One of my favorite things about this trailer is that the WoL changes through his classes in the order of the previous cinematics

There were three big things in this trailer that made all the players freak out. 1) "Master Matoya." 2) The Crystal Tower. 3) "Minphilia." Keep these in mind as you play!

Yeah, you're right, it's the only MMO that focuses on the story and the journey to max level rather than trying to skip the leveling process like nearly every MMO does now. Play FFXIV if you want to enjoy a story of a single player game while being able to play with your friends.

The banners represent the latest fight/war that happened right before Shadowbringers starts. The first bundle of flags is the Eorzean Alliance, and it represents all the factions on that side (which are the "good guys"), and then the gray flag by itself is the enemy, the Garleans. The dude in the huge armor you face off against is the First Prince of the Garleans. He was the main opponent in Stormblood (the expansion right before Shadowbringers) The gunblade guy is indeed in the game. He's an NPC that has been assisting you since the beginning of the game (as well as Mr. tarot cards and Ms. Ahri lookalike) He wasn't using a gunblade at first, but he switched to that class for this Expansion, because said expansion added a playable class that is using a gunblade. (And the rabbit girl is a Viera. And yes, same race as Fran from FF12

He had the perfect reaction that we all had when we saw it first time, *points at screen* "G-gundblade!"

"One brings shadow, one brings light Two-toned echoes tumbling through time Threescore wasted, ten cast aside Four-fold knowing, no end in sight One brings shadow, one brings light One dark future no one survives On their shadows, away we fly" The lyrics to this song still bring me chills even after 2 years. First hearing the music and seeing this trailer, I was like "wow this is pretty cool." But after playing through Shadowbringers, it hits just so much harder with the knowledge of the story. I know it's been said so many times that it's almost a meme at this point, but FFXIV Shadowbringers is hands down one of the best FF stories in recent decades.

This trailer gives me chills every single time. One of the best Cinematics out there. Also, when that Eternal wind kicks in, NGL I get a teary eye.

The gun blade character who you liked so much is named “Thancred” you saw a younger version of him in Flames of Truth, he was one of the people kneeling praying to help the old man fight Bahamut!

Something pretty interesting about the song that's playing in the background is that it's essentially a breakdown of the story of Shadowbringers. If you haven't played Shadowbringers yet, it just sounds like a typical Final Fantasy song with lyrics that might not make sense. But once you've played through the campaign, you realize those lyrics are a summary of the game's events. Also, heads-up, there is a trailer for Endwalker, but it's NOT the full version yet. The full version of the Endwalker trailer probably won't be out until May. The one we have now is a teaser that only reveals part of the new stuff coming to the game. If you want to react to the Endwalker trailer, I would wait until we get the full version later this year.

The musical transition in the crystal tower shot is my favourite bit

Hold off watching the Endwalker trailer, only the Teaser trailer is out at the moment, the full trailer will be out in May after the digital Fan festival

The creature that's like a gremlin is in fact a gremlin, they have a ability where they insult you and it gives you a debuff called "Misery" that can be removed if a party member uses a /comfort emote on you

As someone who also made an analysis of this trailer, it's a pleasure to see the true professionals like Chris to show their knowledge, it was very inspiring and instructive to watch this video. Brillant as usual 👍

As a huge fan of Shadowbringers, I would like to bring a couple of things to your attention that I think will completely change your view and amplify your appreciation of this trailer: The overall theme of Shadowbringers covers the abstract belief of there being a "good" and an "evil" side. Shadowbringers challenges that time-honored tradition, and instead shows us two opposing sides, rather than a hero and a villain. One such quote in the game itself sums it up perfectly: "We were blind to the truth once, so I tell you this, as one fool to another: Light, Dark it doesn't matter. What matters is how you choose to use them. We made our choice and you see what came of it so please... forge a different path, seize a better fate." The importance of this is actually in the setting of this world: You are working to save a world from a Flood of Light. The balance of the world was tipped, and Light drowned out darkness. These saintly beings, known as Sin Eaters, turn people into grotesque purified nightmares, and the world itself is on the brink of annihilation, because of a mistake made in trying too hard to dispel Darkness. That is why the setting is in a bright, almost washed-out landscape -because this world does not have nighttime. The significance of the sky itself splitting at the end is due to the fact that this world has been trapped in that cloud of heavy oppressive daytime for over 100 years. Entire generations have lived and died without ever knowing what night is. These both lend to the significance of the Warrior of Light contradicting traditional belief. Restoring Darkness, a power typically associated with evil, to a world drowning in Light, a power typically associated with good. And this entire mindset is conveyed throughout the entirety of Shadowbringers.

I've been a long time World of Warcraft player but when the dumpster fire that was BFA was current and then I saw this Shadowbringers trailer, that got me interested in playing 14. And I've been playing for a couple years now.

