Chris please, react to all cinematics of League of Legends and the League of Legends Stick figure spotlight animations(by Hyun's Dojo), these are so cool! :D
The fact that he doesn't realize he's saying Widowmaker's line "One Shot" but hes actually referring to the camera work was done in "one shot" is awesome
I would recommend watching them all, but if you want to pick out only some, please do "The Last Bastion", "Honor and Glory" and "Dragons". The best in my humble opionion (although they all are great). :)
Or....just do them all, they are really worth it. Here is the playlist from the official Overwatch channel: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FqnKB22pOC0.html
Everyone is suggesting "Honor and Glory" and "The Last Bastion" I suggest those, but definitely watch the Overwatch 2 cinematic. It's really good but you should save it for last.
I see a lot of recommendations but not a lot of explaining xD. The first video. You meet widowmaker (the sniper) she was married to a Overwatch agent. She was captured by a evil organization called Talon and tortured till she became a sleeper agent. Later after she was rescued by Overwatch, she murdered her husband and then escaped back to Talon to become one of there best assassins. I think you know of Tracer (time control girl) but her back story is that she was originally a pilot. She was piloting a experimental plane that was suppose to do what she can do now but it malfunction and she was diagnosed Chronal Disassociation. She was basically a ghost, she would phase out of existent and phase back in. Later her friend a Scientist (the mention him in the second video the "monkey") made her the machine that you see that she wares on her. It basically stabilize her and make her able to control her own time as you can see. The second video you can see but they have a background together . You meet Jessy McCree. He was basically was part of a gang called the Deadlock gang. He later got into a fight with a overwatch agent and he was offered a spot in overwatch's Black ops group and joined them. Ashe is now the current leader of the Deadlock gang. This is mostly basic info as i know of tracer and widowmaker than i do Jessy and Ashe but i hope this explain a bit more. Keep up the awesome work and my recommendation is like most of the commets - Dragons, The first trailer. Rise & shine (mostly to introduce the character there) and when you finished with them Overwatch 2 Trailer
I know I'm a bit late to the party but he coming at this a film maker and not as a player. So this means he is missing A SHIT TON of hidden jokes and references that a true fan a player would have. To be honest I like that part. It means he has not much invested knowing the characters and will judge it on just the cinematography. I hope once he seen them all he reads the comics, plays a bit then rewatches to see what he can pick up that he missed before.
I never got Tracer’s chronal accelerator. Like does she need to constantly be wearing it? Cuz that’s not what the comics show (see the Christmas one and the most recent Tracer comic where she just casually takes it off and hangs it as if it were a rain coat)
@@zachblair3794 Actually if you look at the charismas comic you will see the chronal accelerator in a machine that is explained basically making a bubble in her apartment that she can move around normally in. But if she has to go somewhere she does need to wear the harness to move around with out phasing in and out of reality
Indeed. Bastion isnt as much special effects as much as it is about how the story is told and the narrative aspect, maybe a bit different to the videos Chris usually comments on, but if he don't mind taking a look at a video from the storytelling aspect, the buildup, the hinting etc then I cannot recommend Last Bastion enough! *** Potential Spoilers!! *** Apparently it was highly praised by the army veterans organisations in how it explains how it is to live with PTSD from being under fire and in active combat..
Regarding the other Overwatch cinematics, they are: "Dragons", "Infiltration", "The Last Bastion", "Honor and Glory", "Hero", "Rise and Shine", "Recall" and "Shooting Star" (and the Announce Trailer) "The Last Bastion" as well as "Rise and Shine" are more atmospheric, the rest is more action driven. My overall favorite is "Dragons", "The Last Bastion" is a close second, but "Honor and Glory" and "Infiltration" are also very nice. Most characters from the cinematics reappear in "Zero Hour" (which is pretty sick by the way), the announcement trailer for Overwatch 2. Which is why this one is best to watch after the rest of them.
I’d love to see your take on all of these, they all have something cool and unique that you could go into more detail on how to do. Plus they’re all just really good!
like all these videos are worthy of recommendation, even the small character introductions that are just very limited animation and voice over are crafted to a T. Sigma's few minutes intro is honestly bone chilling to watch.
