Protip: If you have a sky or background that is maybe a bit overexposed and losing detail and clipping a bit, you can add a resolve glow effect to the brightest parts of the highlights in a node before Filmconvert to make it look a bit nicer and soften the edges

Thanks for any info you can share!
@dan_hitchman007
@dan_hitchman007 4 года назад
I would go to Puget Systems' website and look at their recommended hardware configurations based upon your needs. Then if you know something about computer building, start shopping for parts to make your own DIY editing rig. Just remember that some of Intel's chips need to be altered due to a cheapening of their manufacturing quality (there are third party sites that sell already modified CPU's), so they don't overheat.

Did you just make fun of my Microsoft Paint color grading process? Software shaming? Really Gerald? That's a low blow and you know it! Lol. Thanks for the tutorial. I asked you this in one of your live streams, but I'd like to follow up with it here. You said you shoot artsy fartsy stuff on the side that you just have in drives and stuff. I was wondering if you could create stuff with it, grade it, post it, and do a tutorial on it? I understand you run a business with your wife, so you probably won't have time, but I think what you provide on the nerdy side of film/photography will be greatly balanced with proof of concept that's more than just you sitting in your studio. Just an idea! Also I'd love to see a "must have plugins" or "my favorite plugins" for Davinci Resolve. That will also probably take a bunch of time since you put so much research into each one, but I have to ask for it anyways, since I trust your opinion so much! Maybe I'm missing something, but what's the point of buying (are you getting commission?) a plug-in, adding another interface on top of what Resolve can already do, if you spend the time to learn it? The curves, mid-tones, noise, grain controls are all there. I guess a few sliders are easier and simple for the lazy, maybe just buy some LUT packs and shove one on. I generally enjoy your content, but that being said, I bought a Viltrox adaptor on your recommendation, which I usually respect, but you only tested it with one lens, the Sigma 18-35. I don't have that lens but took a chance anyway. I use adapted lenses, Nikkor, Leica R, M, Canon, but for example, with the EF 35 1.4 on the pocket 4k it was complete shite, Mandler glow meets a nuclear explosion wide open, unusable, so sent it back....
@geraldundone
@geraldundone 4 года назад
No, I'm not getting a commission. Yes, the controls are all there, but it's not very easy to get faithful film emulations unless you know exactly what you're targeting. And I like film emulation. Sorry to hear that you had bad luck with the Viltrox. The point of that video was about pairing those adapters with the 18-35mm on the Pocket 4K. I tested it with the 5 different lenses I had and didn't have any issues other than the mount issues I mentioned. There is known variance in the Viltroxes though--some copies are better than others. You get what you pay for. It's a cheap adapter and works well for what I was using it for, but I wouldn't expect any miracles. I try to be as open and forthcoming as possible in my videos, and don't make recommendations I don't stand behind. Not sure what you're expecting from your comment. Kinda sounds like you're just calling me a shill.
@paolobacardi
@paolobacardi 4 года назад
@@geraldundone No, I'm not calling you a shill at all Gerald, just saying my experience has been different from yours, maybe I was unlucky with my copy of the Viltrox. The mount was nice and tight on the one I had. At the moment I haven't gone for the Metabones. Love the RAW on the 4K and just sticking to M lenses at the moment. For a wider view might try a Laowa, but like shallow DOF, so most probably looking to go full frame with some AF in the grand theme of things.... Always find it funny, the film emulation thing. Take pristine modern digital imagery and then make it look like 1980. I'm not against it at all, I still sometimes shoot film, I like vintage lenses, but some reverse psycholgy going on. Anyway, I wasn't having a pop at you, keep up the good work, cheers :)
@geraldundone
@geraldundone 4 года назад
@@paolobacardi Yeah, I know what you mean. I feel that way about vintage lenses too. Sometimes it's fun, sometimes it seems nonsensical to create a softer image. Appreciate it. Cheers! 🤓🙏

Payed advertisement for a lousy product!! Look at their camera files!! Samsung nx1, iPhone from 7 years old. New Sony’s or Canon? ‘ no that’s coming soon’ they say. Btw BE CAREFUL! When installing apple warns that the files contain malware!

So you buy an expensive and advanced camera and then spend more money to make it look like an outdated tech. Sorry maybe it’s because I don’t like the look but to me it’s pointless.

Do you know today, in hollywood, there are many movies using old lenses, filters, and many times they ad grain in post to make it like a outdated tech? That is because with time they discovered that the new leses are very sharp, very perfect, and out of personality. When you film with a cinema camera, they image is very clean and digital. it is not very pleasing. The old tech is more organic. more pleasing, and there are a lot of movies filmed in 35mm ( For example all Tarantino and Christopher Nolans movies.)

Look my point simply is that people buy these cameras and complain about the lowest amount of noise and picture not being sharp enough. Then turn around and apply all these filters that soften the footage add film grain which might as well be noise to people that don’t do video and call it the best thing ever. Hence why I think it’s silly but that’s just my opinion. Put it simply I think this is no different than all these hipsters running around claiming thatlistening to music and the record is much more high fidelity which in fact could not be farther from the truth.

@@Preacherski Digital noise is completely different than film grain. The camera's many options give you more *control*. That logic is the same as complaining about buying film lights that look like lamps or have fire effects because "you can just light a lamp or start a fire". Both come from ignorance and little experience. This isn't Hollywood, but for many of us, to look like a Hollywood film is the obvious goal.

@@DemetriosLevi so just use an old film camera. Sorry but this is just plain silly to me. And average viewer doesn’t see the difference between noise or film grain
