There is actually a series of animations that are being released called 'Morningstar: The Hunt', that I would love you to react to. Maybe wait till they release a couple new episodes, as there is only one out this far, but the lighting looks great, so far the cinematography seems good, and it's sort of a mix of Warhammer and StarCraft maybe, with a bit of Tron in there, along with a heavy cassette-futurism vibe like you see in Aliens and Warhammer 40k and whatnot. As you can tell, they drew inspiration from quite a few things 😂. It's made by the animators of Warhammer 40k: The Exodite, an exceptionally short and rather lacklustre series of a whopping three episodes, though I believe that is mostly down to GW's management, so there's some really talented people on there, especially in the lighting department. Really enjoying the videos, keep up the good work!

You keep saying the last half makes them all look like toys, but to be perfectly fair, this is the Warhammer 9th edition trailer. It's literally an ad to sell toys.
Please please please do more on the World of Warcraft cinematics, they are marvelous and has so much intricate details and techniques. Would love to hear your breakdowns on them as it really gives more weight to each scene.
Fun story, those robots "necrons" Started out as "chaos terminators" in the old space crusade game :) They later became necrons. 1980's GW really were like magpies picking up all sorts of things from sci-fi media back then. The imperial "police" are basically just Judge Dredd lol.
They really did copy everything and just made the names so bad, like copying someone's homework. Nowadays they take themselves way too seriously for a company that makes plastic toys, but all the lore is so vast and whilst some may argue not well fleshed out, it's still believable IF you don't look too hard. Just like their military tactics and such, an utter mess for supposedly super intelligent military bigbrains, but looks cool :D
@esaedvik yeah the military tactics are often lacking pretty badly but I have only read like 3 or 4 books but it generally consists of running straight into the enemy and firing lol
@@primary2630 depends on the army, but even worse in general GW's most frequent narrative is that a battle is decided with the 2 generals dueling in close combat
Probably the main reason they did the “toy” look, and the much brighter lighting in the second half was to show off all the new models that would be coming out for you to play.
I feel like this might have gotten lost with the rest of the commentary, but you mentioned why they are having him walk away with the window behind him around 34 minutes in. Its because the Sister says "The Emperor sends his Angels!", then the Marine kills the Destroyer, and it frames him with the aquila wings acting as his angel wings. That's what I got from it anyway.
The male voiceover is done by Toby Longworth, he does many Audio Dramas for Black Library. I love listening to his voice, he could read the telephone book to me, I would listen.
Pariah Nexus brought me back to play 10th edition Adepta Sororitas! (played 2nd 'Nids and 3rd Chaos Marines ) 😊 The animation and the voice actress for Sister Danica are able make her a more relatable character than anything Marvel or DC has managed to do in live action! 1,000pts assembled, just waiting to get base coated and then painted! #DeathToTheHeretic 😅
Love the breakdown I think a lot of the things you point out they corrected in the later trailers this was the first CGI trailer they made and started spinning up an actual studio. There’s a massive improvement in the edition trailers over the past 4-5 years. There’s also definitely a few bright shots because in each edition trailer they’re showing off brand new models it’s rumored would be released. But I felt the same way about the second half a bit stiff.

