artistry built on top of science.

I’ve got a roll of HP4 400 in my Minolta 500si, never used either before and it will only be my second roll of film in an SLR, wish me luck as my first roll that I shot in one of my Pentax cameras came out blank. I think I’ve mentioned it before. 🤣

dont worry too much about temperature, from my experience it doesnt need to be spot on really. I like FP4 too, i use it for 35mm , but for my TLR, Fomapan 100 is the one i always use. Regards from Austria. By the way try to learn darkroom printing, alot more fun then just scaning, easy too.

When I encounter a scene that's in shadow, I overexpose the given shot by 1-2 stops via exposure compensation dial or adjust the aperture (open up 1-2 more stops), this does not affect the whole film roll's ISO setting. Regardless, it's nice to see you learning about exposure and development by way of trial and experimentation. Nice work!
@BelindaJiao
@BelindaJiao 2 года назад
hey John thank you! :) I wish I could open it up some more, though old cameras typically are quite limiting in terms of stopping down :/ yes these experiments are great learning experiences
@john_murch
@john_murch 2 года назад
@@BelindaJiao Hi Belinda. Opening up not stopping down. Example: You are shooting a scene in good light at say, ISO 200, F11, 1/500 S/S. Then you compose for a subject that's in shadow. you can 1) Open up your aperture 2 stops to F5.6 or 2) Lower your S/S to 1/125. This way you gain 2 stops of light for a given shot. F11 to F5.6 = opening up 2 stops. F5.6 to F11 = stopping down 2 stops.

Medium format camera are not ideal for difficult light situations. Better use your 35 mm camera because the light meters of the advanced electronic 90s cameras are way better.
