Cheap LED lights... I should invest in the good ones but they are so damn expensive 😲 Btw what portable gimbal do you recommend me for an A7III+Tamron 28-75? I was about to buy the Ronin S...
@@YCImaging I make videos for work and only have one six year old video up on my own channel from when my son was three but I have to change that. When he's not being a typical nine year old mouthy Fortnite junkie he really is fun to film.
@@AshLordCurry my kids are going to get a 2 hours of screen time a week I swear. Go for a walk little fella. I don't care that it's 32 F you need fresh air. XD
@@AshLordCurry imagine your dad sitting you down with his amiga, when the n64 was popular. We have to accept that our favorites won't be theirs 😅 But if i can, i will give my future son a gamecube and ps2 until he's old enough to understand, that they are old and dusty consoles haha
You are so right. Most of the hype to get the right job, when most never really use it for the job they really want or end up with. All the hype created the current student loan crisis. One of the biggest scams being pulled on our parents and young adults.
100% Me too! I got a graphics design degree in 2000. I worked in the field for 2 years - realized that there isn't any creative freedom while you are working for the man. I left the field and worked other regular jobs. 20 years later, my student loans have doubled in size because of interest and using the deferment payments etc. I guess I do appreciate my degree because I use the basis of it for my own film production etc. But I honestly learned 95 percent of what I know about that on RU-vid.
Sometimes I get caught up in all the newest gear and cameras... but I just have to remember that gear and cameras will never make you a better filmmaker. It will only give you more ways to tell your story.
@@yosam.mp4 I bought the dongle because I do need the extra behind it. I must mention that no where written, but you got Fusion full at the same time. I even bought used, so gave something like 160 Euro for 600 dollars Software package
I remember my uncle telling me, "Look at an expensive item cost, divide that by how much you know you will actually use, and then you know it's worth your money." That thinking saved me from a few lenses, a drone, and other equipment.
Hmm, something is very wrong with that equation LMAO. It means the more you'll use something, the less it is worth to you. Maybe he meant divide the number of times you'll use it by its price as a percentage (x100) ? That way, if you use it 100 times it's worth it's price. If you use it 200 times it was worth double its price, etc. If you only use it 10 times, it was worth 10% of its price.
@@cooloox It's not meant to be actual math. The thought is if I use a 2000 dollar item once, I wasted it. If I divide it by a higher number of uses, I look at it more as money and more times I would have invested toward it.
Small tip on the Haze: I bought a small fog machine (20$) and light smoke fluid. Let it spray a bit and use a reflector to spread the fog and you'll get the sickest haze ever. Love this, ready within 5minutes.
1 - Cheap glidecam: Was never able to balance it correctly, tried to use it a few times but it mostly sat unused. lent it to a friend and never bothered getting it back lol 2 - Camera rig cage with Matte box: Bought pretty much just to make the camera look more expensive on shoots and impress clients lol. 3 - Cheap UV filters: absolute crap, unusable 4- Edit: Gopro Hero 2: used it once for some underwater shots, footage was nowhere near as nice as in the ad All those purchases were during the 5D mk ii era
Same on both. Although I actually bought the Glidecam Glidecam... Used it maybe once then never again as it was such a ball ache to balance and shoot with. I keep thinking one day I'll use my matte box but that day never actually seems to come...
I'd expand this to any gear that's super cheap, especially camera support. I have bought so many $10 cine arms only to have them lose their tension after a couple of uses. For me it was worth it to splurge on the manfrotto arm. V pricey at $130, but that thing is rock solid!
That’s why I buy every piece of film gear I own used(apart from camera bodies). Most of the time I can use the piece of gear for a yr or so until I don’t need it and then sell it for the same amount or more. Saves a lot of money that would have went to renting the equipment!
Ah, Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS). Here's what I do, either bookmark the product page or put it in a B&H or amazon wish list, that way I can look at it if I want to. Once the shiny object effect has worn off, I can think more critically about whether it's a good potential purchase or not.
Daniel Earl i do the exact same... shelf it in the cart then if I still want it a couple months later I talk to my friends about it so they can talk me out of it. Those that no one talks me out of get purchased!