Hey man, thanks for coming back! I had to change the way I made the videos, they were killing me and had me asking, should I pack it in. A lot less editing than before but I hope you still enjoy them even if you just watch parts. Elder Scrolls Online is something I've had my eye on and Star Wars I was going to look at next week. However the PC I'm currently using is going in to be fixed today, she aint happy. Robocop Rogue City has smashed her in haha. So all videos have been stopped until after Christmas or it's back in my possession. This is why I've uploaded today instead of the weekend. Believe it or not, this video is one of 2. @@kaizammit of course i enjoy them! its great to recieve some insight from an industry professional. in all honesty, your personality is the star in your content, so the amount of editing isnt always a definitive factor. as long as it flows, i just like to see you watch cool shit! i heard robocop was actually good which surprised me - i wasnt sold on the whole slow-moving fps but it looks like it actually plays really well. i was playing space marine for a while in preparation for space marine 2, whole lot of fun. apparently orcs are hilarious lol, did not think that would work initially sorry to hear about your PC! hope you get it back soon
@@afatasidylan Thanks man! That is also why I'm happy the change happened. I was so scripted that I couldn't just be me. I forget most things as I'm going along but that's because I'm excited haha! To be fare, I tried it for 6 something months so I gave it a bloody good shot. Now the content will come every week, sometimes more if something cool happens or I've got the time. Robocop is a bucket load of fun, just doesn't like my machine. I think it's one of my SSD's going or it's fate saying calm down a bit. She'll be back my little beauty. Its interesting what different experts see as the most fascinating part. I watched a cgi artist have a minigasm over the particle effects of the Guardsman dying to the Necron Guass Beam.
Always enjoy seeing your initial reaction as a newcomer to the Warhammer universe & breakdowns as a professional cinematographer afterwards. Warhammer is many things, like lore filled with loops upon loops, contradictions left and right, but when it comes to presentation and what catches the eye then Warhammer will deliver nothing but the best and for table top miniatures this is brilliant in my opinion for immersion and imagination, so slap that miniature with some paint, glue that to some imaginative lore and you are invested in each character on your table top.
This trailer was surprising when it first came out. First this was the first time Games-Workshop had done a animated trailer like this. Second was that starting focus was Sisters of Battle, that in context of product releases made sense, they had just gotten a full line refresh earlier in the year. For the Space Marines and Necrons everything you saw of them was a representation of models that would be featured in the 9th Launch Box, and later Starter sets.
The Editor for this trailer dropped the ball in one aspect, back in the Temple the one marine's helmet eye pieces were a gold color once he was outside after their charge forward the lenses were green. Have admit I never noticed that myself until you got it that part in your breakdown portion.

I completely agree with your criticisms. One of the issues I see is that since this is an official Games Workshop animation, they put an emphasis on making the 3d models look as close as possible to the miniatures (for advertising purposes obviously). When compared to other, mostly fan-made animations that take a more realistic or cinematic look to their characters, so the official GW ones look a bit toy-like as a result.
The problem with 40k is that GW hires people to do their stuff, they have 60 authors for books, +20 different animation teams over the years. That's why they move, look and feel slightly different in every medium.
Im glad you are going so in depth with it, pointing everything out, nicely explaining all the little stuff and the whole process, painting the full picture :) also appreciate the fact that you are pointing out the flaws and deficiencies :) definitely agree that from the point when the necron breaches the building and attacks the sister it falls off a bit, the way they kill the thing isnt impactful enough it feels rushed, the lighting gets messed up its all too bright, that 2nd half of this trailer reminds me of Bionicle especially looking at the red helmet and the way things move :D it almost feels like they didnt have enough budget to push it all the way :P

Don't the smoke and haze also emphasize chaos and confusion of war here? Not to mention sister of battle coming out of the haze as a flicker of hope for the poor guardswoman

Really want to see what you feel about all the little cinematic tricks they used in 40k 10th ED trailer! Also 40k clankers hit quite a bit different than star wars clankers :D
I highly recommend 10th edition its very different from this one more Grimm dark. And the space marine armoring up trailer that shows how SM get armored up and what goes into very detailed I figure youd like that. The female with the black armor is a sister of battle, basically a all female organization that answers to the church as its armed wing. If you to see more of this fight I recommend watching pariah nexus its very short 3 episodes showing how the war went in the city, it involves a sister, SM, and some civilians. You keep comparing this to space marine 2 i think that’s disingenuous, this is a trailer for miniatures for a table top game(hence why they look like toys they are selling toys here) while the other is a multi-million dollar game for consoles and PC so yeah its going to be animated differently and shown differently but i get what your saying it just feels like your comparing apples to oranges here
I was meant to have the 'new edition' guessing 10th edition out this week but it will have to be next week now. Thanks for letting me know about the other stuff, sounds like I've got more Warhammer to check out. I'm loving it. Regarding comparing cinematics, that's what I have to go on, that's my reference point. I understand they want to sell miniatures but looking at the 10th edition, they clearly want it to be as realistic as possible and that sells. I'm sure the table top figures sell way more than the games ever do, right? Or is it not as popular? I personally think it was down to budget restrictions which led to the creative choice given. They would also spend more money on a game cinematic because they want to attract more audience members, a new audience type who doesn't care about the table top game. If this cinematic had the budget that Space Marine 2 had, it would have looked different but for them, this is fan service with the hope of attracting a few new players into the hobby. I wonder what the helmets would have looked like in this cinematic if they looked more like glass?? That's what I would have pushed for. I kind of prefer this one. I hate the Tyranids as an antagonist since they have no personality. Necrons at least have style and personality (for the higher ranking ones)

Budget was blown on the first half which pulled you, me and everyone else in. Once you're hooked, you were there for the entire ride. I still enjoyed it though but not as much as the next one that's coming on the channel.