27:30 this is a visual effect called "chromatic aberration" in which the waves of light refracting through glass elements pass at slightly different angles and inhibit perfect focus on a subject, most often resulting in cyan/magenta/yellow "edges" on the subject in focus, or in layman's terms, "color fringing". Usually, the more expensive the optic - the better the quality of the glass - the less CA are present, with APO (Apo-chromatic) lenses essentially being aberration free, but uber expensive! It's very cool how they even simulated this effect in an animation! Leads me to believe Widowmaker's scope isn't of the "highest" quality though lol. Fringing quite badly!
i like how they change the explosion sound when the camera goes to the the robot, first u see the explosion then the sound comes. ^^ and in tzhe other one he gives the tip and later he says to ash "You’ve never been one to shy away from a good tip” and btw, the animation of the smoke from the cigar ... the details man xD that looks so real
Like a lot of others have said, Dragons as well as Honor and Glory are exquisite! Powerful story telling and stunning visuals! Please do these as a double feature next!
what i really love in those shorts are the animations. blizzard is one of the few game studios (even in the game) who really understands how to bring virtual "persons" to life with so many little things. the facial animation in the "banter" scene of mcree is on another level PS: "the last bastion" won a ton of awards and "honor and glory" and the overwatch 2 announcement trailer. "dragons" is awesome aswell
All I want is a Talon cinematic where Moira is included, the in game lines she shares with the other members are great and I would love to see it in an animation.
I really love your analysis of each short. I'm not a filmmaker, but I'm a writer, so I analyze things from the story and lore points (yay humanities degree haha). What's really interesting is seeing how they use the filmmaking aspects to solidify lore and character aspects, and in this case, game mechanics. In each short, the characters use their in-game abilities; such as Widowmaker with her poison mine, Tracer with her recall (traveling back in time) and teleport abilities, and McCree's flashbang grenades. The comedic effect in Reunion is even better when you understand the abilities. Ashe and McCree's Ultimates (most powerful moves that you have to take time to build up) are used in the short--Ashe actually does shout "B.O.B.! Do somethin'!" and send him out onto the field to shoot at the opposing team. With McCree, a tumbleweed ACTUALLY TUMBLES BY IN GAME, and his Ult line is "It's High Noon," which makes the clock ticking in the short all the more funny--he actually shoots aT HIGH NOON. Honestly, the Blizzard cinematic team is one of the best out there. I'm super excited to watch your other reacts to Overwatch shorts. May I suggest, also, before you watch the most recent trailer for Overwatch 2 ("Zero Hour"), you also watch the cinematics for the in-game story modes they had--Uprising, Retribution, and Storm Rising. These take place, timeline wise, before these shorts, and will help you understand more about the lore and characters that lead into Overwatch 2.
I love hearing the different analysis you bring for all of these different cinematics on the channel. It's really informative! I feel like i'm learning a lot about film-making from watching these.
no lie i was about to click out when i saw that you're just straight up watching the cinematics.. but i had faith and waited a bit, and finally got to the breakdown part. and it just excites me how you break every little thing down one at a time. how the orange and red contrasts the blue, how you mention the 180 rule (which i didn't understand at first but now i do thanks to you), how the mood differs in each area according to the color scheme used. in the 'alive' cinematic, when widowmaker, the assassin, slowly grapples down the side of the building, and how you said the camera work would be difficult irl, but since this is animated, it is possible. it made me appreciates the cinematic even more. my love for overwatch, and the little knowledge i have on animations, movie making, and the stuff alike, made me enjoy every moment of you blabbering, a lot more.. and i am glad to have stumble upon this video edit: the cinematic 'dragons' and 'zero hour' is really cool imo
If you're thinking of doing more Overwatch trailers, I'd like to recommend Dragons. It's one of the most amazing Overwatch trailers in my personal opinion and it never fails to send goosebumbs down my spine whenever I watch it. Would be fantastic to see your reaction and break down of it.
Blizzard sci-fi: Desert:check. A bar/restaurant as setting:check. Jukebox:check. Character with beard and a revolver:check. Cigar:check. Hoverbike:check.
The "RGB split", like you call it, is actually a real thing called chromatic aberation. Chromatic aberration discribes the inability of lenses to focus all colors of white light onto the same point and is caused by dispersion. Dispersion is a property of the materials used for the lenses and describes how much a given wavelength (or color) gets broken by a lense. Hope that helped :))
I think another thing to add on the section when "the robot" got shot, would be that the scene creates this stretch in time with the fade out of the camera and the "Nooo" being faded as if it would be far away to create a very tragic moment and the feeling of "it was that bad, the time of 1 second felt like hours". Really like the way you analyze the videos and try to tell more and more how things are made and intended by the creators. Keep up the good work!
Seeing this guy basically fall in love with overwatch for the first time is a feeling I wish I could experience all over again, love his appreciation for these cinematics!