Same thing for me. Even if im shopping in best buy. I just walk around the store to let the excitement level go down. After that i walk out without buying.
Spending 1000 extra dollars on f 2.8 zoom lenses to shoot in “low light” instead of buying actual lights for a fraction of the cost and the quality is so much better. Rarely shoot video below f4 and always need light. Live and learn
Pshhht, you can't say that in here. At least half of the RU-vidrs are thriving on the idea that the so-called low-light capabilities of cameras/lenses and shooting wide open to get that blurry background is the way to go!
@@tobiasmoeckel LMFAO so true. But I've always loved that look in cinema, even before the DSLR / mirrorless days. The extreme bokeh is a more modern look though. I've been going back through some classics and these historic cinematographers seldom use extreme bokeh unless depicting loneliness or isolation. Otherwise, it has limited narrative function, it hides excellent set design and lighting.
Kobanu I have my main hero 6. It’s rad. I got a thieye t5pro as a back up and an akaso ek7000. I got the akaso for Christmas. Not really selling any yet. My daughter uses the t5pro and the akaso would cost as much in shipping as we paid for it. Lol!!
Same story here with my drone. In the last year here in the UK I’ve had less than half a dozen opportunities to use it. It’s either too windy, raining, snowing or I’m in restricted airspace. Definitely money down the drain.
i’m glad to learn about the haze in a can. i was just about to buy a bunch of this stuff. i would have been livid having gotten it all over the place 🤭 great tip!
I've got some of these exact cans and have never had this issue so I was surprised it was mentioned here. Maybe I don't spray enough, I don't know but I often use quite a bit and I haven't noticed anything on my lens, camera or any other surface
I spend weeks researching stuff so i rarely ever waste money. And if I dont use it I'll sell it. Ive found it best to only buy high end and used if possible. That way when you sell it you recoup most of what u put into it and since its highend it holds its value.
Completely regret getting a slider. I got a 36” one and it’s too large for one tripod to be stable. I’ve used it once since last year... wish I got my fly cam stabilizer sooner tho - I use that in almost every shoot. It’s amazing.
I regret purchasing my 1st camera and throwing it in the trash. Never used it because I thought it was broken. 5 months later I learned I purchased a camera "body" with no lens. Straight noob!
I’ve made the exact same mistaken purchases; the gimbal for vlogging, the GoPro and Insta360 for those “niche” shots, and the Mavic, they all saw some use but mostly just sits there because it’s just so outside of my normal workflow
Bro would you ever consider doing a full BTS video, from how you set up to how you direct and shoot your clients, the reasoning behind the shots you choose, this would be a dope insight into the amount of information you've given us and now we'd just need to to see how it's all applied... I definitely find that when I shoot, the amount of musicians that say wow "you actually direct me, not just point the camera and tell me to go" is shocking, i personally would love to see you work and just how you manage a set, your team and set up lighting ect all in motion ⚡️🔥
When I was first buying my gear, I fell in love with the Canon T7i, great auto focus, blah, blah, blah... I need 2 cameras for interviews. I made the second canon the Canon SL2, same great quality for video, give up some on photos... Now whenever I do interviews, I'm setting up 2 different cameras with different controls. Should have spent the extra $150 and had 2 T7i cameras.
I definitely regretted buying all sorts of rigs for my small micro four-thirds camera. Ended up being too heavy, cumbersome, without achieving the desired stabilization. I have thought very seriously about buying a gimbal and a drone. This video has helped change my mind about it. Thanks so much and keep up the awesome videos!
Sony a7r3 as an xt-2 shooter for wedding I thought I needed eye af got the camera now I cannot afford professional lenses. Fuji primes way affordable and most of the time I only need two for a wedding shoot. One wide and one close up
This is hands down one the greatest video ideas 👏👏. You Tubers talk so much about what products to get and how great they are. But regretting those purchases is never seen. Great video men!!
I once bought those little wheels that attach to the bottom of a tripod! MANNNNN those wheels picked up every single microscopic bump! even on the smoothest floor! (if you ever need bumpy footage use those wheels lol).