That reaction when you hear "Warrior of Darkness" is exactly what the entire community felt. The whole shadowbringers really shatter the stereotype of light = good, dark = bad. Kinda funny how for someone who didnt play the game, you really got most of the points right just by watching. "What is she? Infuse by the light or something", you literally caught on real fast Also the bunny race is a canon race within the lore, vieras were first introduce in the "Ivalice" series, which is basically a neighboring continent in FFXIV and also the place that FF12 took place in, so it's not surprise to see them wandering around now.

The bunny girl from FFXII is Fran. She's also in FFXIV. In fact, the level 70 alliance raids are all about Ivalice with many returning characters from FFXII

Your initial reaction to this trailer accurately reflects the community's reaction when they first saw it. The next expansion cinematic teaser has come out, which you could react to, or wait for the full trailer (probably early may), and react with the rest of the community! P.S. Fran is from FFXII and is the bunny you were thinking of. The bunny species (Viera) are one of the new playable races that was introduced in this expansion.

Best story ever told in MMORPG history. Even voted as the best Final Fantasy by the fans. Some even goes as far as claiming it's one of the best RPG in general. The story makes you laugh, worry, cry, hype, and everything else in between. Personally for me, I've thought the story was written by the Gods. It is that good.

When the hooded guy with crystal hand says "Calamity even greater than 7th umbral calamity", the 7th umbral calamity is the formal name of when dragon Bahamut wrought great amounts of destruction in Flames of Truth cinematic.

Chris, I'm so happy you acknowledged when we said it *is* story focused. Dude, you really should give this game a shot. This trailer stands on it's own and is really cool, but it means SO. MUCH. MORE. when you come at it after getting a character through the lv.70 story.

Oh so you want to hold the line with Ysthola? (The cat lady) sorry to say she is pretty savage to most guys tring to flirt with her XD Also the switching of the gear is a nice nod towards the job system that allows you to freely change you class whenever you want (you can basicaly level up all classes with one charackter)

The Shadowbringers Cinematic is just 10/10. Extremely nice!

Best FFXIV trailer to date! And the music that sounds in the scenes with the Viera and the Crystal Tower is a new version of "Eternal Wind" from FFIII, very beautiful!

Fun Fact: The Dark Knight (the class the WoL becomes at the end to defeat the angel) is based on a combo of Guts from Berserk and the main character from Dark Souls! When the author/creator for Berserk passed a couple months back, everyone who had the class were lining the streets in the major cities in their Dark Knight gear and standing by their campfires to pay him tribute since his work was a heavy influence for the class!!

"what's up with your eyes" The subtle point is that the music says "You are the light" as it zooms on her. And obviously context of the story is kinda needed here a bit.

an amazing thing about this trailer is it all happens between levels 70 and 71. there it barely scratches what Shadowbringers actually has in store. and yeah FFXIV pays homage to all the Final Fantasy's of the past, even the bunnygirl "viera" race from 12, the Taru form 11, the Crystal tower from 3, music remixes from various titles, questlines that directly refer to other games while still being part of 14's actual world in a way that makes perfect sense. it is very well done.

Now they have a new trailer Endwalker, but I'd wait till the full release of the trailer. SE likes to tease and release partial trailers only showing the full trailer when the expansion is close to dropping.

I played Shadowbringers this past summer and it lives in my head rent-free. It was also when I really connected with the Scions and saw them as my close comrades and friends. And Emet-Selch, wow, what a character! I loved Endwalker A LOT, but Shadowbringers is my Roman Empire. I think about it all the time.

I am to excited for this. Edited because im still excited after watching and that ending still gives me chills to this day.

It's almost been years and this trailer never fails to give me chills. The build up, everything, all the way to that triumphant ending and tone. 10/10

The look on your face when Thancred did his full-fist reload is the same reaction I had. I laughed because I understood.

The Elf with the cards is Urianger Augurelt, an Archon of the Circle of Knowing from the northern land of Sharlayan. Urianger often speaks in poetry and riddles. He is well-versed in the prophecy pointing to the Seventh Umbral Era, and recites a verse at nearly every encounter. Though his appearance and mannerisms are intimidating, he is a virtuous character. Although he often tries to hide it behind a serious facade, he is close to fellow Scion Moenbryda, having known her since childhood. Though secretive, Urianger is loyal to his fellow Scions and his teacher, Louisoix Leveilleur. Louisoix was the old man in the first cinematic that teleports everyone away, and then fights Bahamut.

