The robots are a real threat, but you didn't miss hear the eSports part. The army recruited eSports players to fight the robots because they had better reaction times 🤣

I agree with you about it not being the best, particularly in terms of story telling. D.va was one of my favourite characters, so I was pretty hyped for this cinematic, and it was cool enough, but felt a little flat. I feel like they were experimenting in this phase with the right way to balance character and action, with the Mei cinematic being much more character focused, this one trying to find a better balance, and ultimately culminating in the Kiriko and Sojourn ones which are really well balanced. For context the robots are made and controlled by a giant underwater AI off the cost of Korea that they have been fighting for years. It keeps adapting and attacking with stronger and stronger robots each time.

I did hear that part, I was just a bit confused by the actual enemy, I don't actually know who the enemy is as I thought it was mostly player VS player type thing. This is why I think it needs a campaign.

@@kaizammit Basic story here is there was a robot uprising many years ago where they wanted to kill off humanity. Eventually a cease fire and treaty were made and the robots (omnics) now live with humanity in "peace" (those humans that lived during the war still hate them and thus there are problems). The modern day story is that tensions are rising currently between humans and omnics with the terrorist group Talon fanning the flames in secret. As for who THESE robots are, they are actually part of the original uprising from years ago. Most of the robots agreed to peace but some like this group still fight to this day. They have been assaulting South Korea for years now in a never ending arms race as though the war never ended. There is some sort of hidden under sea base/factory off the coast that they can't find producing bots to attack every few months. Here they tried to pull a fast one and launch an attack within the same day as the last one while the humans were recovering and thinking they were safe for a few months. As stated above, they use esports players for pilots due to reaction time and such as normal soldiers apparently couldn't run the mechs properly. They can't use AI systems as the bots have hacked any they have tried to use before. As such there is a theory that the mechs are fully manual ie no automatic systems to get hacked. As such they would be ridiculous to operate since you would have to control everything at once. This is supported by in game animations and voice lines with Dva' defense matrix (the thing she used to stop the missiles) having a voice line of "time to raise my apm" (actions per minute, ie how many inputs she is making to the mech) and her manually manipulating buttons and thumbsticks on her controls while "blocking" projectiles. This has led people to think she is manually shooting the projectiles out of the air with the holographic projection just being a visual aid to help her tell distance or direction of travel of the projectiles. Dva isn't in the in world organization called Overwatch, shes one of the characters in the universe that are just... in the world and also in the game. She is a member of the South Korean Defense Force whose entire job is to defend the coast from the robot attacks. She would have been a child back when Overwatch were still active. Not all characters in the game were a part of Overwatch, some are just criminals, some are Talon, some are random people that just have power or tech or skills.

@@kaizammit It does have a bit of a campaign, just a start of one that they released some time ago. However, most of the lore comes from these cinematics, as well as the comics and the stories. Unfortunately, missing out on the comics and stories means you miss out on a lot of lore and a lot of context.

