Every mother in the Philippines knows this martial art. When children are misbehaving or hard headed, they whip out a broom, slipper, or anything they can get their hands on and perform Kali on their child. No matter how the child evades, the mother always hits her mark.

Kali was conceptualize with a very precise goal: to kill your opponent swiftly and efficiently. Close-range full contact combat utilizing most parts of the body or anything your hands can get a hold of as weapons. Kali is deadly. It's for combat, it's not made for sports, that's probably why some have seen impracticality in the aspect of application such as in sparring or sports demonstrations. Kali in it's "diluted" or less lethal form is made into art but when in it's real form it's a skill. A very deadly, very effective one. It's a fighting system more than a martial arts.

The term martial arts refers to all of the various systems of training for combat that have been arranged or systematized. Generally, these different systems or styles are all designed for one purpose: physically defeating opponents and defending against threats. In fact, the word 'martial' derives from the name Mars, who was the Roman god of war.

When we were grade 4 primary school it was part of our rhythmic exercises every morning but they remove the curriculum. After a few years I found out that the Department of Education of the Philippines remove it because it was unstable for sports. At those year they tried to make it a sport but due to the fatal blows and unpredictable hits (smart opponent) of skillful player’s. There is no body armor that can protect the opponent in sparring practices and tournaments. And believe me it can bring permanent injuries even death.

The thing about Kali is that it's one of the most realistic styles of fighting. No sweep kicks, spinning kicks, none of those acrobatic stuff that's easy to dodge and leaves you with so many openings. Kali is used in very close quarter combat that uses disarming techniques when you're at a disadvantage, pounding techniques when you want to weaken your opponent's arms/legs by punching/kicking their biceps, and knuckle techniques that is mainly used to attack the joints (elbow, shoulder, knees). A really effective style of fighting that's good against street fights or other martial arts technique. The first thing you need to do in fighting your enemy is to make them weak so you could easily finish them off.

But not as it's taught way too often. Sure there is great technical training. But often the student doesn't really know what exactly he practices. And the risk with fancy drills is that you get used to many movements you should NOT try in the certain context. FMA has a similiar trend then Karate what developed from a fighting art to more a way of self perfection than self defence. So the roots get lost over the time. But it's not only a problem of THAT art but of most of them. Peaceful times accelerate that knowledge gets lost. Also technical training doesn't mean only that whatever techniques are taught. Often tactics are missing, too. And to be honest: If you fight like on most tournaments with uncountable strikes and very much protection gear it is really deadly. For all participants.

Kali is the oldest term used in FMA dating back 1600 or even earlier. There were big tribes in Luzong (now Luzon) and particular part in Visayas like Bohol, Cebu, etc. were they have extremely skilled warriors that the kingdoms of Borneo, Indonesia, Malaysia (before it was united), and even in Hong Kong & China, would call/hire them for help whenever their kingdom struggles to win a war. They're a killing machines during those times that a small compact unit of 10 could slaughter 40 or more enemy warriors. After Ferdinand Magellan was brutally killed in the war, Spaniards studied and learned about our complex cultures and noticed common weakness: "Gold & Power". That's how Legaspi started his soft approach and with the aid of Vatican Friars. They used gold & power to divide the kingdoms & tribes so that they would kill each other, followed with Christian religion to tone & tame them, and later on turning them into vassals. During the middle part of Spanish rules, Filipinos slowly were taken back to their senses and build up direct & indirect resistance. Because we were deprived of guns supply, our old lethal combat system was revived. The rest was history.

@imllendream
@imllendream 3 года назад
@@ryogahibiki1641 , Yes there were those bronze & iron canons, and as I can recall, Rajah Sulayman has one of the few biggest ones at 17ft long. Having close economic & partly military/political relations with China that dates back to more or earlier than 1000AD, as well as with Taiwan, Thailand, Brunei, it isn't a surprise that bigger native kingdoms would eventually adapt gun powders & canons - as well as their production. However, after it was way too late for Filipinos to realise that they're already under the tyranny of Spaniards, chances of producing or even importing such technology was already non-existing during 300 years of Spanish rule whereby strick curfews were conducted every night and whenever 2 or more people caught by Spanish intelligence & their assets doing or even just talking against the Spanish Govt't, they could be put to prison or punished by death.

Kali has other forms, like arnis, eskrima, sikaran....... In Arnis you sometimes use dual wielding sticks or single stick..... The sticks has two type, the Heavy Baton, that can break you're bones, because it gives you more power when hitting you're opponent, and Light Baton, that can wound enemies, giving you much more speed attacking. Eskrima is the same with Arnis, except it use bladed weapons, such as sword, axe, and knives. Sikaran use kicks, often use when you don't have weapon. My favorite is knives, giving speed and very deadly once hit.

Always being the victims of slavery by the slavetraders in Mindanao, the Visayans have learned the twirls and snaps used for infighting. Arnis is the FMA of the Northern Philippines - Luzon. Kali is deadly. You start with blades for the main reason you want to kill your opponent. Its no use starting empty handed as you will be mostly dead, or full of stab wounds. The most experts of practitioner could do without a weapon. In the villages of the Philippines, a man without a bolo willing to fight a bolo weilding man is the epitome of bravery and means either of only two things .. he is extremely stupid or extremely superior in his knowledge of fighting skills. You could say Kali is the reverse of other martial arts. You start learning with weapons but progress to such level that you don't need weapon.

What most people don't knoW is that Filipino martial arts practitioners actually join death matches. The FMA is basically a family based art and family members fight for family pride. Death matches were banned in 1948. One family in Cebu lost a lot of family members. So to some people who are saying this is fake, that is insulting to the art. The original family based martial arts were deadly, intended to kill with minimal movement. The recent "westernization" of the secretive family based martial arts leadto incorporation of movements that are fancy. FMA is originally intended for street fighting. BJJ is an adaptation of Japanese kodokan judo and was never intended as a martial arts for street fighting, where more than 2 combatants might be involved. Being on the ground with so many involved is a disadvantage. Its origin was for one on one matches. BJJ is an advantage in MMA octagon or ring but under street fight? Here is just one story and there are so many Cebu based FMA practitioners who are old enough who would attest to the existence of death matches. www.villabrillelargusakali.com/about-2/grandmaster-floro-villabrille