I have so much footage of my son doing exactly what yours did. Lol. The funny thing is my 59 dollar knock off goPro makes him just as happy. Hero 7 is amazing for dash board hyperlapses and underwater but it’s so niche I barely use mine either. Thx for the video. Good to k ow about that gimbal
The zhiyun crane v2 is still an amazing gimbal especially for the price. Newer bigger gimbals hold more weight but if you have a small light weight setup like a mirrorless fujifilm or Sony camera you can’t go wrong. I still have it but I use it less often bc I graduated from a fuji xt2 to a xh1 which has in body camera stabilization built in, but sometimes I pull it out too just to impress the clients lol.
As much as I love my SmallRig shoulder rig, I've only used it on one short film and I really didn't even need it for that. Definitely could've saved that $300+. Also I bought a cheap $100 slider that literally is worse than going handheld, so add that to the list. Also, I know the DJI ring is different, but I honestly love my SmallRig ring. Yes, you loose a couple inches at the bottom and can't get right down to the ground, but at least you can still get low shots with one hand on a top handle and one hand on the side. I also love being able to mount basically whatever I want to it. The biggest reason I got mine was for the feet. I did pay a premium for the actual SmallRig feet, but I think it was 100% worth it. It's a hefty setup, but I've had the best footage since adding the ring!
Same. I would have to use gimbals for specific shots in videos. The thing is is those specific shots come maybe once or twice a year. Not worth the money.
USA is crazy how you can do that. In New Zealand you can't return an item unless it's faulty. Even if the item is unopened only some places will accept a return. And then they give you a store credit instead of refund
Jai Kavi understandable. And this is why I LOVE Best Buy. I’m an elite plus member there also, which means I have a total of 45 days!!! To test out and keep almost anything before I can return it.
brought 2 Karma drones played with them 2 years ago and they came with the Gopro 6.... We are just using 1 Gopro 6 for our live channel. Why???? because it's HDMI and wide looks cool. I may put the drones in the air because of this video...... well this summer.....lol
Thank you for taking the time to share this list bro. Im sure a lot of us were bitting nails, praying our purchases were not on the list 😂😂. You hit me twice man lol. I blame it on strategic, but well crafted marketing. Companies know that gear is the talk of the town, and all they need is one video that correctly demonstrates how that piece of gear will change your life. It is usually easy for me to justify why I need a certain piece of gear. I found that without that strong accountability, or voice of reason there is nothing to stop me neither. I have made some ridiculous purchases, but after watching a Dave Ramsey rant about every dollar, I realized I need to be more creative on a budget. The end of last year I decided to simplify things, and I just started getting getting rid of stuff. I think it has made me more clear headed as a creative, and even more driven to produce content. Renting can be a solid choice, if you can’t see ROI on the item you are thinking of buying. I actually just picked up a GoPro 7 black for around $190, and now debating if I should return it after watching this lol. I feel like I would use it, but man I’m all about saving for the bigger picture these days (C500 Mk ii). Keep up the hard work man, you don’t get established by always playing it safe, but also don’t use that as a stepping stone to buy a $50,000 camera lol. Thanks again for sharing your honest opinion.
Yoooo I love the way you introduced Squarespace, I laughed so hard man 😂🤣 And yes they won’t regret it. I use it and it’s perfect! All in 1 platform 🔥 Great vlog today Chrys 🙌🏾 I watched it twice in a row. Btw, if you wanna give your ronin grip away, maybe I could be your guy.😁 I’ve been looking forward to buying it for the type of work that I do. I just can’t afford it yet.
85 GM 1.4,, sold it at a loss, realized huge lenses aren’t my style. Same with gimbals. Thanks for this video, reiterates what I’ve been thinking lately: KNOW YOUR CINEMATIC NEEDS, FILL THEM, CREATE. All that other noise is just a distraction
Appreciate you opening up. I definitely feel you on not using some stuff that I thought was going to revolutionize my filmmaking, but I also make it a point to go out and gear test every once in a while. Gets me more comfortable with my gear and helps me decide why I'm not using it (be it lenses, audio recorders/mics, etc.) I've rediscovered vintage lenses that I thought I didn't like, but after playing with them found an appreciation for them. I fly my old Phantom II a lot more now than when I bought it because I'm finally comfortable with it. If I specifically test it out and spend some time with it, and I still don't like it/feel like I'll use it, that's when it goes away. Just my 2 cents.
