No no. Top 5 of the first 3 seasons so far? Yes! But the Top 5 episodes of the series are all within Seasons 4 and 5. This is nothing compared to what's to come.
@jaym10918
@jaym10918 Год назад
@@amacuro That's a fair argument but I respectfully disagree, and I will explain why. This is my fourth viewing of this series so my opinion of this episode may be different than some folks. It is true that the later seasons (especially 6), get darker and just like breaking bad, feature a payoff that benefits from all the set up from the previous seasons. And I will agree with you that many of the best episodes are in the last season for sure. But this episode stands out for me because of how important it is to Jimmy's development as a character, and how it managed to make me sympathetic towards him. Chuck couldn't let go of his hatred and as a result, Jimmy was forced to use his talents to destroy his brother. This episode was the culmination of so many hours of set up and it was wrapped up perfectly in one of the best half hour court scenes I've ever seen. When you look back at this episode and see the profound impact that this event had on Jimmy and his relationship with his brother, the ripple effect it had on him throughout the rest of his life, and also how it laid the groundwork for Jimmy's interactions with other characters throughout the rest of the series, it's hard not hold this episode in very high regard. But that's my opinion.
@amacuro
@amacuro Год назад
Yeah hard to argue with what you said, since I agree with all of it! And you are also right that the pay off and impact of future episodes is what boost them, as opposed to this episode which seeds for future events. I want to say that I think of this episode as one of the highlights of the whole series. I just get so much more adrenaline and overall awe of the events from Seasons 4 and 5. But totally valid what you said, I agree with all of it.@@jaym10918

Yeah I'd agree. Jimmy isn't a good guy. At this point he barely qualifies as an anti-hero. But this episode is the culmination of his relationship with his brother. Chuck is an asshole. If Chuck had been more loving and forgiving, Jimmy could've been an amazing lawyer. Jimmy stood by Chuck and helped throughout his imaginary infliction, but Chuck fucked him over constantly in return.

This is where I TRUELY felt it started surpassing Breaking Bad. I feel like I was frozen watching the entire court room scene the same way we held on Hank at the end of BB. I like how BCS introduced strong new characters and didn't rely on the old favorites from BB. 2 fun bits from the early part of the episode ... Chuck complains (falsely) that the electric company mixed up his bills with another house ... that they "transposed the numbers", just like Mesa Verde. Weird karmic echo? Also, when Rebecca answers the phone at the dinner, she says she's on the phone with the conductor ... she means an orchestra leader, but "conductor" like electricity immediately feeds further into Chuck's electricity anxiety.

The part where Chuck breaks down and goes off in the courtroom always makes me sad. The problem wasn't that Chuck was lying, because we know he wasn't. He's right about everything he accused Jimmy of. But it's his relentless and irrational attempts to bring his own brother down like he was an inferior. That, combined with his perceived illness to electricity is what let's us know he had serious problems. Problems that should've been helped.

@@neojc128really zero. The thing is that he liked when he was able to play the morally and intellectually superior person. Once Jimmy got a law degree he did EVERYTHING in his power to be an invisible hand there to slap him and keep him down. That’s when he realized that “I’m doing EVERYTHING right and still unable to get anywhere” so he went back to slippin Jimmy. The real rub for Chuck is that Jimmy did nighttime/correspondence courses from a unrated “university” *and yet still passed the same bar exam as Chuck.* THATS why he wants him disbarred, because he can’t ever look at or treat Jimmy as an equal.

@@marquisdelafayette1929 You're right. I do think Chuck loves him, but there's some deep seeded stuff going on. I think you can tell that Chuck loves Jimmy from some upcoming flashbacks, later in this season, and 4 and 6. In the end, I don’t think Jimmy could ever have settled as a lawyer without finagling and cutting corners - look at how he blew up the Davis and Main job independent of Chuck or Howard - he fundamentally thinks it’s a waste of his skill set not to. imo Chuck wasn’t a demon for recognising that.

This has to be one of the best monologues in TV history given by Chuck. Every time I rewatch this show, I find it more and more insane how it got snubbed of every award it should've won. Michael McKean should've gotten recognition in this season, Rhea Seehorn should've gotten recognition for every season, Bob Odenkirk should've won, etc. I know there's a lot of good TV out in the world, but Better Call Saul remains one of the best written and best acted shows I've ever seen. The sad thing is that everything Chuck is accusing Jimmy of? It's all correct. But it comes from a place of such deep resentment that it doesn't matter. He's right for the wrong reasons. Also something interesting I can't believe I didn't notice until now: Jimmy's way of nailing Chuck, was the same as Chuck's way of nailing Jimmy. Chuck knew the actual confession was inadmissible, but it was about using that to provoke Jimmy into an incriminating act. Chuck's mental illness and relationship to Jimmy is irrelevant to whether Jimmy committed a felony - and he did! - but it was about using that to provoke Chuck into completely undermining his own competency.

actually his relationship with Jimmy is part of the defense. His argument is that he only "admitted" those things to appease his brother so he would feel better, not that he actually did them. And that the only reason that "confession" exists is because Jimmy loved Chuck but Chuck hated Jimmy.

