Filming and photographing Red kites and Buzzards with the Lumix G9 II and the OM-1 cameras

In this film I visit a private site in Northamptionshire to film and photograph Red kites and Buzzards from a hide. The hide belongs to local photographer Steve Magennis. He is lucky enough to have access to this estate for his wildlife photography and has been photographing these birds for some time.
Both species appeared in numbers and I was lucky to see a lot of interaction between them.
The Lumix G9 Mk2 performed very well in video mode with the AF following the kites around in flight. For stills photography I used the OM-1 as always. Both camera were used on the OM 150-400mm lens.
Steve is looking to build a permanent wooden hide and offer photography days here, but it may be possible to use his hides this winter to. His email address is photosstevemagennis@gmail.com
Send him an email to enquire.

Great video Mike thank you for posting. The buzzard striking the kite is amazing along with the photo bombing magpie 👍

Thanks Mike. Really interesting to see both cameras working the scene. I love the slow motion video. Private land with baited birds gives lots of opportunity for camera testing which most people don’t have.

Thanks Mike, for taking the time to make this video, I also have purchased the G9MKII for video and have gotten the same results, but only using a tripod and not handheld. Great hybrid camera, with a ""native" long focal zoom lens for handheld shooting. That been said, I have tried many settings on my Om1 for video and now get a much better result in video with these 2 settings. Video speed setting is now at 0 and my video sensitivity setting is -1, resulting in the camera sticking on subject much better using AFC in Movie Mode. I do not use AF tracking with video. BTW, I'm the guy that explained to you and Dennis how to turn on focus peaking and have it stay on, in the "video manual mode" using the OM1 in his RU-vid channel when you commented there because you were having the same issue. Anyways as far as the G9 MKII and using the Oly 150-400mmpro is the inability to have the dual IBIS, so taking handheld video and even stills, I'm looking at a very shaky EVF which is VERY disappointing. I love my Oly 150-400 pro. but luckily, I never sold my Panasonic Leica 100-400 native lens resulting in super rock steady handheld when set on Dual IBIS for stills, and in Boost I.S. for video. I'm always moving around for "the shot" so rarely do I use a tripod. I shot my best ever video the other day using the G9MKII and the Panasonic/Leica 100-400mm lens in slow motion handheld with an Osprey in flight coming straight at me (eye to eye amazing) with a mullet in its talons and then lands 2 meters away on its perch. The whole video is laser sharp. If I would have been on a tripod, I would have never captured this moment. I have gotten used to carrying around my OM1 with the dual battery grip and the 150-400 pro, beefy looking but still a very lite weight kit. To now carrying a much smaller G9MK11 and P/L 100-400 which is very strange to me. But whatever, so I carry them both on hikes, now. I have also used the G9MK11 with the Oly 12-40 f2.8 pro and the Pany 9mm F1.7 for B-roll with no issues it just using the longer focal lengths with Olympus glass that there is an issue. Keep the Great videos coming. Especially the bird in flight instructional videos.

@joeyret.617
@joeyret.617 5 месяцев назад
Well, I can only comment handholding for video and stills using the G9mkii and the Oly 150-400pro and since it is not a native lens the IS is poor unless you are on the tripod. For stills handheld you need to shoot at a ss min 1500 wide open. Now that being said, since I still own the native P/L 100-400 lens I got available dual stab for stills and Boost IS for video which I love, its rock steady. Amazing the stickiness of the new G9mk11 in video mode. No issues even filming the subject behind foliage. Love the near and far focus feature on the G9mk11 which I assigned it to the 2 front buttons on the camera. My main stills camera is still the OM1 because I love my Oly 150-400pro. Racking the focus on this lens is super-fast with only I quarter turn. Super important for me when shooting birds in flight. There is no way to rack the focus ring like that on the P/L 100-400. @@simpedros4766

FantStic video clip Mike. I watched your previous clip of the G9 II regarding video and this confirms the video capability. I am most impressed with G9 II. My OM-1 is not much good at video and Sony a1 although better will not stay locked onto bird at any great distance shooting. Seriously looking at buying the G9 II as a replacement for my G9 in view of the video capability. Keep on posting your superb hands on wildlife clips 👌😊

Lovely shots excellent stuff. We have many red kites around the Chilterns area not too far from me where they were released 30 years ago. It's a splendid site when you see dozens of them suddenly appear diving and fighting. Some of the locals feed them have them eating in their gardens. I saw that the OM1 version 2 is rumoured to be announced hope they add 4k120 might consider getting one but the G9II is looking awsome.

I do not use the 100-400 too much. It is a backup lens I carry on a trip just in case the 150 400 packs up. Also I pass it to my wife to keep her occupied when travelling together. So I don't know the answer. Sorry

Quick question Mike. When using the G9 II with OM System lenses I assume the lens IS does not operate and just the camera stabilization is functional ??
@janwedek
@janwedek 6 месяцев назад
It’s the other way around. Only lens OIS if it has it. If you turn of OIS on the lens, you will have no stabilization. You cannot use just IBIS. For telephoto at least this is usually the better choice anyway

Two many options for me to remember. I can comfirm that only the lens IS is working with the 150-400mm and the Lumix G9 mk2. I have a distant memory that your are right to assume the Lumix body IS works with none IS lenses, but it has all got very complicated.

Thanks Mike. Love your hands on field approach for testing equipment. Much better than these “techy” reviews and comparisons. So yes With the G9 mark ii looks like using my 150-400mm lens will use the lens IS but with the Olympus 40-150mm, which has no IS, then the camera IS will be used. I will be trying out the G9 mark ii for its video capability. Not only looks like a good AF but also the 120fps is fantastic for slow motion. Keep on posting your excellent video clips 😊😊
