I may not be a mortician, Loyal Theorists, but I can declare that the DC Universe is DEAD. At least the iteration with Man of Steel, Batman vs Superman, Aquaman, and the rest of the Justice League. DC has been struggling to make its movie franchise work for years, but I finally found a way to fix it! And I’ll even share my reaction to James Gunn’s new DC slate of Gods and Monsters. You’ll have to watch to see if I think it will FAIL or succeed...

The animated series were very pivotal for me becoming a fan of superhero adaptations. In general, the animated content was a treasure, it just went so far over the heads of Hollywood back then it seemed like they really didn't get it. The talent for writing good stories was there instead they just gave animation the brush off entirely thinking it was just for kids, but the older fans who were watching the cartoons at the time just knew that their medium being mostly ignored in the live-action films was a big mistake.
@lucasnogueira9215
@lucasnogueira9215 Год назад
@@rondorock2563 absolutely 🙌🙌, the Story telling in those early animated shows was elite. Justice league was able to tell stories about obscure characters and made it feel natural. Those shows are the reason I love super heroes. Without them I don’t think I’d be as big of fan as I am.

As much as I love cartoons, I think it was more about how DC literally used this successful blueprint, but didn't apply it to live action, thinking it worked differently. I bet people in Warner just doesn't respect those handling the cartoons to listen to their advice.

@@undeadtrooper13 So that's why he was/is still in season 3? As fan of books I didn't even finished second season so if he really cared he would left franchise long time ago or didn't even played, I wasn't even big fan of season 1 also (mostly because of changes). Also for season 1 he got 800k$ per episode, for S2 he got even more 1m$ per episode which is more than GoT cast was earning and the end of series. So we can easily imagine for season 3 he earned even more. So there is possibility during negotiations for season 4 he wanted so much money Netflix didn't/couldn't pay (I don't judge him for wanting more) and Liam Hemsworth is much much cheaper actor. So during (or before) season 4 "negotiations" very likely Amazon contacted Henry and offered him much better deal (lead actor + producer) and Amazon can literally afford any price. Additionally as producer he has more control under production (casting etc) so taking this deal was no brainer + he was warhammer fan longer than witcher. And in the end contracts can't be done that fast aspecialy for "actor + producer", so Henry and Amazon definitely were talking months in advance before he officially left The Witcher.

@@nieznajomy4398 Cavill would have happily done 7 seasons of the show, but the writers went so far off track with season 2, and I can only imagine how bad it'll be with season 3. Cavill was dedicated to doing the witcher justice in a proper tv adaptation, the writers wouldn't have it and Cavill repeatedly tried to have things changed through out season 2, roach died and the writers were gonna try to make it funny in some way, but Cavill fought for it to be changed to something a bit more somber which is what we got. Cavill would've been happy to take a pay cut as long as the writers stuck to the books, but they didn't, so Cavill is out now, and hopefully his warhammer project goes well while the witcher series crashes and burns for losing it's star because they couldn't stick to an already established story.

Those cartoons were so great! The contrast between Superman/Metropolis and Batman/Gotham was incredible. They also made me think that Metropolis was West Coast while Gotham was East with Central City hiding around Kansas City. It kept those main heavy hitters apart and probably confused a large audience when the DCEU had Gotham and Metropolis literally within sight of each other. AND THEN somehow Superman never ventured into Gotham even though his powers make him a global persona and Batman would already have figured out Sup's identity. B vs S was rough but I grew to like the Snyder cut. Hopefully when Darkseid shows his rebooted face he looks more menacing than the gray grampa look.

One question though: is it okay to rewrite a character's origin if it feels off? What if a character is beloved to you, but you feel that the story is terrible? That's how I feel I would write obscure characters: the character is great, the potential is there, but the story is either outdated or doesn't ring true to the character's core values and personality, so it's best to either axe them completely or rewrite their story in a way that makes sense and lives up to the themes of the character. Why not?

From what I heard, that's what happened to Percy Jackson - the movies were almost completely different from the books (the characters were in their late teens instead of 12, which made kids who were the main audience for the books uninterested and the teens weren't interested since it was based on a kid's book). To some extent, Harry Potter too, there were so many details and little subplots in the books that weren't in the movie, and the movies completely wrecked Ron

Yeah... but... why did he feel the need to claim that James Gunn was following his plan? Half of those were really shoehorned -- Point #1 in which even he admitted that the 10 movies included lots of smaller, obscure characters and it's _starting with_ Gods and Monsters, and Point #4 in which all of these movies have been announced up front isn't really "taking his time" -- and James Gunn clearly didn't follow Point #5 but got no "red X" on the list for that instead of the "Green check" he gave every other item. I also enjoyed the fact that he kept evaluating each point, but I wish he'd done it with less bias. But I think he wanted to be able to say "I told you so" from the future -- that's hard to say if James Gunn only partly follows the list, neither embracing it or nor rejecting it.

ive never understood why these cinematic universe are so difficult to keep in line, like if a character has a completely different tone simply dont put them in, all it takes is a handy little nod or reference just to show theyre stories are happening concurrently then when the time is right pull them all together, its all you really have to do, early marvel did it and it worked perfectly, the one exception i have to this is the young justice, they somehow managed to effortlessly build the whole dc universe together so seamlessly, almost every character you see is a comic book accurate character and they never really feel shoehorned in, its as if youre actually in that world, characters arent just coming out of the woodworks like the newer marvel is kind of doing( so many of marvels new stories just make me sit there and think "where were u during endgame, couldve used your help mate") they even went the direction of things like the superhero trafficking storyline which just further solidified that this is just a world of superhumans