@@kaizammit You've watched a lot of the other Overwatch cinematics, it's the same world. Where there was an Omnic Crisis. Each cinematic gives you a piece of that world from different countries, different characters both before, during, and after the Omnic crisis. Oh boy I have a lot to say about this cinematic. First point is the flashback scene. I think it does a great job of highlighting a kind of 'ptsd' like moment for her. The way it cuts to her same shocked expression, like she's still right back at that battle scene, remembering how awful and scary it was. The flashback also does a second thing. Did you notice? When the show was talking about the battle, they showed it as if it were in the daytime, but in the flashback, it was dark and stormy. This, combined with how they said she emerged 'without a scratch' gives this impression that the Korean media/government, for whatever reason, wants to push the narrative that the meka squad's adventures and defense of the city is all very light-hearted; it's why it made you think it was just a game, they treated it like it was, bc that's the propaganda of it. They don't want the Korean citizens to be afraid. They want to feel like Dva and the squad are these invincible heroes engaging in exciting adventures when, in reality, it's a terrifying job that leaves them mentally scarred. Second thing is the last part of the flashback before Dva 'snaps out of it.' "I'm hit!" echoes right as it cuts back. We as the audience have the benefit of knowing the whole squad made it out alive, but in that moment, in that battle, if you're Dva, you don't know that. As far as she knew, that 'I'm hit!' was her friend's last words. As far as she knew, that might very well could have been the last time she ever heard the voice of her friend, and it's not 'goodbye' or 'I love you' but just a panicked 'I'm hit.' Imagine that. The last memory of your friend being how they were blown to pieces out of the sky. That's what sticks with her. Even though they all made it out alive, that's what haunts Dva. Knowing that the next battle could be their last. It makes me think, too, the constant theme in these shorts is heroism, but not like the glamorized always invincible heroes, but all the heroes all come across as flawed and complex. She's 19 and clearly talented. She could have lived the rest of her life as an esports star, but she chose the life of service instead. It called to her, despite the risk to her young life. Speaking of which, my other favorite moment is right before she asks dae-hyun for help. It goes to her first-person perspective and the focus pulls from the omnic in front of her to the city behind it. It's a visual cue that Dva is remembering what really matters: the city. The people she's defending. Her ego, her desire to do it 'all alone' is meaningless compared to the need to fight for what is right. That's why and how she finally decides to let it go and asks for help. Also, did you notice? She quickly comes up with the idea to blow the mech, putting her life at risk, but contrast that with how hard it was for her to simply ask for help. For her, dying for her people is a more comfortable and easy notion to her than asking for help. That's how tough that is for her. Also as a final note I like the wrench scene at the end bc not only does it help w the final scene, but it's also a quick metaphor for her newfound comfort in asking for help. She needs his help, he picks up the wrench and hands it to her, and she accepts it now without question. I love this cinematic.

Yep same here, I don't understand the two parts split if there are already analyzing points straight ahead, speaking over the whole thing, missing maaaany things (they said "former game champion turned ace pilot" clearly) each time and getting them only in the second watch, while missing most of the immerssion/appreciation. It's not that bad of a thing, but quite frustrating and painful to watch :).

I think it just depends on the cinematic. For example, Dragons, Honor and Glory, and Hero made him emotional and invested. Also, idk, even in this one, even tho he was also talking shop thru some moments in the first watch through, I still got the impression he was being impacted by the story.

Across the whole of the Overwatch universe the main threat is a variety of robots. They used to be servants and war machines but they became sentient and rebelled. (Obviously this helps keep the game tone PG-13ish as you are mostly fighting robots) Korea has a HUGE eports scene, including Overwatch itself, and this is a wink and a nod to that, the idea that a talented gamer might be recruited to fight in the real world.
@Ziir93
@Ziir93 4 дня назад
Sorry to be like "umm achshully" xd they gained sentience after the rebellion, in fact them gaining sentience is how the crisis was ended thanks to Aurora's sacrifice. The Gwishin and other war machines like them are controlled by the god programs like Anubis. But I don't think we know what is controlling the Gwishin.

I really enjoy your content. I wish you had a Discord server where it would be possible to engage with your community. And I am saying that because I find your combination of very deep, theoretical insight with your absolutely laid-back sense of humour very fun. Your personality is simply very interesting. I think you should consider it, unless you already have such a server and I am out of the loop. Also, since I've been making music videos for a while (not on this channel), I consider your insight extremely valuable, even if I knew a lot of it before. This is because each time you judge the composition, lighting, camera movement, etc. you don't just use buzz-words like "oh yeah 3-point lighting, oh yeah rule of thirds, oh yeah open composition". Instead, you show, using the footage itself, what it accomplishes and what you could also do differently. You explain the intention, not the technique. I don't understand why you don't have much, much more subscribers. This is genuinely a goldmine for filmmakers. I know there are other "filmmakers reacts to" videos on RU-vid, but those people rarely explain anything. They even give off the impression that they enver actually thought about why the techniques they know work. P.S. (completely unrelated) - if you are looking either for a software engineer please let me know because I am about to die of boredom after 8 years of working amongst sleep inducing corpo suits, lmao. I can also edit videos and color grade, so I could live a double life - programmer during the day - editor at night 🤣.

