Filmmaker Reacts to BTS Fake Love MV & Shooting Sketch | BTS Reaction 

He broke his own record of how many times he rewatches 😅 Enjoy this very long video! (This was filmed before PTD Vegas because everyone was suggesting it and I knew I'd play on the screen before the concert and didn't want it to be spoiled)

Fun fact: The background art work is a rendition of "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil".

Jeff talked about how this feels like a dream. I don’t think anyone highlighted the lyrics of the chorus, “In a dream that can’t come true, I raised a flower that couldn’t bloom.”

This video is ART at its finest. Please don't worry about how often you pause. I'd rather you pause every 10 seconds so that you can absorb everything, rather than continue watching and miss something you might have appreciated.

11:00 No it doesn't mean sugar addiction. The entire MV is based on their parallel story called BU aka BTS Universe. In the story Jhope's mom abandoned him at a carnival when he was just a young child. The only thing she left by his side was a bar of snickers chocolate. That became his trauma in his later life as he grew up. If you notice in the MV, the room Jhope is in a room filled with objects from a carnival and he is laying on a bed of snickers. They are references to his past trauma of abandonment. This basically shows every member's trauma according to the BU storyline.

BTS will never use CGI where they can get the effect they want with practical sets, camera angles, and mechanics. As you saw in the making video, the guys will also do the action themselves with appropriate safeguards in place to protect them. This MV is a little bit on the more extreme side in terms of the sheer number of effects requiring additional oversight, but they've done explosions a number of times, set at least one room on (controlled) fire, and dropped a car once, just to name a few. Their MV for IDOL, by contrast, is extremely heavy on very obvious CGI, but they did that as a statement.

They actually have a more detailed mv making usually on the DVDs they release called memories. The explosion scene is there and shows that Jin is indeed in between it when it explodes. It is paid content though so not so much is posted in YT. The video you watched is part of the free contents they release here so we'd see some parts that they do not show on the dvd. You’d also see the behind set for the water effects on Jimin where the staff were cleaning up the remaining water on the set 😂

This MV is part of a whole storyline that’s why at the beggining is confusing but when you understand is mindblowing i promiseee. Blood Sweat and Tears is my fav one i hope you can react to it soon!🥰

One of my favorite moments in this MV is when the water begins to pour out around Jimin--his shirt actually flutters from the force of that rush of water. Also, the sound design is also brilliant. And again--thanks for shouting out to the crew and everybody who works behind the scenes!

Fake Love is pure Art from the MV to the lyrics to the choreography. One of BTS best. 👌👏

4:26 It’s quite interesting how you interpreted the scenery as a dream. And after watching from that point of view I think it fits really well given the fact that the "fake love“ that they‘re giving and receiving seems surreal for them.

Snikers bar(in Jhope scene) : Based on the BU, Jhope's mom left him in the amusement park with the snikers bar in his hand when he was a child and never came back. So it represents his trauma about 'fake love'. Water and fire scenes are also related to each character's trauma in the fictional storyline.

So thr part with Jin tha you want to see is only available on their BTS Memories DVD. Jin makes a point to say how important his face is but how everyone is wearing goggles and also notes how the camera is wrapped up while hes just going to be stanifn there. He tried hard not to flinch, which he didn't because trying to get another take...I honestly don't know if that was possible.

Yes them, the staff, the camera work the editing, they are all just damn amazing.

This made me smile - I love seeing how passionate you are about the amazing work BTS and their team does! Definitely time to jump into the BU - I would love to see you react to MVs like Run and I Need You and even some of the other trailers and footage that were all made so well on a very limited budget. And I think you would really enjoy the whole BU storyline and its moodier thematic elements. Seriously can't wait for you to see the Wings trailer and shortfilms. Your brain may explode, ROFL!

There is a more detailed behind the scenes on a DVD called BTS memories (for 2018). Jin said there, that they used paper sheets and dust for the explosion part.

I really like that you explain to us what the crew does and how difficult and amazing that is. Ofcourse we are focussed on the guys but without that amazing team around them they couldn't do what they do now.

