Brian Woodman, WU Film & Media Curator presents filmmaker Marco Williams with the St. Louis International Film Festival (SLIFF) Contemporary Cinema Award before the screening of “Tell Them We Are Rising” directed by Williams and Stanley Nelson.
Co-presented with Washington University Libraries’ Film & Media Archive as part of the Henry Hampton Film Series on Nov. 3, 2017. With co-director Williams, SLIFF Contemporary Cinema Award honoree. Sponsored by African & African-American Studies Program at Washington University.
“Tell Them We Are Rising” explores the pivotal role that historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have played in American history, culture, and national identity. Today, more than half of all African-American professionals are graduates of HBCUs. The documentary tells the story of HBCUs’ vital importance to America’s black population, demonstrating the power of higher education to transform lives and advance civil rights and equality in the face of intolerance and injustice. The film is co-directed by an all-star duo of documentarians: former SLIFF Contemporary Cinema Award honoree Stanley Nelson and Marco Williams, who receives the award at this year’s fest. -- Cinema St. Louis
