But that's always been the case with Apple. Just look at iPhone vs Android. The same comments are made when those are both discussed. "Cool, you can move your apps anywhere now. Android had that 10 years ago." I mean it took them 14 years to make Calculator for iPad. But you gotta admit, when they did, they hit a grand slam. I think the Magnetic Timeline and the Browser were a grand slam but, yeah, they haven't hit once since then. They're due. And here's to hoping FCP 11 knocks it outta the park. Sorry for all the sportsball talk.

100%. A small Australian company that originally just sold capture cards is eating Apple’s lunch when it comes to video production. I do wish Apple would try to compete but they just don’t seem to care about professional users like they used to in the early 2000s. So sad.

The strange thing is, ive been dictating my texts to iPhone for 5 years! so THEY 100% have this technology. They could implement it within an hour if Timmy told them to!

If they did, they'd launch a new product and most likely call it Final Cut Studio. I made a video about it - it's a long shot, but not impossible. I'd be surprised but not shocked if Final Cut Pro 11 got a massive overhaul with features important to independent media and content creators and a Final Cut Studio app that blew DaVinci Resolve out of the water, especially when it comes to Spatial and Immersive storytelling. With the VisionPro, Apple's betting on this being the future of content consumption.

Nice video but I dropped FCP back when Apple decided to abandon the old platform which was industry leading and well on it's way to becoming the defacto industry editor for this new FCPX platform. So many features missing and continue to be missing and like many others moved over to Resolve. It's a shame as I loved my old FCP. Hopefully Apple will continue to develop this application but the release schedule is way to slow for me.

mmm I would do enhance and color first to do auto correction and establish a baseline then do custom color correction and/or add lut. I certainly wouldn’t want to do a lot of tedious work and then apply something and have it all changed on me. Thanks for the video 👍🏼

A few things I wish you did (Constructive feedback, i love your content, please don't take this personally): 1 - increase the UI size of your computer when you record videos so its easier to see. I have to go to full screen to watch your video because I can't see anything bc the UI is so small 2 - Go straight into it, don't linger so much in the beginning, get right into the sauce 3 - provide a quick summary in the beginning of the features and what's going to be covered. maybe a list of the items you're going to cover 4 - add more motion graphics and text animations throughout the video so i can follow along more easily 5 - add your face on the thumbnail so i know its your video when i see it on my timeline and don't skip over it

I’ll take a look at the UI sizing, etc. As far as the other notes… while I agree that those are best practices for a lot of content creators, that’s just not my vibe. I make my videos to feel like what it would be like if you were sitting at the desk with me and I was going over the updates with you. I get that not every viewer is going to enjoy that or find it engaging, but I’m not terribly concerned with that. When I watch RU-vid videos I tend to click out of videos that use a lot of the techniques you’re talking about - I just want to chill out with my Internet friends on RU-vid and hear them work through whatever it is they’re making a video about. Also, I typically use more animations but a big bug is occurring with FCP 10.8 that was preventing me from using them. More on that in an upcoming video… Again, appreciate you watching, and I applaud your diplomacy!

Thanks for stopping by, Tyler 🙌 I couldn’t agree more re: the color pipeline. I still goof up the order of adjustments when attempting to grade (as you can see in this demo). I used DaVinci Resolve for a while to edit my 35mm film scans (stills) that were scanned at a lab that uses a Blackmagic Cintel scanner (and scans in Log🤘) and the color pipeline / nodes workflow was soooooo much better (even for someone like me who struggled mightily with grading). Let’s hope FCP 11 sees an overhaul of all that… Or better yet the resurrection of ol’ Final Cut Studio 🎬 Oh, and thanks for making a great set of Canon LUTs👌