@@kaizammit the sisters of battle dont tend to go for the augmentations of Space marines. they are baseline humans, just use similar equipment as for the necrons (the robot things) those green beams break what they hit to their componant atoms....hence the dusting effect of the troopers at the start
@@kaizammit Not anymore. She is just a normal human who the church has made into a brainwashed radical zealot and elite soldier, given power armour and sent out to burn heretics (mostly). She would view the marine as an angel of her God (not a made super soldier). To the marine, she is an insect below interest. She was only worth a passing glance as she decapitated that Necron Skorpekh Destroyer.

I've watched dozens of reactions to this cinematic and half the time I would just stop watching at the point where they left the cathedral. The second half of the video didn't really interest me as much but I never truly considered why. I think I realize why now! Thanks!

@@kaizammit Well, every new-numbered game in that franchise is separate game, tied to others only by some naming (Bahamut, Mothercrystal etc). FF14 is an MMO, close to WoW type gameplay, with story-driven narrative. Unlike other similar games, here you need to progress story (A good one, especially from Heavensward and onwards) to unlock content. So yeah, FF14 as good as any other Final Fantasy to start. Most single player parts of franchise are JRPGs with tactical gameplay, and new FF16 is epic action-slasher game (Some boss fights from there are might worth your attention from cinematic perspective (Ifrit vs Titan Lost, Ifrit vs Bahamut etc). And, just for the record, if you need FF14 cinematics in chronological order: 1.0 (old and not really worth it I think), Flames of Truth, Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker, Danwtrail (not fully released yet, only teaser)

lol its funny, because your criticism of this trailer mirrors the communities' reaction to 9th edition over all. Every thing looked great and had a wonderful set up. but then they just didn't land it toward the end.
Hey, not sure if someone else has suggested this or not, I've only just found your videos ^^ but my interpretation of the lack of 'shaky cam' In the sister's combat scenes and injury would be based on her emotional state as it's the figure we are supposed to be following and empathising with, it brings across that despite the desperate fight, she is fearless and focused, as a Sister of Battle would be. Very fitting if you know the lore. Loving your videos by the way, its been great seeing behind the curtain a little at what appeals to our brains in these videos and how that's used to make us feel something.
I like that. Every filmmaker is different and so is the story or how it's represented that is. The only people who really know is the creative team. It's probably as simple as they just want you (audience) to be able to see the new models. Also now that I'm in the actual commentary part of the video, I do like that you don't just react but actually do give interesting insight into filming techniques. more lore stuff, the Imperial guard kind of act like the "worf" characters, trope wise. They give us a baseline to compare everything too. So in this we go Imperial Guard < Sister of Battle ( also female and awesome) = Necron and in the end < Space Marines (and at the end it suggests that while the space marines are awesome and elite, they need the teamwork from everyone else to succeed)
I agree about the second half. I think the space marines look too polished and that makes them stand out from the setting they've been dropped in. Their lighting is too much and instead of emphasizing them it makes their models start to bleed through onto the scene.
Kai, as a massive Warhammer fun, not only I am extactic about you covering the franchise's media, but, most importantly NEVER and I mean NEVER feel guilty for criticizing any art piece. No matter the franchise or fandom. Yes, people are here to watch an expert analyze and gush about a great cinematic. But if you were not honest when criticism must be moved, then the "gushing" would lose its point. Because at that point, how could people trust you with actually, objectively liking what you are reviewing? Stay 100%. Some people may get pissed, but that's only part for the course on the internet. Can never make everyone happy, especially man children LOL keep it up, I'm loving the content! For a criticism of my won tho, I did prefer when you edited your videos, it allowed the review to flow more nicely and maybe avoid repetitions. But again, great stuf!!

Regarding the new video format, I had to change it fella. I'm sorry. I loved the other way but the editing was killing me, I started losing all my free time etc and it made me want to give up the channel or at least think about it. Is it worth it so to speak.