Man it's crazy seeing how much is in here not just for fans of the game, but fans of final fantasy as a whole, to the point that he had a decent amount of context for the trailer despite never having played 14. The banners aren't exactly symbolizing all of the previous fights, it's the two armies that are fighting in the trailer, the alliance of eorzea, with all the in game factions on the left, and garlemalde, the invading army on the right. Something really cool about the trailer is that the area at the very beginning is actually a dungeon in game; the Ghimlyt Dark, which is the front line of the war. Fun Fact: It's called the Ghimlyt Dark because there's so much smoke and ash in the sky that it blocks out the sun, it's always just as dark as depicted in the trailer. Wow, It never occurred to me but he's totally right, WoL straight up pulled an Excalibur Morgan at the end of the trailer didn't he?

the 2 different types of musical scores in the trailer really contrasted well and complimented eachother perfectly. Fine craftsmanship.

How long have I waited for this moment! About as long as I've known about this channel, actually! Thank you for finally reacting to this awesome trailer! My favourite game trailer of all time, right up there with the Witcher 3's everything.

Spoilers for FF14 Shadowbringers, but not much because I don't want to explain too much. The dude in the tower is the one who is speaking for the trailer, because he is trying to reach the Warrior of Light to prevent a tragedy from happening. The goal of ShB is basically to bring back the darkness, to return balance to his world - hence why you are becoming the Warrior of Darkness in this expansion (rather than the Warrior of Light). The class for this expansion is the Dark Knight - cause. Darkness. You know. The writer for the Dark Knight job quests also was on the team for this expansion, so it's actually one of the best expansions to date, highly loved by everyone. I've heard very few complaints, aside from minor problems. The biggest shame for the trailer is that you don't see the main villain for Shadowbringers, who is a big favourite for a lot of fans too. He's a very charismatic villain :')

Chris, you should check out Alex Moukala Music and his videos reacting to the music in these trailers. The FFXIV composer Sokken recently spoke with him on a video interview after he and Husky did their version of the next expansion's boss music based on the teaser trailer and Sokken noted how insightful Alex's analysis is and that he actually catches a lot of subtle things Sokken was intending to convey like the slight key change at the end of this conveying hope at the end. All the characters are the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, an organization you're a part of and they have been growing alongside you and part of your story since the first expansion, A Realm Reborn. They've become larger and larger importance alongside you rather than sort of side characters to guide you along. The one with the gunblade is Thancred. He's gone from a rogue to a gunbreaker. Also, the bunny girl, the viera, Fran is the one from XII. She is also IN FFXIV! Not just one of her species, but her exact outfit and the name is Fran. It's not the same Fran from XII, but it's the same name/look and it's during the "Ivalice" raids, which is the world of Final Fantasy Tactics & XII, but in FFXIV it's a country. And as others have said, wait til May for the full Endwalker trailer. They release half as the teaser and we get the full trailer later at Fan Fest (which is digital in May this year).

We are here almost touching Endwalker with our hands but the last part of the Shadowbringers trailer still has something that touches my soul. What an amazing trailer.

Fun fact: In this Add On the darkness isn't something bad. It's quite the opposite because the story brings you into another world flooded with light. So the whole "light = good, dark = bad" ist swapped :)

I have to say, it's so good to finally have it put into words the reasons I feel the way I feel when watching these trailers. I've always said that when the visual and the music/audio go together hand in hand so well, there's just something so emotional about it.

The cinematics always get me hyped up especially with the addition of Soken's musical composition. (Endwalker, anyone?) I still remember watching reactions to this as it was coming out. So many emotions since a lot of it gave some reassurance after what happened with story until that point. Oof, still getting goosebumps! X3

Sick video dude! Fun fact about the Gunblade - The class is called Gunbreaker, a tank who's origins track back to an elite group of warriors charged with protecting their queen. The SFX of the blade are EXACTLY what you hear playing the class in game. Also the opening battlefield is called the Ghimlyt Dark which is a dungeon you play in at the end of Stormblood and transitions you into Shadowbringers. The thing in the background before the sword/title drop is actually a downed airship and the blue stuff is the volatile fuel called Cerulium. Another fun fact is in FFXIV 1.0 trailer our baby Warrior of Light actually starts as an archer! He finally got back to his starting class! Not an uncommon thing to do when you run out of content is go to back and level another class. You can be all the different classes on a single character. The Gremlin (yeah actually IS a gremlin) often mimic speech to pull in their prey. SPOILERS . . . . . Gremlin says the lines someone else critical to the story says towards the conclusion of the Main Storyline. If I hadn't played it recently I would have missed it.

The class at the end there is Dark Knight it was actually introduced in the first expansion, but didn't feature in the trailer so with the story of Shadowbringers and the whole become the warrior of darkness, they gave it the spotlight.

Ahh, I've been waiting for you to do this one and it didn't disappoint. :D Not only is that my favorite trailer but Shadowbringers is also my favorite story.....ever. Not just for a mmo but any game period.

It took me a few watches before I finally made sense of it, but he cuts off the Sin Eater's (the "angel") arm on the change to Dark Knight, and then the second attack that throws it back takes out its legs, before then going for the finishing blow.

