It's Beauty and The Beast in reverse. The Beast is the talented, deep-minded artist, the beauty is the self-absorbed narcissist. She doesn't realize her boyfriend is Gaston until it's too late and the truly rare and beautiful thing is forced to run away. Poetically, he continues to create his beautiful topairies and ice sculptures forever, her beauty eventually fades with time... (It is also the the precursor to "Shape of Water" which was Creature from the Black Lagoon as a love story, this one is Frankenstein)

The relationship between Edward and Kim progressed naturally I think. At first she had the stereotypical Alpha male boyfriend, and didn't understand this strange new creature living with her family. Slowly but surely Kim develops empathy for him, that eventually turns into genuine love. It's like how kids are in their youth preferring to be part of the known, of the crowd, rather than to challenge conformity. You can see that this neighbourhood is all about conformity among the adults as well. Which is one of the points the movie tries to make. That the resistance to variety and differences are what makes people into monsters, rather than their outward appearance. Kim realizes too late how precious Edward is, and how she should have protected him from the start. She's not that bad, when you think how she protested whenever the gang did something to hurt Edward. It was unfortunate that she didn't have the bravery to do the right thing from the get-go. However this is a modern fairy-tale or a fable, and if everything went well and everyone was nice there would be no story, and no lessons to learn either.

She directly caused 1 thing. Her silence caused at most 2 issues. The other main issues were cause directly by the jealous bully framing things badly and the one woman accusing him of sexual assault because he "Rejected" her (he was more frightened of the feelings than rejecting her}. A love letter to the craft, the realities of the budgetary limitations of B-movies, and a glorious example of quirky personalities finding eachother and working together to make, well... sometimes they just end up making crap. I love how that parental instinct started bubbling up the more of Edward you saw. I think that's the general reaction a lot of people have; they see something beautiful and sincere in the character that they want to protect and cherish, to see brought to its full potential, and watching all these vacuous suburbanites immediately trying to take advantage of him can be really enraging and disgusting, but that's kind of the point. It's one of my favorite movies to watch, even though I must have seen it at least half a dozen times.

*raises eyebrow* You expect a young teenage girl to confront her violently aggressive boyfriend by escalating the situations to physical altercations? That does not end well for her. She does stand up to him eventually; she just has to grow as a person first. I definitely disagree with your thoughts that she's at fault for most of what happens. The fault is with everyone in that community who saw someone vulnerable and different and wanted to take advantage of him. She at least started to become a better person and tried to be there for him emotionally and have sympathy for him. As for explaining things to everyone at the end, you're talking about trying to talk down a mob, which is nigh on impossible. I dunno. I've always liked her quite a bit and really loved the connection between her and Edward.

Yes, it's basically an inversion of the original Frankenstein story: rather than being abandoned by his creator, the monster accidentally kills him. Rather than horrifying the public, the monster is celebrated; it's not until the novelty wears off that the people turn on him. It's almost like a pre-social media version of the milkshake duck phenomenon or cancel culture, where people can be convinced to join an angry mob at the drop of a hat, even against something they once loved.

I can see autism, Edward is certainly functioning on a different mental, emotional and social plain as everyone else in the town. He's a person who doesn't belong, can't function in normal society, feels used for his talents, every relationship he has ends up destroyed. If you've ever seen that clip of Burton getting walked in on by John Lasseter and Randy Cartwright at Disney, he behaves exactly like Edward, deer in headlights just doesn't know what to do.

When I saw this in the theater, I laughed really loud when the boyfriend started talking about the setup his dad has. Big screen tv, CD player, VHS with four heads. High end stuff for 1990 but up until this time, it appears the movie is set in the '70's. Not many got the joke in the theater and I think it's probably lost on people today if you aren't sure of the time setting.

Bo Welch went above and beyond with the set design on this one. Won a BAFTA. Took over a newly developed neighborhood, moved all of the residents to hotels so he could altar absolutely everything to fit what/how Edward sees. From the size of the windows, to ripping out every last piece of vegetation in the neighborhood (replacing it all with artificial grass and the huge chicken wire topiaries). When Peg sees Edward’s castle for the first time in the car mirror, what she sees is actually a small study model propped up on a C-stand.

One thing I don't think is appreciated enough about this movie (especially as the years pass) is how influential Danny Elfman's music score was to entertainment in general. I seem to remember people *really* being taken by Elfman's style when this movie came out - in particular, all the "ooh" and "ahhs" of the children's choir. Since then, nearly every single movie, show or video game that's been even remotely fantasy-themed has emulated that (There have even been a couple cases of outright musical plagiarism.) I feel like if it weren't for Elfman - and this movie in particular - that the whole "oohs" and "ahhs" thing wouldn't have become as synonymous with fantasy in pop culture.

Yeah, that was a little bit of a drag, honestly. I think he underestimated Kim’s lack of power with Jim. You can’t just “sock him in the jaw and get out of the van”. If she had tried to hit him, he would have beat her half to death without question. When you have an aggressive, stubborn, inconsiderate jerk for a boyfriend, you truly “can’t make him do anything”. That man does what he wants and will barrel over anyone to do it. This vid got a dislike from me, it was such a bad take.
@eleven-hopper

Regardless of her being "under the influence" of someone else, it doesn't excuse her behaviour. I'm more surprised y'all are so easy to forgive her actions. She tries to redeem herself at the end for sure but for most of the movie she's toxic towards Edward and caused him a lot of hardships.

I often wonder when it comes to this movie. How it all what’ve went down if she ran when she first saw him. And he went to grab her because he was afraid of being alone. And how badly it could’ve gone. Which would’ve probably have turned it into a horror movie. But Tim really wanted us to see how those who are different or dark are often the most misunderstood and have great love in their hearts.

The inventor of Edward is played by Vincent Price he was in a multitude of movies during the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s and narrated Tim Burton's first-ever film. Even if you don't recognize his appearance you probably know his voice from Michael Jackson's THRILLER, this was his last movie.

If you want to see some prime Vincent Price (the inventor), you should check out The Tingler. It’s delightfully cheesy, but also kind of brilliant. When it came out, theaters would be rigged up with stuff to gently shock people sitting in certain seats and stuff. Also, he was great in Laura, for a less old, horror movie Vincent Price.
