In this video I show you how to fix a leaking or stiff push/pull backwash valve commonly found on most D.E. and some Sand filters. The hardest part is removing the piston as the o-rings tend to expand with age and lock the piston in the valve - making it difficult to pull it out on occasion.
I usually will order the complete backwash kit in case I need the other o-rings for the handle part. Plus it is sometimes cheaper just to buy the complete kit:
Hayward Kit
Hayward Filter Slide Valve 2" SP410X Rebuild Kit
Pentair Kit:
Pentair PacFab 2" PVC Slide Valve O-ring Kit
Jandy Kit:
Zodiac R0442100 Rebuild Kit Replacement for Zodiac JandyBackwash Valve

I use a citrus based biodegradable solvent to loosen up the valves. It rinses away clean once the valve is removed and makes the removal process a breeze. Just a couple sprays into the valve after getting the cap loose and the twist and a little working it pulls right out, skipping the hernia. I would have thought you would use something. Thanks for the great videos.

@@SPL Definitely, haven't broken a handle or piston since I started using it. It breaks down the old grease and lubes everything up really nice. Then I just flush it with a hose before replacing and lubing new o-rings. Easy peasy. Been watching your vids for years. Also I made a "hole in one basket" on my bench a couple years back then found yours when I Googled it. I've bought and installed a dozen or so already. Respect.

I was getting sand blowing back into the pool every time after I backwashed. Not a lot, but a good 3-5 secs on sand right after startup - but only after I backwashed. Cleaning up and re-lubing the O rings solved this problem for me.

For anyone that needs to change the small oring on the shaft, find a tiny drill bit that fits inside the roll pin at the top of the handle. Fits tight. Insert the shank of the drill bit, not the cutting side. Once it is as far as you can insert it, get a pair of vise grips and clamp down hard on the pin with the drill bit shank inside. You will need to gently pry on the vise grip jaws so that they start to pull the roll pin out. You may want to try and rotate the pin a little bit before you start. The pin is over an inch long so you may need to get another closer bite with the vise grips as it comes out some. Pry evenly and gently so you don't break anything. Take your time. It will be tight. It's going to take some effort to pull it out. Go slow and don't let it bend over. Keep it straight while it comes out. I used a strong bodyclip remover to pry on the vise grips.

@@SPL I did have a real problem attempting to replace the smallest gasket, as it's pretty obvious that this assembly is really not made to be taken apart, but rather replaced, otherwise, they would have used something like an allen screws instead of solid pins. Anyway, as my leak was steaming from the handle gasket I finally decided to apply some silicone caulk to that area, and to my delight there was no further leak. I know the replacement is just about $51, but if I can hold it off a bit longer I certainly will. Peace....

Thanks a ton. Easy Peeeeeezy Except that Leslies Pools sold me 4 rings for other filter brands. Sucks. Would buy orings on line for your correct product and you will get the correct rings. Pentier orings ... Leslies sold me hayward and another . I didnt notice but trusted what they told me i needed. Usually when I get a leak i cant wait for on line because of water loss. There’s a video on RU-vid by Steve the Pool Guy showing how to remove the O-ring by uncoupling the assembly from the filter, snipping the O-ring through the side port, while grabbing it with a needle nose pliers, twisting the piston shaft assembly slowly, which feeds out the O-ring through the side port that attaches to the filter. Seems like a much easier solution.
@SPL

You can usually muscle it off. Some of the older filters when you go to turn the plastic nuts - can crack. As a rule they are more or less a permenant fixture on the equipment. But Mikey's Quick Couplers can save the day in that case. I've seen that technique used in extreme cases. Good tip!

Thanks for your video. It gave me a couple of dry runs through. When I saw your hernia maker I thought dish soap. Sure enough mine was tight. I got it open enough to squirt in some soap. I wiggled it around a little, then it pulled out like lifting an empty milk carton in the refrigerator. Also I'm glad I saw your lube for putting it back together. I tried my dry and ended up making a trip for the lube. It works slick for the moment.