All the hero characters seen in the trailer, as well as the villain with the broken mask and third eye, appear in the game, quite extensively; most all of them as far back as A Realm Reborn, and even 1.0. This is the first time we've seen them rendered in an FMV since the ARR trailer, as they're among those seen praying in that trailer's final moments. The dancer seen with the chakrams is indeed a Viera, like Fran from FF12; they're a playable race since Shadowbringers' release. This trailer is how audiences were first informed that the Dancer class was being introduced to the game, much like how Samurai was unveiled in the Stormblood trailer - first-time viewers had no idea either were definite upcoming expansion inclusions until they were seen in their respective trailers.

Shadowbringers takes place on a planet that is like an alternate world to the planet we start on, the "Umbral Calamities" that occur basically shattered the world we start on into copies, but with strong elemental properties like Light, Shadow, Fire, etc. The First's elemental property is Light, but something happened and there was too much Light, and it began flooding the First and corrupting everything. The city where that person is shown eating is Eulmore, where the residents live in live decadent lives, while everyone else below barely eats, and are basically living in squalor.

Tbe transitions in this trailer is something else. I love it!

What's impressive of this trailer is that it changes meaning depending on how much you know of the story. Within background knowledge you can of course enjoy it. Cinematographically speaking it's amazing. But if you know a little of the characters you get hyped for seeing them. Particularly Minfilia. But if you are caught up on the story up to that point then you know what happened to them and wonder how things got to that point. But then the whole story reveals itself once you have finished the story and you can truly appreciate all the nods and details that are in this.

This is my favorite trailer. I get chills every single time I hear "Become the Warrior of Darkness."

Context: Scene 1: During a battle between the Eorzean Alliance (the good guys) and the Garlean Empire (evil big tech empire). That fight is actually the final questline of the Stormblood expansion where you have a 1v1 duel with Zenos Yae Galvus (a pure evil sadistic prince of said empire) who is possessed by the Ascian (the mysterious evil powerful wizards who work behind the shadows) Elidibius. Scene 2: The Warrior of Light has an ability to relive the past of others when the plot demands it. Here it's on himself while he's reflecting the journey he's been through and run down by. Juxtaposed by his rugged appearance in his set from the 1.0 trailer where he was a fresh faced youth. The angel is a Sin Eater which is a malicious light creature (he's in a new world called Norvrant that is being consumed by the light role reversal style). Scene 3: The elf is Urianger and the catgirl is Ysh'tola. Wise scholar figure and powerful sorceress respectively. Who were brought into this new world by mistake, by the crystal armed guy, and are fighting the forces of the aristocratic city. Scene 4: Thancred (White haired guy who was also dragged into that world) is safe guarding a child that is the vessel/reincarnation of his long lost friend Minifilia (who went to this world to spot the light consuming it). The lion statue is also a sin eater who are the dominant military force in Eulmore (horrifying aristocratic city that's in league with the sin eaters). He's also a Gunbreaker (one of the two new classes in that expansion). Scene 5: The bunny woman is a Viera (yes like in XII) and is the other new class called Dancer. That city is The Crystarium (the last beacon of hope in a dying world) run by The Crystal Exarch (crystal guy who is narrating). And your role in this story is to restore the night in a world that has had nothing but eternal light for a century. Finally the Warrior of Light's classes in order: Archer, Warrior, Dragoon, Monk, Samurai, and finally Dark Knight.

im surprised the opulent rich cat people shot that turned into the pan down to the scene introducing the GUNBLADE didnt get a mention, since it implies that those events are occurring in the same space (only many levels difference) and the juxtaposition of the decadent and lazy wealthy characters with the frenzied running of the other two is really cool! its a "beautiful skin but rotton insides" kind of set up that sparks curiosity about whats going on in that place, Shadowbringers uses descending from one place to another a few times in ways that are so subtle and artful that in the moment is easy to miss because it sucks you down (punintended) into the story

The banners are the different factions in the war. The first set is the Eorzean Alliance and the single banner ( White one at the end ) is the Garlean banner of the Empire. Alliance being the good guys and the Empire the big baddies for the most part. So the cinematic is shifting focus that the Empire is no longer the enemy and that's what you see after the ian slashes.

one thing i liked is with shadowbringers everything basically comes full circle. as a 1.0 player a looming calamity was always there. It just was not going to be the fall of dalamud, you pretty much started the story experiencing an echo and see the build up to present day 1.0 where garleans were planning to further their expansion after the failed silver tears battle. also Arbert and his crew were modeled after the promo characters you see in the og 1.0 into, and the end of an era cinematic. the barkeep in the crystarium is modeled after the roe who gives the promo and you can see clips of the OG 1q,0 cinematic in the shadowbringers cinematic.