What I also really like about the Reunion short is the setup/payoff with the train cars hanging from cables and grunt dropping the grenades that McCree using them later in the fight, and how the Mexican standoff shows where the characters are positioned. Action scenes can be chaotic and disorienting, but the lead up to the fight was great for establishing position and environment.
you should give the FFXiV cinematics a shot A Realm Reborn (basically if we gonna kill our game we´re going to kill it with the most epic fire out there) Heavensward Stormblood and ofc Shadowbringers :)
Alive was really well made. There are some hidden meanings in almost every shot. Like when Tracer recalled and the background is a clock tower that represents her time-rewind ability. And also when Widowmaker shot Halo dead, the camera didn’t really show in the front of Halo but we all can see from the lights on his head that went off meaning that he is dead. So cool
Dragons are the BEST. watch Dragons Dragons Dragons :) Genji ftw. Also ive seen the Overwatch 2 cinematic like 30 times but still goosebumps&tears... cant help it. so i'm looking forward u to watch it :)
In the cowboy one, the focus on the clock turning to 4 minutes to noon is timed perfectly so that when it flicks back to "high noon" as everything kicks off as exactly four minutes pass. Pretty neat imo
In the 2nd clip, the scene with the tumbleweed and the clock striking 12 means a lot to the players since in the game, when McCree uses his ultimate ability, he says it's High Noon as the tumbleweed rolls and then he shoots everyone in his sights after locking on to them.
He should've started with "Overwatch Cinematic Trailer", then "Are You With Us?", and then "Recall". So he at least has a little bit of context of what's going on. After those two, anything is fine. Although my personal favorites are "Dragons", "Honor and Glory" and "Zero Hour".
The teleporting, time-jumping girl is Leena "Tracer" Oxton. She was a test pilot until a mishap with an experimental teleporting (accidentally time-traveling) jet afflicted her with "Chronal Disassociation." She was unable to touch anything and kept flickering in and out of existence until Winston built the "Chronal Accelerator" strapped to her chest. It keeps her anchored to reality and also allows her to manipulate her own passage through time.
You should try "Deus Ex Human Revolution CG trailer" and Assassins Creed 2/Assassins Creed Brotherhood/Assassins Creed Revelations Woodkid - Iron Please!!
I think the most overlooked detail in Alive is how, no matter how Tracer seemed to have the upper hand at some point, Widow is still in complete control over the whole situation. You never see her budge or seem distraught by her antics. She moves around with ease like she knows the area more than her, she has planned routes even when surprised by an anomaly. Widow is behaving like and actual spider. The more Tracer moved around in her web the more she stuck herself until the moment of the kill. The exact moment where you see a smile forming on Amélie's face because as she said : "At the moment of the kill, they feel the most alive". It's also brillant screen play with the web showing at the beginning indirectly telling the story before it happens. I left out a lot of details but there is a lot more to be said about how brilliant of a cinematic this is.
14:34 "of course she survived." me who played tons of hours of overwatch: duh. they both have history together and mcree used to be in their gang. killing them is like killing your own family. hell, he could even easily sneak up and use deadeye on them if he wants to. also me: imlowkeyshippingasheandmcreeeventheirformerwritersaidtheirrelationshipiscomplicated.
After watching the OW videos I just want him to get into the Overwatch lore and read about the characters or smth, I love how much he appreciates all the ideas!
About the characters: The british girl that reverses time goes by Tracer, her actual name is Lena Oxton. Tracer used to be a pilot for Overwatch which is a group of people that tried to fight against evil. A malfunction occurred in the futuristic plane that she was assigned too, giving her a rare condition which involved her teleporting through space and time. Winston, a genetically altered monkey gave her a cure to her condition, which is the machine on her chest. With that machine, she is able to "blink" forwards in time, and be able to reverse time by five seconds or so. The purple assassin goes by Widowmaker, her actual name is Amelie Lacroix. Widowmaker used to be wed to a high classed Overwatch agent that was currently investigating a case against the "evil" organization named Talon. Talon kidnapped Amelie using her as a hostage against Overwatch. During this process, Talon brainwashed and altered Amelie's bodily functions such as slowing her heart rate to make her the ideal assassin. Talon sent back Amelie and the day she was sent back she murdered her husband while he was sleeping. Amelie shortly returned back to Talon and now works under them.
