Filter comparison test between MMG, KOMA & PITTSBURGH

I wanted to hear the differences between these three filter. On first they seem to have a lot of similarity and as I didn't found any similar comparison on the net I decided to do one myself. I already had the Koma svf-201 and the Pittsburg Filter but not the Make Noise MMG so first (finally an excuse) I had to get one! :)
Bear in mind that this comparison shows just one of thousands possibilities to use the filters so don't judge them by watching this video alone. The test shows all the filters in LP mode and they are not crazy modulated or overdriven. This is deliberate as I wanted to hear the musical and not the "special effect" side of the filters. The sound generated comes from a Doepfer A110 (saw out). The A155 act as the sequencer for the notes and trigger out to open the filters. The trigger are fed to the filters cutoff CV in via the Intellijel Quadra so I could adjust the release time of the trigger. No other envelope or VCA in the audio path. The audio was recorded direct to DAW via a compressor (with mild compression) just to even out the slight difference in sound level.
After playing around with these filters for some days now it's clear that the filters are equally good in their own ways, both sonically and functionally, and they're all going to stay in my case for a long time!

I noticed you had the input gain for the MMG in OVERLOAD for the entire test (as indicated by the RED LED). This will greatly affect the strength and sound of the Resonance. The acid for the second half was rad.

RU-vid and wigglers in general need more module videos of this quality. Great work!

What a GREAT demo. These are so awesome. Funny thing is, just listening to this I suddenly desperately needed to figure out how to afford one of the first two, and then you demoed the Pittsburgh, which I have... and which I've never quite swept like that... and realized I was just fine for now with that one. Still, they are different and the victors in the others give them something else. Incredible work.

All three sound wonderful. The Pittsburgh sounds great and is a terrific value. Same with the MMG. The Koma from what I've been reading has unique features. Cool video and great sounding system, thanks.

koma creates beautiful raspy timbres and resonances, has a flat low end moving into a more belchy section and then becoming more and more alive. for straightforward hicut-sweeps, it is probably the wrong filter for most people. but in the right combination it starts to shine a very special light. i just tested it in combination with a good analog osc and a mutable instruments warps, and can only recommend all you guys to do the same

MMG winning for me! Thanks, very good demo!

I used the Koma at Control in Brooklyn. When I started it up, I had unknowingly left the 'amp' knob all the way up, so it made the loudest noise possible. Now, every time I see that filter, I get a visceral feeling in my stomach.

Very good comparison. I think it's been stated many times in the replies that each one has something special about them. And directly pointed out that the Koma is in it's own catagory. It would be really hard to choose just one but if someone knew what kind of sonics that they wanted to produce then you could probably choose one of them. It would be so easy to want all 3 for a broader musical pallet.

Very good comparation, we must know that KOMA: $319, MMG: $235 and PGH: $199. I like the three, but the PGH sine osc mode (that was not shown in this video) is a very cool feature. Thank you very nuch.

koma stays nice and beefy through to the end, but the res is a bit thin for my tastes. but the MMG has that nice colorful gnarly resonance through the highs and mids, but a weaker low end. pittsburg has a nice low end as well, and has a neat sing song vowely resonance feel. all great! i'd probably take the koma since ripples fills the spot MMG would take. great video, really enjoyed it!

All being based on the state variable filter design (made famous by Oberheim ) it's no wonder they sound quite similar. Great demo

how do you know that? I suspect MMG is a derivative of buchla filters and I don't think schematics are avaiable for any of them

thank you for the most excellent demonstration, i will go for the MMG.. i think its quite similar to the Koma but less dirty.

Thanks! The Koma probably has the widest spectrum of the three and is not sonically far from the ms20 when close to self oscillation.

great demo! that Koma sounds really good - the others are nice as well, but that one stands out to me for some reason.

I would go for MMG if I had to pick, but again others 2 sound great for sonic exploration!

Surprised at the sound of the Doepfer actually - that's quite a nice thick saw sound. Koma, MMG then Pitsburg in that order for me.

OooooooWEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeOooooooooooo... Total Dr. Who flashback. ;) My Vote is for the MMG, very smooth. The Pitts sounds kinda cheap or thin to me, but at the same time was TB303-esque. The Koma gives off a nice "Ball bearing in a tin can" sound that ticked my brain stem. :)

Hehe, if you put a red light on it of course I want it to light! :D Jokes aside, I was actually trying to match the gain drive of the svf201, which has crazy amount of overdrive even at low input gain (good or bad)...

The noise you hear is most likely from the youtube compression. I can't hear any in real life.

Yeah, that is a tough question and all three complement each other perfect! The Pittsburgh is closest to the classic Roland sound and the Koma more towards the MS20. MMG is somewhere in between with a really nice snappy attack. I often find myself using the MMG for the snappiness in series with one of the other two. But if I had to chose one to a dessert island today I chose the Make Noise MMG. Ask me again a year from now and I'll probably give you a different answer! :)