Mayther Digital haha same! Was anticipating it while I was waiting for it to deliver, used it for a few days and now it just sits on the shelf. Phone case for it is nice tho.
Love the honesty and positive vibes man 👍🏼 Biggest purchase regret for me so far is SLR Magic Cineprimes for Fuji X-mount. They're amazing lenses, but I went away from my usual mindset of buying lenses that I can use even when I switch cameras. Long-story-short I upgraded cameras, and now here I am having to buy lenses for the new camera since I can only use SLR Magics on a Fuji 🤦🏻♂️
I've done what I thought was good research, and found out that a few things really weren't that great. Glad I never paid for a name brand GoPro, though.
Bruh. I spend months researching, watching reviews, looking at cheaper alternatives, debating if its worth it before I buy anything! Took me a month to pick a coffee maker lol. My gf gets so annoyed but i rarely regret my purchases.
Man, my list is long.. a crane for video, a few led panels that i used once before i realized no modifiers were available, numerous polarising filters, color filters, protection filters, tripods that were too heavy, bad camera bags and so on. Also important to mention: buying things to make a video look better and forgetting to put them on the bill like flowers, xmas beards or suits, masks, balloons, backgrounds..
Buying a DSLR when I didn't have time to use it. I bought the Canon 70D and it sat on my shelf for the vast majority of its life. Only came out several times and took some memorable photos. I bought it for the video except barely shot any videos with it. I've now upgraded to Sony a6400 and shoot video every day. Reason being is that I've made a commitment to do so. I love it!
An off-brand shoulder rig from Amazon that ended up simply hurting my back on a 12-hour event shoot and not being very stable. I stopped buying cheap experimental products from Amazon after that! I am excited about my Mavic Air though, if it were nice every day I'd fly it every day, as I'm in NJ, the shore capital of the world! Filming boardwalks, marinas, cities, harbors and abandoned theme parks on the beach never gets old. My Recommendation on your Mavic is to use it as a mini-vacation from getting work done when you're stressed out, remember that little dude wants to do what it does best just as much as you do.
Gopro cameras are so underrated imo. I use them not only for action and underwater but also quick timelapses and some "gimbal shots" with the hero 7. Its great!
Man I can relate! Wow just the video us creatives need! WHAT I REGRET! The Ronin S sits. GOPRO SOLD, A POWERFUL IMAC. I DID BETTER WITH THE MACBOOK PRO. MAN SO MUCH MORE
I still have the first Zhiyun crane and it's been the greatest purchase. After 2 years and it's still running strong for weddings and run n gun music videos. Super light. Does everything it needs. Buy some dual grip handles and you're golden.
I haven't purchased anything I can regret yet. I've benged watched all your videos even bts+vlogs and have always listened to you when you said if it doesn't fit into your workflow dont purchase and that's what I stick to. I'm sure I'm going to regret buying something though 🤣.
For me...buying s*hitty tripods to save money, burning through like 6 of them in a year and realizing I should have just got a better one to begin with!
Around 10 years ago I bought my first HD camera, A waterproof Sanyo camcorder that shot really crappy 720p footage. I upgraded shortly after that. A waste of money for sure.
not gonna lie man, your advice, hits home every single time, i learn different ways of doing things every single time, an it's also the way you bring things forward, it's not too "buy this, you must buy this, this is great" naaaah, very relaxed.