Hi Chris, I heard you wanted to learn about the characters in the shorts you saw, so here are their stories: The first woman you see is named “Widowmaker” however her real name is Amélie Guillard. For much of her life, she was known as an accomplished ballet dancer in Paris. She married Gérard Lacroix, an Overwatch agent, (the “good guys” in the Overwatch universe) spearheading operations against the Talon terrorist organization (the “bad guys obviously). After several unsuccessful attempts to eliminate Gérard, Talon decided to change its focus to his wife. Talon operatives kidnapped her and subjected her to an intense program of neural reconditioning. They broke her will, suppressed her personality, and reprogrammed her as a sleeper agent. She was eventually found by Overwatch agents and returned to her normal life. Two weeks later she killed Gérard in his sleep. Her mission (or Talon’s mission) was complete, Widowmaker returned to Talon, and they completed the process of turning her into a living weapon. She was given extensive training in the covert arts, and then her physiology was altered, drastically slowing her heart, which turned her skin cold and blue and numbed her ability to experience human emotion. The slowing of her heart rate allowed her to become an exceptional sniper. The second woman you see is named “Tracer” however her real name is Lena Oxton. She was the youngest person ever inducted into Overwatch's experimental flight program. Known for her fearless piloting skills, she was handpicked to test the prototype of a teleporting fighter, the Slipstream. But during its first flight, the aircraft's teleportation matrix malfunctioned, and it disappeared. Lena was presumed dead. She reappeared months later, but her molecules had been desynchronized from the flow of time. Suffering from "chronal disassociation," she was a living ghost, disappearing for hours and days at a time. Even for the brief moments she was present, she was unable to maintain a physical form. Scientists were stumped, until a gorilla scientist, yes a gorilla, named Winston designed the chronal accelerator, a device capable of keeping Tracer anchored in the present. It was the thing that Widomaker shot through near the end. In addition, it gave Tracer the ability to control her own time, allowing her to speed it up and slow it down at will. In addition to recalling time, that was what she did after being poisoned by Widowmaker’s mine. In the second short you watch, both characters backstories are connected so i’ll keep it short. You meet a man named Mccree, full name is Jesse Mccree, a cowboy who used to work with the white haired woman, her name is Ashe, full name is Elizabeth Ashe. The two committed an impromptu string of crimes together and with two others, formed the Deadlock Gang. Later one their gang was busted by Overwatch and Mccree was picked up by people in Overwatch to work for them. While Ashe stayed with the gang, writing her name across the American Southwest with a string of audacious heists and operations that has put her at top of the authorities’ most-wanted lists and cemented her legacy as an outlaw legend.
So, Windowmaker (Blue assassin chick) was a ballerina, and the wife of a high ranking member of Overwatch. Talon (The terrorist organization of the Overwatch world) brainwashed Amélie (Lacroix) into killing her husband. She was then picked up by Talon, and turned into the perfect assassin. Her skin is blue, because her heart rate is so slow that it cuts off circulation. This makes it so that her own heart beat tremors don't interfere with her sniper skills. Tracer (Teleporting chick) was a pilot in the Royal Air Force. She was the test pilot for a new type of plane with space/time altering technology. Things went wrong, and she was lost in time for several years. When she finally re-appeared in "modern" time, Winston (Giant Gorilla who is the chief scientist for Overwatch.. You should have watched the previous cinematics for all the backstory before jumping into the middle of the story, but whatever.) was able to make a device that straps to Tracer's chest and back that stabilizes her in time, keeping her here. Without it, she could disappear in time. The device allows her to manipulate her own time stream, allowing her to move forward in time (teleport) or back in time. (Again, it only manipulates her, and not her surroundings.) Mondata, the robot monk, is a high ranking member of the Shambali, a group of monks dedicated to bringing piece between Humans and Omnic's (Omnic = sentient robot.) There was a massive war between the two, that killed thousands. It's still technically going on in both Russia and Korea. In the second cinematic, it shows Jesse McCree. He's a member of Overwatch. He was originally part of the covert ops division called "Backwatch" under Gabriel Reyes (Reaper). (Again, should have watched these in order, so you could get the backstory.) Jesse left that part of Overwatch when Genji left. (Cyborg Ninja.. He appears in an earlier cinematic as well.) This cinematic just shows the gang that McCree was with before joining Overwatch. Edit: The second cinematic is Route 66, which is Arizona. Edit#2: In the second cinematic, it shows one of the gameplay styles of the game. It's a payload mission. The attacking team need to get the payload (the hover cart) to the bad guy's base, while the defending team has to stop them. This shows Jesse as the defending team, and Ashe as the attacking team. Although they start in different locations. Usually the defending team is out and gets to set up camp, while the attacking team wait in the diner.
Tracer doesn't go back in time, she travels threw space bending the space and not the time itself otherwise she could basically live forever just coming back in time even just for a few seconds... Also the space bending is noticeable when she blinks while moving which is basically her bending space forward to herself.
Hey Chris, just a small little tidbit. Tracer's guns actually do have a reason to make a sound when drawn, as much they are held in her hands in the clip prior. Her guns are stored via a section in her her arm bands. The flick out from underneath her arms