Speaking as someone who loves to write, this is honestly really good advice you're giving out. I know a great many people might think it SOUNDS dumb to not have a plan (if the fan reception to the New Star Wars Trilogy is any indication), but, honestly, not having a plan doesn't restrict you creatively; I do still stress the importance of good note-taking, but basically just don't overthink how your story is gonna go: it frees up room to do what you want, when you want, how you want, where you want, why you want with your characters and the world they're in. I'm not a professional writer, though, so take my advice with a grain of salt. ;)
@Saphia_
@Saphia_ Год назад
I find that that's true with so many creative professions. In everything that has editing in its process like stories and design, for example, it's so important to know the basic outline of what will happen but one, figure out the details as we go and two, never be afraid to try something new.
@steelhert4363

Now that is an advice I wish I had. I've been working on a new book for a while now, and in my mind I had completely mapped out the story despite knowing that I tend to bring good ideas when I go with the flow. But this video and your comment reminded me that I don't need to map out my world that extensively. Thank you for that.
@doro626
@doro626 Год назад
I have always been a fan of the story bible. That way you have liberty to be creative, but you dont go against characters basic personalities. i will also say, when it comes to a franchise as large as Star Wars, I am very surprised that they didnt have it all planned out to the decimal point. I guess some people thought the property was too big to fail.
@bluestreaker9242
@bluestreaker9242 Год назад
@@doro626 Yeah, that's a solid suggestion, yeah. A lot of famed authors swear by the story bible. I recall reading somewhere that gave this gem of advice: "planning out the story bible should not be more important than simply writing the story". Basically what I've been saying: don't overthink things, just roll with it. Keep things consistent, absolutely, but don't overthink things. You don't want to back yourself in to a creative corner and give up on the project because keeping the momentum going is too daunting a task. :/ Funny that, Star Wars was plagued with problems since the beginning; it's amazing this single film got a franchise, and even got off the ground, on account of how much went wrong even before filming started. For instance, George Lucas was very much an idea man, but he wasn't much of a writer, so he got the help of a ghostwriter to weave his ideas together: Alan Dean Foster. Fun fact, in an interview, he was asked if he ever felt bitter about George Lucas taking all the credit, to which he responded "not at all": I won't lie, I respect that, as I feel most people would be.
@sihly_me9386

I'm glad that this is the advice that Mat mentions when it comes to mapping out a story larger than a single movie, book or whatever because I'm currently going through this "note-taking", "go with the flow", "not restricting creativity" process with my OCs. I have them in my head, I know I'd like them to crossover in some way (I have a very heavily influenced superhero comic book crossover type universe, like Marvel), I have the basics for the universe they live in, but stuff like they're origin stories, character arcs, how exactly they'll crossover, or what type of media I'll introduce them in is up in the air but still being thought of in the back of my head, and I can come up with may different iterations of each of those aspects I've mentioned and go with it. Since, I've had these characters and this universe for over 2 years now, I've gotten used to feeling free to change characters names, which is really something I'd usually not be comfortable with (also a good 99% of my OCs don't have names, so as I develop them more I'll be to narrow down a name that actually makes sense for each of them).

The whole "liking the source material" angle is why I was initially suspicious of Star Trek (2009), and my fears proved true. A few days before the movie came out, I saw an interview where J.J. Just hearing that one of the series ideas is titled Waller has me excited. Amanda Waller is constantly seen as an antagonist to overcome in the Suicide Squad films (both live action and animated), but the drawback is that her character isn't fleshed out in favor of whoever is on the team this time. As the only character guaranteed to be present in the franchise every time, I like the idea that she can finally be the focus, maybe with a rotating cast of villains under her command. Also gives DC a chance to float villains to the audience and see who might be worth a film down the line.

DC has ALWAYS been different for one reason (well several reasons but those aren't important), the shows/comics/movies/animation are about these Super-Beings fighting on behalf of Humans and living/hiding among them in plain sight. DCAU was fantastic for its storytelling to give these epic heroes heck even small-time heroes that some of us never heard of (or much care for) something memorable. The CW Kids' WBs (in its prime) even created shows like Legion of Super-Heroes in 2006 (which sadly ended in 2008), The Batman(2004-2008) and THE MOST BELOVED OG Teen Titans(2003-2006)

What??? As explained in the video, Man of Steel is about Superman wrestling with morality. That's not a Superman story. In the comics and the other movies, it's merely a given that Superman represents all that is morally good, as contrasted appropriately with Batman who is morally ambiguous. That's why we see him do things like take revenge on a jerk by ruining his truck with telephone poles. You are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT about how film directors should respect the source material that they want to adapt into movies. For example, the first Super Mario Bros. movie was bad because they didn't respect the source material of the actual game that it was suppose to be based on. Now the Super Mario Bros. movie (which is partnered by Illumination and Nintendo) became an enjoyable movie to watch simply because they respected the source material of the actual games that it was based on. Heck, they even made a nod on how Mario and Luigi are both live in Brooklyn from the first Super Mario Bros. move but made it 100x better by incorporating actual staying on the "script" of how Mario games work in the movie.
