So this may be a little late but the “hip bone” in the drawer is actually a cervical bone. Which is one of the bones in the upper spine or where the neck would be. Which makes sense based off of the anatomical size and relative shape. I’m not sure where this would go by way of theories but I thought it interesting to clarify here.

Imagine Salad Fingers Father. If his mother is already so mean, imagine the father. Because when glass mother said “wait till your father comes home” this was indicating the the father may be more mean.

He's my take: Jeremy got a young woman (probably the flirtatious persona) pregnant between the time he enlisted and the point he left to fight (flying out to find France) Once he realised, likely from a letter he received, he took leave (the letter about not coming to the front) in the hope that he could do right by her and marry her, perhaps he really did care for her. But when he got there her father was waiting, the reason he was so sure of Jeremy's intentions was because he had proof of them. Not wanting his daughter to marry Jeremy he killed him instead, possibly to prevent them running away if he simply said no. Thus leaving the soon to be mother to parent alone, likely disowned herself for what she did. When Salad was born his mother may have needed a C-section (Yvonne being born from Salad's stomach and the horse scene suggest this) Salad was fine but his mother, who was alone (the concerned 'mother' reassuring her was likely a midwife) developed some complication, maybe infection. Knowing she was seriously ill and possibly going to die she decided to give away her baby to Aunty Bainbridge, a woman who had just lost her own son Kenneth. Bainbridge took Salad in but she was still grieving, constantly comparing salad to the son she lost. The brother he never knew but was lead to believe was so much more a man than he was. Bainbridge and Kenneth are where the glass family comes from. They *are* Salad's inner self hate but manifested as the two people who lead him to believe he was less. The reason glass brother looks like Salad is likely a mix of hating his reflection and the fact he never met Kenneth. The 'real boy' symbolism and the fact that the baby Salad gave away could mean one of two things: either Salad was born baby Yvonne (or even Marjory when you consider the hair cutting) and Bainbridge, after losing her son decided this child could be her new little boy then when Salad grew she criticised him for not looking and acting like one. Or it could just be symbolism for him being less masculine than what was expected. Either way it's possible Hubert Cumberdale wasn't Salad's birth name, the radio insisting he get rid of his hair collection seems to imply Bainbridge wanted to erase his 'old family' from his life completely so he can be her property because that may be how she veiws children- As property. Which would also explain her willingness to shut down any form of self-expression because she needs full control.

i love the theme of internalization in this series. everything salad fingers says to the puppets seems to be directly inspired by what his family has said to him, glass brother is literally the voice in his head telling him he's not good enough, glass mother is the trauma and past of abuse that he can't let go of, and the entire storyline of a child abuse survivor having a child of their own which causes them to start dealing with and healing from their own trauma is very popular and an amazing way to explore a character's psychological complexity.

I think glass mother is the aunt from the ink baby episode!! And when his real mother died in childbirth, she stepped in and abused him. I mean, why would his own mother call him a "dirty immigrant" for being mixed when she was the one in the interracial relationship in the first place?

I don’t know why, but when salad fingers was having a mental breakdown about not being able to give glass mother the porridge, I felt really bad.

I also really like the idea that Salad could be ending generational trauma - as though he’s noticed himself pushing his upbringing onto Fleshboy (shown by him being taken into the mirror world) and instead choosing to become the parent he always wanted to have. It could also give a bit of clarification to the last line of “wait til your father gets home” because Salad was born without a father, but knows he doesn’t have to wait for it anymore, because he’s a father and isn’t going anywhere.

People can say Salad Fingers is creepy all they want, but his face after he creates Hubert into a real boy is so cute, his big eyes and smile are so adorable

TWO THINGS: 1.) I can’t help but think that glass mother and possibly father are actually his grandparents… saying that his dad ran away and his mom may have died in child birth SO his grandparents (who hate him not only because of racism but because he “killed” their daughter) are forced to raise him 2.) I LOVE how this series addresses trauma at the end with the book. As my therapist has told me, my trauma is in a little shoebox in the closet. Sometimes I take it out, look at it, understand what happened and how it affected me, but at the end of the day I can’t put it away.

The ending of this was so touching...I was kind of scared of Salad at first but now I'm genuinely rooting for him and can't wait to see what the next installment is going to be like.

Salad Fingers is the kind of show MADE for theories.

I think it's kind of comforting that salad fingers is taking care of Hubert, it makes me think that he might be (potentially) seeking out for help, or finding inner peace with himself.

I love the symbolism of that final bit of glass. In the world of fiction writing we call a character's fatal flaw, the thing holding them back from achieving their goals, the "shard of glass" since no matter what they're doing how or hard they try until they stop and address whatever bad memory or mistaken belief is causing them to make the wrong choices they won't be happy. Salad Fingers finally confronting his abusive childhood and self-hatred and putting away the, now tiny and far more manageable, glass shard is a much more uplifting and hopeful ending than the original episode 10 ending.

