Here's another one of NASCAR's most famous moments as shown live and in full, the final 3 laps of the 1989 Holly Farms 400 at North Wilkesboro. A caution with less than 10 laps left set up a 3 lap dash to the finish between Ricky Rudd, Dale Earnhardt, and Geoff Bodine for the win. Clip includes the final restart through the finish live as well as replays, the confrontation between the two crews, interviews with Richard Childress and Ricky Rudd, and the unedited Dale Earnhardt interview. This tangle is one of the factors that cost Earnhardt the 1989 Winston Cup.

I love how geoff bodine didn't have to wait for the network to get back from a five minute commercial break. He just pulled into victory lane and got of the car. Ahhhh the good ole days

One of the best things about then was the cautions weren't put out for everything- The car was in the wall and they stayed green because he re fired the engine. Compare to now where they throw the caution if there is a cigarette butt on the track.

Bob Jenkins “the voice of Winston Cup” May he Rest In Peace; haven’t watched NASCAR since about 2004;but followed closely from 79 until then. Had to come listen to this after hearing of his passing. Old fashioned NASCAR. Hillin spins and they don't throw a bogus yellow to "set up" a good finish and get a good finish anyway. A car wins carrying tobacco sponsorship-Chewing tobacco! A driver in victory lane with no shirt on. Imagine that happening now. Earnhardt tries to be the intimidator, coming down on Rudd, expecting Rudd to get scared and back off, but Rudd don't chicken out. Earnhardt whines, bitches & curses on TV & doesn't get fined. And-get this folks-a FULL HOUSE!

Earnhardt may have come out on the short end of this one and lost the 89 Championship as a result, but that's how he raced. He wasn't going to play it safe just to secure points. He went out to win every race like it was his last. That's real racing. He lost this title, but he wound up winning 4 Cups in the next 5 years. So you win some and lose some. This was the prime era of Nascar. There was no need to have Chase to the Cup. The Cups were already tightly contested as shown in this race or in 1992. Can't beat this era.

Dale was gunning for the championship. Rudd was gunning for the race. Rudd recently told a story about how there was a near riot in the crowd with DE fans vs Everyone else (50/50). On the drive out of the track he laid down in the back of the car he was riding covered up by a blanket!

@@DupontandLowesWarrior I was at the North Wilkesboro race when Earnhardt beat Harry Gant to stop his win 4 race win streak. One drunk good ole boy was raging as everyone was walking out, screaming at the top of his lungs - "F*ck Dale Earnhardt, Dale Earnhardt sucks!" Me and my best friend that was there with me still laugh about that dude to this day every year. Poor dude was mad as hell at Dale. LMAO.

Looked like neither gave and you want to hold the bottom line down tight and Rudd wasn't having it.

Or how about the time he wrecked Terry Labonte after Labonte passed him clean with a couple of laps to go at Bristol. He was one of the worst sports Nascar ever had. Now, Tony Stewart carries that banner proudly.

It really wasn't a clean pass by Labonte but unlike what the other guy said, Labonte didn't "bump him out of the way". Terry was already beside Dale when contact was made. He just slid up into Dale while making the pass Very light contact.

I was there that day. Earnhardt fans were throwing beer cans out onto the track after Dale got spun on the final lap!

They Probably Did That Again with Pocono 2000

What so many people seem to forget, is that, Earnhardt's graciousness; Earnhardt was driving defensively, by blocking for Michael Waltrip and Little E; is what ended up costing him his life. If he hadn't driven on the defensive, he would still be alive today. His unselfishness, led to his own mortality. If he had been driving to to win that Daytona 500, in 2001, he probably could've done it, but NO; he knew that, both Michael and Jr., had more to gain by winning that race than he did. I know he wanted to win an 8th championship; but after watching him for so many years, as I had, I could easily tell; with about 10-laps to go, he was going to be perfectly content running 3rd that day.

Earnhardt wasn't blocking for Waltrip and Jr he was trying not to get passed. He was a couple hundred yards behind them and nobody around him would have caught them. Some TV talking head said that and everybody believed it.

Dale Earnhardt loved to lay a bumper to people but he was such a fu**ing baby when things didn't go his way. Anolther good example of that was when Mayfield nudged him out of the way at Pocono in the late 90s. He flipped Mayfield off after that. Such a class act that guy was.

I know I'm replying to an old comment, but just for anyone who read the above comment, Dale actually got alongside Mayfield to tell him he was number 1. That's what Dale said in his post race interview, anyways. 🤣

Dale Earnhardt never tried to kill Rusty Wallace. There's a video on here somewhere of the aftermath of Wallace's wreck in 1993 at Talladega. Earnhardt drove down to the scene of the accident, got out of his car, and went over to Rusty's car to ask Rusty if he was okay and see if he could be of any help to the rescue workers. I swear, some people are idiotic!

Won't argue that Dale isn't great but to say all he had to beat is other drivers is false. Petty outspent many teams but so did Dale. RCR was a premiere team back then and was spending tons for technology, best parts and crew. You make it sound like he took a two year old car laying out in the woods and won the Daytona 500 with it. Many people think Pearson was the best driver in NASCAR. He didn't win 7 titles but didn't run for titles much. Many years he only ran half the season.
@EclecticHillbilly
@EclecticHillbilly 6 лет назад
Pearson only ran for the title 4 times and he won it 3........and he has the highest win percentage of any of them. He was the best driver I ever saw and Cale was just a tad behind him.

Oh yeah, god forbid anyone ever challenge the great Dale Earnhardt. But like I said before, it was ok for him to intentionally wreck someone. Darrell Waltrip was far from a stroker and he didn't respect him enough to race him clean. He had to wreck Terry Labonte at Bristol for a win too. But again, it's ok for Dale to do it, right?

This kind of gives me Kyle Busch vs. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. vibes from the North Wilkesboro All-Star Race 35 years later. Earnhardt in '89, Kyle Busch in '24, the one common denominator is, that they were both driving for RCR, 35 years apart from one another.