Jeff… As I always say, “Pause away”, I would rather hear your thoughts at the time then you listen to the whole thing forget what you’re going to say. When you said, “this feels like a dream, or maybe a nightmare”, I laughed out loud. But I know exactly what you were saying. There is also an explanation to this MV, which is really very good. Example, the candy bars of JHope is laying on has something to do with his childhood, which I will not tell you. Looking forward to your next reaction on BTS.💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Basically, they used CGI and hyper-saturated color correction, in order to make the special effects look much bigger and feel simultaneously more extreme and more fantasy/dream-like. The water was there, but the stream of water was smaller, so it wasn't as dangerous as it looks ok the music video. Then they make it huge, and change it's tone from transparent to bright cyan in post production. The fire is there, but it's smaller (because it's dangerous), they make the explosion look even bigger (therefore, almost reaching Suga's body) in post production. The shot with Jin, that one looked pretty much the same before and post production... I think they used mostly paper, in that way the material around Jin wouldn't be too hard or too heavy. Still, pretty scary. There was more behind the scenes footage of this in some DVD... Not a lot more though. From what I remember, the phone desintegrating from V's hand and the shadow of the sand becoming like flying crumbles from Jungkook's hand... Those two details are CGI. The huge warehouse set painted on pastel colors, they re-used that place in Idol MV (or another MV). The stunts in which you jump and fall or are falling from the sky (in an harness that you erase later)... That type of scenes usually Jungkook does that... It's uncomfortable to do, but he is athletic and kinda into adrenaline inducing activities. (He has done that on live performances and on concerts too.) No matter how much I try, I can not remember if that river wall was real or not...

This was such a great, honest and relatable reaction, Jeff. I think on first watch most of us who are unaware of the BU storyline are amazed, mind blown and full of questions by the end of the Fake Love MV. Western music videos haven't had this epic scale production and storytelling for a long time, and this has an awesome song and choreography on top of all the other visuals. I think former BigHit CEO BangPD's degree and his focus on BTS's aesthetics have been fundamental in their development as artists, like Suga mentioned, Kpop is integrated content and the visual aspect is considered along with the music and dance performance as a vital part of their art.

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned it - the phones in V’s segment are flashing ‘I’m Fine’, which is the hidden message in the ‘Save Me’ ambigram graphic (you have to rotate it 180 degrees to see). ‘I’m Fine’ is also the pair/mirror song to the song ‘Save Me’ that you’ve already reacted to. The failed phone call itself refers back to the beginning of his BU storyline.

I'm so used to Jeff pausing now, I can actually get a fair indication of whether or not he liked something based on the length of each reaction video! Also, don't worry about pausing because what you have to say is interesting

Watching his reaction suddenly reminds me of something. we don't necessarily see things behind a song when we hear it. though it's an art form, but most of the time songs are just entertainments. but with BTS's songs, i always feel like i understand the song writers and the music creators, the idea of the song. like why they made the song, and why they made it this way. im not saying my understanding is completely correct cuz art no one precise answer, but an idea then you can make your own interpretation. it's really an art cuz it provide a communication between the creator and the viewer. most songs made really vague almost like chitchat, you don't even care who you talking with, you don't see the person or understand a person by chitchat. but BTS's songs, there are real words inside the songs. but im not bashing those casual songs, cuz i like those as well lol it's not a hard requirement to put yourself in your art. but im just saying i really feel like im communicating with the songs' creator through their songs and it's pretty special.

Hi Jeff! So there's another reactor, that just got into BTS, that I believe you two have the same or similar profession and he gave some insight on how they might have shot Jin's scene! Basically he said that they used air compressor cannons and stuffed them with a bunch of pieces of paper and sand and also pointed that the windows don't have any glass so it's not as dangerous as it seems. Taylor - your Intro video was reacted to by the channel "Jared and Jordan" yesterday, it's a particularly good reaction from 2 great guys! Go and watch it if you haven't seen it yet 😊 There have been quite a few channels who have reacted to your Intro video, they all really like it. The channels "Romeo no Juliet Tv" and " ALovelyPenguin" recently reacted to it. I always recommend your video for new reactors. Based on watching their reactions, I think it's safe to say that it's really not necessary to add the "main/lead" titles, there's already a lot of info for newbies to take in and adding the main/lead stuff will just distract and confuse them in my opinion. They'll most likely end up disregarding and casting aside that info in the end anyway, they won't retain it. Also, based on their reactions, I think it's a good idea to keep in that clip of BTS handing out flyers on the street and asking people to come to their concert. Even though it wasn't necessary for them to do that, it's good to show the contrast to where they are now and show where they started from. Cause a lot of people don't realize they really did start from the bottom. That clip also shows their humility, what they were willing to do to get their name out there, and how far they have come.