Thanks for reply. I got it. I bent a nail. Lowered it in hole with needle-nose pliers. Took giant slot wrench I have (same pair you have I saw on a video), put it perpendictor under valve handle. Bent arms 90 degrees and pulled up with arms/shoulders instead of relying on strength of my hands. Came up first try. Using galvanized nail as cotter pin til I can get stainless steel one. Pulled 3-4 inch nail thru then bent it around shaft.

Thank you for this video. I'm glad it was a fight & how you dealt with it. Mine was a fight too. Normally, I would've feared I'd cause more damage, given up & called a repairman, but seeing what you went thru, I expected it. I did spray WD-40 in there to lube it up enough to get it out. (it was really snug in there) I cleaned it all up really good, lubed up the o-rings, etc. and put it all back together. Works nice. I think you saved me a couple hundred dollars. (repairman wanted $85 just to come out and give me a quote, + big $$ on parts and labor) Thanks!!!!

Easy workaround for hernia-causing stuck valve pistons: remove the filter by unscrewing the inlet and outlet unions, and then you can grab the stretched out O-rings from your view into those pipes. Grab them with a needle nose pliers or hemostat and cut them and you can pull out the O-rings easily. You can then lift out the piston with your pinkie! No broken backs or hernias! You were going to put new O-rings anyway, so why struggle with what you are throwing away?

Just a thought.... Could you use pump pressure to blow out the valve instead of straining to pull it out?
@SPL
@SPL 10 лет назад
xKmotx Some have tried that already. Not enough pressure builds up. I just pull and twist and eventually it comes out. Someone tried some liquid lube with little success as it needs to get in the o-ring area - which is expanded from wearing out.
@peteflynn3923

So mine is leaking on that little shaft oring, and to replace that one, you need to remove the handle and that split pin won’t compress. I’ve used the largest pliers, lots of force, and can’t get it out. I was really hoping you’d do the whole job. It’s blocked on the back side by that shroud, so you can’t tap it out with a drift.
@SPL

When they start leaking from there I just install a new piston. Chances are it is pretty old and when you go to pull it up it will snap off. A new piston is around $50.00

When I want to get my filter canister opened, I just turn on the switch for a few seconds and the pressure builds up and pops it open. Do you think that might work when trying to get the backwash piston out? If you pressurize the system, do you think it would help to pop a stuck piston upwards?

Thank you for the videos! I have a "hernia" backwash valve. It wouldn't go back to the lock position when I backwashed today (I pushed and twisted as much as I thought was reasonable). Is that typically an o-ring replacement? Or does that usually mean a valve replacement?
@SPL
@SPL 7 лет назад
I would unscrew the top and pull it out.It could just be bad o-rings - one maybe split causing it to seize up,. Once out see if the piston looks okay to reuse. If it feels wobbly or unstable replace the entire piston.

If it is a DE filter you can take the grid assembly out and then from inside the tank break the o-ring with a pair of needle nose plyers. The expanded oring is probably the issue. Or untwist the nt on top and try to wiggle the piston free.

Please, any ideal to remove the piston would be awesome. We bought the house going on two years ago. I have had to replace the piston valve three times in the two years. Each time I try and flush the system, it is always sticking and hard to turn and pull up. Each time I have replace the piston, I get a whole new unit, which is costly, but I put a very liberal amount lube on all the O rings. I do not understand why this continues to happen. Any ideal?

If it is DE filter you can access the remaining piston part from inside the filter. If you take the grids out you will see the backwash valve from the inside. At this point you should be able to push it up.

Michael Schwartzwald That is a lot more difficult. You will need to cut the filter out and remove all of the grids and bottom manifold. Then unbolt the rotor valve and install a new one. If it is just dripping from the backwash pipe itself I suggest just installing a ball valve at the end and closing it off and just opening it when you need to backwash. The replacement will cost around $400 of you hire someone. The part is a couple hundred dollars.

Anyone have an answer for why my new piston, with new O-rings, and well lubed with Magic Lube, is so hard to rotate to move into backwash mode, or back to filter mode, is so friggin hard to turn. Once turned (rotated) is moves pretty easily into the either up, or down position. But the rotation is so hard. Replaced the piston assembly because it broke trying to rotate to do a backwash. So I'm confused why it is so hard. It is also a fairly new (2 years) Valve itself. I removed and replaced the entire thing 2 years ago, and has always been difficult to rotate.