@sphinxwar8529
@sphinxwar8529 4 дня назад
@@kaizammit (youtube will probably shorten this commend to the "read more" format, sorry for the length haha). Thanks for the reply! Sure, I can kind of narrow down what it is to you. You seem to be around my age so I am sure you'll know TeamSpeak. It was popular even outside of hardcore PC gaming circles. Now, Discord has basically the same purpose as TeamSpeak, to allow people to communicate while gaming, but instead of being just a voice ccommunicator for you and a few of your friends, it's designed to be used by an entire community. Even as big as hundreds of thousands of people. It allows for creating both text and voice channels for people to talk in, appointing moderators so that they can keep that space safe without you having to be there at all. You can just drop in whenever you want as well if you're busy. People can also leave you direct messages there, and even if you're not at your PC or mobile at the moment, you can read them later. The way you create a server is quite straightforward - when you're logged into your discord account, you click on a plus icon on the server list (a column of circular icons at the very left edge of the app window) and fill in the details of your server. After that you create an invite link you can share in the description of your videos. People can join simply by clicking it. You can do it by clicking the name of your server at the top section of your server. A context menu should appear where you can click "Invite more people". Make sure to make the invite last longer than 7 days though, because that's the default. You can click a checkbox to make it indefinite. This invite link allows everybody to just click and join. Your server can even be initially completely empty, you can still start inviting people to it, since at the start only you have admin powers, so there's no risk of people messing up the creation phase. Those people who join early can even help with setting everything up, if you appoint them as admins or moderators. RU-vid would straight up shadow ban or delete this comment if I gave you a direct link but if you google "discord communicator" I bet you will find it as the first result, since it's hugely popular. You can use it on PC, iOS, Android and some more OSes. Hope this helps, feel free to reply if you have more questions :)!

others have already said it but I may as well say it, too, because otherwise this entiire comment looks disconnected; she was an eSports champion and became an 'ace pilot' at the Busan mecha base (it's an in-game map and is the building they're in). there's no connection to Overwatch, the organisation. the Busan mecha base is protecting against the Gwishin, a faction of omnics that are aggressive and attack Korea every few months. it's kind of Pacific Rim-esque; enemy from the big body of water (Pacific Ocean in Pacific Rim, East China Sea in Overwatch) attacks, the attacks used to be further apart but became more common and humans built robots to fight them. omnics, as a whole, were built by sentient factories called omniums, which I'm sure others have commented about before. that sentience from the omniums caused the omnics to go to war with humanity, and they were eventually stripped of that aggressive programming and given sentience of their own; it's why you see omnics chillin in Alive and one implied to be in a relationship, it's why Bastion is the way he is in The Last Bastion, etc.. without their aggressive programming, they could choose what they wanted to do, and the vast majority wanted a peaceful life. there are monks within the omnic numbers such as Mondatta (died in Alive) and Zenyatta (hero in the game), who believe in the Iris. someone else can correct me, but I think the Iris is what gave them sentience? I don't fully remember. the Gwishin are, as far as I can tell from the wiki, newer made and so didn't have that sentience update that the omnic war omnics had. given that it looks like there were about two decades between Shooting Star and the omnic war, it makes sense they'd be different omnics. they are a significant threat in-universe. fun fact; the explosion is her in-game ultimate. you can launch that MEKA into an area and then blow it up while trying not to die as D.Va (or 'baby D.Va' if you're trying to get your team to kill her). this is also why no one probably thought she'd died; we've all seen her yell 'NERF THIS' and blow up at least one of your teammates and the animations tend to be set before the game they're for. this one was for Overwatch 1, and D.Va was released at the game's launch. the other mechas are in the base when you play on it, though, so there's a chance this isn't set pre-Overwatch 1..

dont know if youve ever mentioned any plans to do so, but you NEED to watch Andor. most of the disney star wars projects have been handicapped by use of the volume and appealing to kids, but this show truly feels like something completely in its own category. its a crime/espionage thriller and also a pretty interesting commentary on oppression and rebellion, and the radicalism on both sides. this show is sort of a look into the life and struggles of ordinary people in the empire and that world building is definitely one of the highlights. it starts out a little slow but its all setup and it gets better with every episode, and i wont spoil anything but towards the end there are some seriously fantastic monologues.