Jeff, this MV is what solidified my fandom, so I totally get it!! 😅 I am giddy excited to hear your thoughts on the BU short films, prologue, etc.

so glad u reacted to this one! i still vividly remember watching this mv when it first came out - it was especially moving because they took key visual symbols from their fictional storyline and created beautiful unique dream-like sequences for each. some of them mention it in the behind the scenes, like suga joking that he and fire can't be separated: previously he ends up in a scene of a burning room a few times- and in fake love, it seems as though he's hearing his character's past like a nightmare from another room. or like j-hope amongst the sea of snickers bars - he doesn't say it in the behind the scenes, but that particular candy bar is used because of his fictional storyline in their universe too (wings short film 'mama' for quick reference haha). their director tends to use these really well but i always thought it was particularly effective in this mv. it's always really cool to realize all the connections while watching. they rly go the extra mile to include this stuff in a /if you know you know/ kind of way while keeping it very functional as a stand-alone intriguing experience for a commercial audience o-o i think you really might like the non-music video kind of cinematic interlude videos they have made, like the hyyh prologue, wings short films, or highlight reels (personal favorite). especially if you have a preference for perhaps darker themes, they're a great watch. and the soundtracks are also great even if they're not strictly music videos. anyway, love the reactions!! glad you were able to see them perform live too :D

'I have more questions....', and that's exactly how I found myself deep into the BU and mind blown by the Big Hit team and the merging of artist, music and media to tell a story with just enough easter eggs to keep you craving more . Respect 🙌

Yeah the shooting sketches definitely are more focused on the members. Like look how much fun they’re having and goofing around with each other. And look how hard they’re working. Someone should definitely put together a book with the production of each of the music videos. There’s a lot that goes into each of them.

The teasers (esp. the 1st one) for the Fake Love MV, I think it's also done very well. Imagine we were all going into it cold back in 2018, the eerily anticipating sense it gave the audience, the emotional build up to the MV drop into BU story line... Connection and foreshadowing the Magic Shop concept... I think some of the MV teasers can really be put into part of the reaction "arc," especially it appears we are going into this BU dive. Especially Jeff's professional perception and interests from a production storyteller viewpoint, seeing how everything tied together to the level of a intricately crafted teaser, nothing is without purpose and meaning. All emotions were wrung out from the viewers. The angst!

Oh, wait until you get to the Wings short films. What amazes me is the creative team behind and with BTS. This is a team that has worked hard to make the best quality they possibly can even from their days having a limited budget. I appreciate your videos for appreciating their skills. AND! Soon we will have another MV (plural?) from this team. I absolutely cannot wait. Also, I can never get tire of Fake Love, so love all the replays. One of my favorite reactors, Cedric Gegel, who comes from the similar background to you, believes the scene with the windows imploding and debris flying is created without any explosion.

P.S. I have heard that the scene you were obsessed with was almost all paper debris. But I haven't seen confirmation of that. I would imagine that they trained Jin to close his eyes and avoid any dust etc.

for Jin's scene(windows), i believe there were no windows. they just had bits of paper and whatever else like that with high pressure, pushing it through in a burst.

The background status and their hands movements covering mouth, eyes and ears symbolize "see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil."

Somehow it's jeff branding now, my friend was asked me yesterday "did you watch that reactor that paused a lot? He got the LV ticket" i was like oh jeff hahahahaha

I think after watching BTS MVs, Jeff needs to watch videos regarding the BTS Universe storyline ..

I think the part where the room explodes around Jin is just a visual trick. He's in a blind spot where the explosion won't hit him, and it's a tight spot. So things will explode behind him and in front of him but he is in a safe spot in between.

The sculpture is depicting the "see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil" hands which is also incoporated in the choreography

I kind of love that you got the experience that Army does which is you leave with more questions for each viewing and shooting sketch and extended version. And yes the idea of tying a huge multi year multi album story line together is great!

Actually I want to mention something Jeff. In the MV behind V, you can see there’s an anagram ‘Save me’ which if flipped turns into ‘I’m Fine’.They are sister songs, their melody is mirrored and lyrics are also related/ reversed or something….
