Insidious is one of the few films that really needs to be seen back to back with its sequel; they dovetail into one another and tell a story that wholly intertwines the two of them to the point where they're two parts to a single, almost 4 hour story.

Insidious was pretty much my first real horror movie that I went to watch in the theater, I was a big scaredy cat. When the credits were rolling I got the creeping feeling that the music was getting louder as I walked out of the theater, I got a real sense that something stuck with me after I left. I watched a lot of classic horror movies afterward and just none of them had the teeth that this movie does. This is one of the few movies that truly got me to my bones.

Whoever's idea it was to put the 'scare' out of focus behind the father was brilliant. The tension is amped, your eyes are immediately drawn to the first thing in the scene which is Josh, and then the music and the hiss and the jump scare and EVERYONE nearly shits themselves. It's not one of my favorite horror series, but this is one of my favorite jump scares. Right up there with the lawn mower in Sinister ( which is, imho, the best ).

This is exactly what I love to see in horror films. No matter how cheesy some elements came out to be, the fact that they did it to try and showcase how unnatural these things are and try to make it feel powerful was fantastic. It really helps build up the demon and the world of astral projection.

And it's SO GOOD
@DP-um1ck
@DP-um1ck Год назад
Omg! You did it! You watched it! :D thanks man! I was looking for to this! First of all: kudos! You caught the hidden gems and nuggets! (Like the kid ghost hiding near the coat rack. Most people miss that) Secondly, my experience? I appreciated the slow build. Where you don't immediately get full on ghosts or demons, but sounds. thumping, walking, tapping. And it builds up and gets gradually worse. I also liked it was the son, Dalton, and not the house that got haunted. Because that led into this whole different world with extra lore behind it. And I like how they added to these hauntings with slight winks to paranormal investigators. The whole gass mask thing during the seance really appealed to my imagination. When I first watched it, back in the day, I was impressed with something that seems trivial now: hauntings happening during daylight/daytime. Because the stereotypical thing is that it only happens at night. Here the "Tiny Tim"-song really took on a life of its own. And, arguably, the Old Lady spirit is scarier than the Darth Maul demon. Imo. There's just a lot of layers in it for a horror/thriller movie. Layers that even make it rewatchable to see if you missed anything :D (there's more details about my personal experience while watching it at the cinema and with friends at 3 AM at night. ;) but I won't bore you with that)

Directed by James wan the two have worked together multiple times to create masterpieces including the saw franchise which we see here in the scene where josh tells his wife he's working late, jigsaw can be seen in the chalk board behind him. Also Joseph Bashira scores the music for the movies and also plays the lipstick faced demon

this film is a good example of how to properly do jumpscares and not rely on them too much of course it still has the big sound/music cue playing most of the time but they are supported by the effective visuals not bashing on the film but Sinister is another modern horror film that tried and failed that kind of jumpscare tactic

What I love about James wan's horror films is that they are cinematic but they also feel like they're given the love and budget as current superhero movies. The amount of lore and world building in them has you looking at frames to find hidden scares the way superhero movies treat Easter eggs.

Haunting of Hill House is how true horror ought to be, imo. Ever had something utterly horrible happen to a loved one and you become acutely aware of the reality of the situation, and of the clear knowledge that this moment and all the ones following won't ever take the horrible thing away. That horror of the moment and how it refuses to stop being real. That's what HoHH pulled off, alongside creepy moments and sudden scary shots. Following stuff, especially Midnight Mass, was a complete fucking joke.