Matt, the reason salad fingers cuts himself on the shard is to show that he is using his wounds to make him a better person, by blocking out the negativeity, or atleast thats my thoughts

Thank you, seriously, thank you. I have a pretty bad life. I have family issues, friend issues, and overall a bunch of mental illnesses that make it really difficult to just live. I have a tendency to just give up. I make other people's lives bad because I hate my own, and I completely give up on using those bad experiences to learn and grow as a person. But this video was very eye-opening for me. When I first saw this a few years ago, I was much less mature and didn't think about it much. But when I watched it today, I realized that I don't have to let my bad experiences control me or my life. That I can go through bad things and still be my own person. I think glass mother is salad finger’s grandmother in the real world because his mother died in childbirth and the grandmother had to take care of him after she died. This would explain why she doesn’t like salad fingers. His birth caused her daughter to die and maybe sent her husband to jail for killing Salad’s father. Salad’s father would be the character leaving to France (or back to the war) to escape his possibly accidental child. He comes back early only to find that his girlfriend died in childbirth and he is then killed by her father. Salad is then raised by his angry grandmother as she waits for grandfather to come back from jail.

just finished watching, and I have to say its good to watch all three of these videos in one sitting especially before bed so u kind of get closure and can relax.

When Glass Brother talks, Salad's head doesn't mimic the movements of his reflection. But when he talks, the reflection in the mirror mimics his movements. That's an interesting detail to note

Tbh, I'm not really scared of Salad Fingers anymore. I feel bad for him. Yes, it is still very creepy and unnerving, but listening to MattPatt theorize about how Salad was abused and all that, it makes me sad.

I am also 99% sure that the flesh that the many Salad Fingers were eating was the flesh of the newly skinned Mildred Cubicle, because it’s not just the skin that’s missing but also all of the internal organs and muscles and such.

Matpat, how dare you make me develop an appreciation for Salad Fingers.

I know it's kinda weird to comment on such an old video but I wanted to put my personal opinion out there. I think Glass Mother and Brother aren't entirely manifestations of Salad's self hatred, but also represent how trauma breaks you. How you see your abusers in everything. Everything reminds you of what happened to you when you haven't healed, or been allowed to heal in the first place. Glass Brother looking exactly like Salad also makes me think of how some people see their abusers even in themselves. I think the ending is really touching, especially for someone like me who has experienced childhood trauma. Salad understands that the abuse he endured will always affect him and be a part of him, but he doesn't let it define him. He doesn't hang on to it. He lets go of what happened in the past and moves on to the future, as seen when he locks the shard in a box. It's similar to this but I think my opinion is more accurate. Sorry if this comment is a bit jumbled or anything I just wanted to get my thoughts out

The relationship between flesh boy and salad fingers remind me of a trauma response where children that were neglected grow up and care for thier "inner child".

Ok, this is very old but I’m rewatching it and I’m beginning to wonder…what if Hubert was Salad Finger’s twin brother or a form of his brother. It would explain why the reflections would be the same, why their birthdays are the same and stuff, and maybe why Glass brother wanted to kidnap him. What if Glass brother was like Salad finger’s real brother in the real world and Hubert is like a toy used to cope and pretend as if his brother was nicer? Now that wouldn’t explain how he sometimes refers to Hubert as his kid or flirts with him but again he could be a toy and kids use toys to cope with and process different scenarios. So Hubert was everything but was mostly used to handle the cruelty his mother and brother brought upon him. Idk just thought of that randomly.

There are two videos after episode 11. 'Salad Fingers 12: Post Man' and 'Salad Fingers - Market'.

It’s also important to notice how at the beginning of the episode he rips of most of Margery Stewart Baxter’s hair leaving a few strands left and then Glass Mother also only has a few hairs left. You know because she’s Hubert’s mom and Glass mother is Salad’s and they’re the same person.

I love how episode 12 was a huge unexpected episode, just going back to normal, not acknowledging anything, even kinda calling his mother a shoe as if we didn’t just see her

With the new knowledge from the latest episode I think this is how it happens. Salads father was a soldier in the war, they went to England to help with World War I and he met a young lady, they had a fling and she got pregnant but her father wanted him arrested because she was under age. As a sign of good faith he returned her to her father who was not very supportive of the baby and daddy salad fingers left off to go back to the “war“ and never came back. The father of the girl helped her raise the child(salad fingers) and was very abusive till he passed away likely as a civilian death from the war. She then raised him the same way her father did and even tried to end his life numerous times. Threatening him saying “you just wait till your father returns from the war” later in life she has another child by another man(Keneth) who they raise like a normal child in a non abusive way, instead now salad fingers had a mother and a new father who would take their frustrations out on him for his physical disability and his developmental problems which came from his upbringing as well as the fact that he was very feminine. After the step father died and Keneth went to the war he was left alone with her until she herself after many years died as well. Now he’s living with his past alone in a abandoned shack in the desolate wilderness, with his collection of rusty spoons and memories

Did anyone notice the larger mirror is broken in both worlds? If the mirror world is symbolic, that might mean it was Salad Fingers was in his room the entire time, and smashed the mirror.

How it went from scaring me to making me cry for him

So on top of salad fingers, one of the other cartoons David Firth has made is one called spoilsbury toast boy. It's a shorter series, but it's much more shocking and scarring than this one in my opinion. I think glass mother bears a striking resemblance to the grandmother in spoilsbury toast boy, as their voices are very similar, they both sit in rocking chairs, and aside from skin color they look very alike. Additionally, the grandmother in spoilsbury toast boy asks the main character to fetch her a speckled Huckleberry leaf, which is what glass mother tells salad fingers to add to his soup. I don't know if there's any correlation, but I think it might be worth looking into.

Something I have noticed in the episodes “picnic” when he finds a new playmate and the red hair puppet was shown as angry in the window as if he was cheating on his wife since the red hair puppet is shown as the wife and the ginger little girl also has the tiny button eyes like the puppets so she might just be a hallucination of one of his past memories of cheating on his wife