I'm a law student, and this is personally one of my favorite episodes of any show of all time. It's not 100% accurate. However, as a bar hearing, it doesn't have to totally align to the standards you would see in a typical courtroom. Even then, what they show in this bar hearing is a lot closer to what an actual court room is than what you see in most court scenes in other shows and movies. And, every minor detail that might not be realistic is 100% understandable for purposes of the story. Yet another example of why the fact that this show never won an Emmy is something unforgivable.

I've been waiting for this reaction since you first saw Chuck's true feelings in 'Pimento'. This is the climax of Jimmy's story across the first 3 seasons of the show. You could argue it IS the climax of Jimmy's story if you choose to consider Saul seperately. I watched it while packing up my things to move and normally I'd only be giving 60% focus when I watch like that, but I instinctively knew when Chuck took the stand that I was watching something big, and by the time of the Chicanery monologue my eyes were glued to the screen.

When you talk about Chuck holding the stealing cash from his father I think the earlier episode showed that yes Jimmy did that but only after witnessing his father being so gullible. So yes his father's business went badly because of money but that episode showed that, while Jimmy didn't help the situation, his father's naive nature towards others was the real fatal flaw for the business. But Chuck blames it all on Jimmy.

There were many hints before, but this episode really cemented how much jealousy Chuck has towards Jimmy. He believes himself to be the smarter, more righteous and disciplined brother, always doing what he thinks he is supposed to do, but despite that people always end up liking Jimmy more, including his parents. Or at least he feels that way, we don't actually know the objective reality of their childhood. We could feel the jealousy that one time when Jimmy was telling lawyer jokes to Rebecca, we could see it in that scene where he refused to tell his brother their mother's last words and it is palpable in this episode.

@@pencil6965 It proved that chuck's EHS was, indeed, in his head. Thus forcing the court to reevaluate the whole situation.

"the camera is exhaling" wow the phrasing really mirrors what's shown, had such a hard time putting that into words, that really conveyed what that pan out meant to the audience

We’ve been waiting for this episode since you started Breaking Bad! Yes, even before BCS. Man, Jimmy is the only one that could make a dude spitting 100% facts look crazy as hell. What a show, what an episode, and what a channel to re-experience it with!

"Need to fit him in a tight space?" I love Huell so much. And big shoutouts to Lavell Crawford for shedding weight. IIRC they wanted him to wear a suit to make him look larger for this but he refused. Legendary episode and great reaction.

The teaser as well IMO: Chuck's far-fetched stories to cover up the truth are fairly similar to Walter's. They are the ones who lie!

I forgot that for one of the few times in this show, there's a moment where you can read the face of literally every person in the room like a book. Its right after Chucks outburst. Seeing Rebecca and Kim almost made me want to cry. Because both of them were. And Jimmy's heart is broken and you can see clearly that he did not want to have to do that. And Howard looks like he wants to vomit And I'm pretty sure that is much more than because that hurts the case. Everybody in that room that knows Chuck really loves him. And I think everybody but Jimmy didn't realize the extent of his mental illness. Damn it.....this show is so good.

My favorite episode! [Edit] Some notes I have about this episode that you may find interesting: 1. When Chuck was practicing his testimony, one of his first attempts compared his and Jimmy's relationship to "Ted Kaczynski" and his brothers relationship. Ted Kaczynski was the Unibomber, and Ted's brother was the reason he got caught. 2. Chuck ruined his relationship with his wife by lying and not owning up to his mistakes, and JIMMY was the one who warned him not to lie, to which Chick ignored him because he thought he knew better. He truly only cares when its Jimmy who lies, impying it really is a grudge and not just because "the law is sacred." 3. Howard once again tries to warn Chuck against something, but chuck ignores his advice. 4.Cases like this have to be slightly practised before hand in real life, so when Kim objects, she actually already objected in the pretrial, so the way she words it is more akin to "just a reminder that I objected to this before" so that the offical record states that she objects, and she isnt surprised when her objection is overruled. Just a neat fact.

Chuck is simply a horrible person. Sibling squabbles are very common and perhaps all but universal. But to this insane level? I was a bit surprised Howard seemed shocked about the apparent revelation of that Howard's condition is psychosomatic. Howard is very intelligent and could have easily googled this even then.

Chuck self destructing is one thing but what is worse, for Charles personally, is that he now realises that his "illness" is not real. He sat with a phone battery close to his cheast for over an hour and felt nothing. He realises that he's mentally ill