Well I’m still beginning to buy gears ⚙️ because I’m new to videography and you are that one person that I look up to and there’s one thing I really wanna focus on is coloring with DaVinci resolve . If you can make a video for that , that will be awesome 👏 . I pray I don’t buy gear I’ll never use lol, I don’t even have that much money 😁😁
Part of the process is learning what you need and what you don’t. 🙂 We have to buy and try, its how we become wiser. Don’t beat yourself up to much, we have all been there bud! . I always check the return policy on equipment. B&H is my home away from home! Great content by the way! 👏🏾👏🏾✌🏾
great video. helpful! My Ronin-M is a pain in my ass and craps out on me all. the. time. but I still need it and use it often.. If I get some cinematic lenses with vibration reduction I'll ditch it fast.
motorized slider (never left the box), garage company gimbal (never worked), all the metal pipe to build whatever equipment i was too cheap to buy. i've put over $1000 in steel pipe that's never been assembled, projects never been completed. I did make a jib once for around $60 that was pretty sweet.
Man, I appreciate this video a lot.. I’m just a casual content creator and I always think of the next best vlogging gear to help me with my workflow. But seeing this video made me think twice especially about the buying a SLR gimbal, and a drone, thanks for the upload!
The only thing I regret with my filmmaking is not buying the best I could afford from the start, things like lower end lenses, tripods, cameras etc cost me more in the long run as I had to upgrade after a year of owning them because they didn’t fit my needs. I’ve probably spent 2x what I needed to because of this. But I guess that’s the process!
i bought a 7 inch monitor for shooting weddings thinking the bigger the better, now it never gets used because its too big and limits my gimbal movements. mega rip
Dope content. Thanks for sharing bro! I bought some lights from a vendor on FB. They were like homemade LED panels that produces a revolutionary "soft light." Colorright Power Panel. These things were a scam! Customer service was NON-EXISTENT. After I purchased I saw A TON of dissatisfied customers; some who even doxxed the CEO to humiliate him. What a waste of money!
Yo Y, there ain’t enough characters in this post to list all the camera equipment I regret purchasing... BTW, I’m posting this as I’m scrolling amazon, looking for more gear to purchase😫
My first camera! If I’d never bought it I’d be a millionaire with all the money I would have saved not buy all the additional gear and subsequent camera bodies. 😂
I'm really regret that I bought an IKEA MARKUS chair, as you have in the background. It looks very stylish, I was crazy about the purchase. But after many hours of editing, I realized that I became very stooped. I had a back pain. You sit in it like in a hammock, your spine falls back, while a chair pushes your shoulders forward. In addition, the headrest pushes your head forward too. As a result, you are sitting in a shrimp pose. In the end, I decided to sell it. I hate it because it fooled my expectations. Now I’ve chosen a more comfortable one, which can be better adjusted to my back, which allows my spine and shoulders to be straight. And it is 3 times cheaper.
I am a borrower. I borrow stuff from friends or rent it - see if there is a need and then purchase. Its saved me so much $$$ This was a tough video to watch. Great information.
Definitely the gimbal thing. Man, the setup, the adjustments... it's so time-consuming. Also, cheap lenses. Now, I'm down to 4 lenses, and they're all decent quality. I used to just buy a lens on sale on Amazon or B&H lol. Back to the gimbal though, my Moza air 2 just sits there. I've tried them all... and they all kinda suck. Now, I know why some of the biggest filmmakers on YT say to stay away. I just listened to some hype-masters on here. Last thing would be watching so many sponsored videos of YTers saying that you need to buy a product in order to make it. I fell into that trap earlier on in my hobby, and I can't believe that some of them are still growing on here. Blows my mind.
Back when gimbals were getting popular I went out and bought one for my Canon t3i and 5dmkii. I think it was CameTV? It was a pretty good gimbal at the time, but the footage was always shotty and I was burning through sensors doing constant video so I had a dislike for dslr video footage and I hated the idea of trying to focus on the fly and disturbing the gimbal. Right after I made that purchase, DJI released the original Osmo. This changed things for me forever. I rarely use the gimbals nowadays anyways, but when I do, they look great and function well for the their purpose. - Dji Osmo Pro for some more professional looking stuff like weddings and b-roll on bigger sets, Osmo original for real estate, Osmo Pocket for travel and hobbies. Each serves a purpose. Thank you Dji.