I would like to know after u see the old one and the new one like Kiriko or Junker Queen if they focus are different or it just my imagination, because they are good but it's feel so different in an emotional way. In my opinion Soldier 47, Dva, Genji, Rehinard, Bastion, or even Mei tell sad storys , from old soldier how fight in war, what they lost, or tragedis meanwhile the new ones feel more like a bit party cool. Again they are good but the focus change for me. May be it's just my impresion but I dont finish to conect with some of the new one, they feel more agressive or the needs to call atentions meanwhile old ones have some slow part to reflextion or understand ths sadness. Perhaps it's just the focus of the game, the idea ofOW1 and the new face they want to give it in OW2

Think of these mech pilots like the military reqruiting top tier video gamers for military drone/robot pilotes. The robots are a major threat in the world. Think of it like terminator but the robots didnt win but they are a huge threat always trying to figure out a way to defeat humanity. So like the bastion and reinhart cinimatics they have the first omnic war (bastion being a foot soldier for the robots during that war.) Currently their are like good robots who try to integrate into society (the tracer widow maker cinamatic) and the current omnic crisis like these "evil robots" who are like a main badguy of the world.

Her MEKA plays to her strengths as an esports champion; the Defense Matrix is a front-facing holo-tracker that allows her to manually shoot down EVERY SINGLE projectile in its field of view, because she's got that APM and reflexes to track them, she's on aimbot levels. It's quick and agile with the booster engines, and can react to midrange threats with a rocket barrage and short-range with the arm cannons, and of course as a last resort, you can eject and blow the whole thing up, taking it and everything nearby along with it

So this is why I'm here and I keep coming back. Your ending comments about how breaking it down and going through a second time helped you appreciate and enjoy it more, noticing the finer details that you may not have noticed at first (lol "but your brain did"?). Going through these with the comb you're applying is REALLY helpful to pull even more enjoyment out of things like this for someone like me that is on the outside of the industry but is absolutely fascinated by it. Kinda makes me want to go back like 20 years and see if I could have found a place to fit into some sort of creative industry. Thanks for these, seriously.

This is probably my least favorite overwatch short. Mainly because i think it misses its mark. The moral of the story is SUPPOSED to be about Diva learning that she can't do everything herself...but is that message really reinforcement within the story? IMO not really. She does asked for help but that dude doesn't really do much. In the end she still has to do 99.99% of the work to stop the machines. They should've given the young man more agency and his actions needed to have a more immediate impact on the last robot. At the very least, it should've been HIS idea to blow up her mech, not hers. That would've been better.

I see what you're saying, but it came across to me that if he didn't mention the core overloading, she wouldn't have thought of the idea. In real life that's how it is sometimes. Sometimes we're absolutely lost, but only one tiny idea, one that might not even be totally directly related to the ultimate solution, pushes us to it. I think that's what communicates for me and I like it for that.

@@hugomendoza5665Respectfully, I find it hard to give him a lot of credit for that idea when he doesn't even agree with her doing it in the first place. That's why I felt it should've been his idea to begin with; then we can say he truly helped her. The way it's shown here, he provides so little assistance that he could've been written out entirely and the story would've been pretty much the same. Her lack of trust in others is also somewhat reinforced when it's shown she's part of a larger team that comes across as if they don't pull their own weight. This short makes those teammates feel super irrelevant and also could've been left out entirely with no change to anything. I just feel like if the message here is, asking for help is a good thing...that "help" should've been way more impactful to sell the message.

She was a Star Craft esports professional, before she got recruited as a mecha-pilot. If I remember correctly. Some of her lines in the game and in HotS reflect that. The overloading of the mech and the shooting at the core to trigger the explosion are actual game mechanics.

@@mdvids It was a very soft retcon, because she was never explicitly stated to be a StarCraft pro, just a pro who did play StarCraft because of her dad. It was just the way they initially teased her led many to believe she was directly a pro in StarCraft.