The scenarios where these Time Remapping algorithms are optimal often include action/sports contexts where optical flow simply wasn't good enough at interpolating well enough to prevent high levels of artifacting, blurring, etc. with high levels of remapping were needed with lower framerate footage. For example, filming a figure skater doing a Triple jump at 60 FPS and then slowing it down to 10% in a 30 FPS timeline. The rate of rotation is super-fast, so the algorithms need to be high quality in order to interpolate the frames well. This is something Resolve studio's Speed Warp excels at, and I still think it's the best on the market for this. If you're recording with 480-960 FPS high speed cameras, then it doesn't matter what algorithm you use. There are going to be so many frames that the software will barely have to interpolate anything, anyways. Always record at a higher frame rate if you think there is a chance you may want to Time Remap the footage. The Helicopter Scene is unusable for various reasons, and I'd have to re-record that. This improvement is fine for FCP. The biggest issue I have is that there still doesn't seem to be a way to automate it the way you can in Resolve Studio. Sometimes there are elements of the action that need more aggressive slowing than others, and it works best when you can ease in and out of those elements with Automation, vs. cutting the clip up into bits and then trying to manually adjust edge ramps. I do lots of this with sports footage and I don't consider FCP to be usable for me. This won't change that status quo. Resolve Studio also has better Video Stabilization, Video and Audio Noise Reduction, Tracking and Voice Isolation... and all of that is advantageous for this type of work I do and footage I have to work with (due to the manner some of it is recorded (tripod vs. handheld) and the venues in which it is recorded).

We got nothing! They truly hate us, went online to their communities, and when you put in auto captions, they delete every single post that has anything to do with it. How do I know? Because after not finding a single one, I made one and it was deleted 10 minutes later.

If the Notes app has it now... we'll get it in FCP. Apple just needs time to do it in their own, special, "We did it better than everyone else" way. I don't think they hate us... they just love figuring out the tech and then spending as long as it takes to make the customer experience of that tech as magical as possible.

Before the update if I double klicked on a color correction in the video inspector it jumped directly into the effect. Now after the update it always wants me to rename the color correction/effect. Does anybody know how I can change this double klick setting?

There is a LOT you didn't mention and should warn people about! After the upgrade I loaded an old project that was finished. Made a duplicate before I started. Nearly all mu music I used turned red (missing file) all the crossdisolve I used turned red (missing file) cross dissolve has dissapeard from 10.8!! All the text I used turns red, disappeared from 10.8 as-well!! So a finished project changed in another 7 hours work, to get it going again!

After consulting the Apple helpdesk (thank you so much for the exelent help!) i found out it is VERY important that BEFORE you update to version 10.8, you should update the MacOS to version 17.5!!! After i did that i put back my old version of FCP, then ran the update 10.8 and now everything is back the way it should be! Not one "missing file" errors anymore.

It’s impossible to know everything that could go wrong with a software update which is why I said at the beginning of the video to back up your older version of FCP and duplicate your Library (or Libraries). I had one significant issue with FCP while editing this video and have been troubleshooting it, including updating to the latest version of Sonoma to rule that out as the root cause.

The new AI driven Light and Color feature is great and fast. On my M1max a 4 Minute 4K 60fps timeline took 3 minutes to render. I already color corrected it, but te AI feature did a better job.

The more videos I watch about it the more impressed I am! Especially if you're dealing with Rec.709 footage straight out of camera or if you have a good conversion LUT you use and then use Enhance Light & Color. It did a good job with my clips even though I still wanted to tweak them just a bit afterward.

I love your videos Matthew but this Final Cut Pro update is more a “bug fixes”, nothing special about it. For me is very clear that Apple has abandoned Final Cut. And I don’t see any intention to compete with Davinci Resolve, or at least bring some important improvement.

Appreciate you diplomacy! I'm just a bit surprised that so many in the FCP community think Apple has abandoned FCP after making a dedicated app for iPad and a new camera app with its name. I get that a lot of high-end pro features aren't present, but it's abundantly clear to me that Apple is fully committed to Final Cut Pro... just not in a way that makes it a cooler, more elegant version of DaVinci Resolve. I totally get the overall frustration though for those of you who wants even some obvious pro features.

@@matthewTobrien On second thought, I am pretty sure that we will never have a Final Cut Pro of the same level as Davinci Resolve. And the reason is very obvious. Apple wants to offer a video editing program that can be used on all its devices. Blackmagic offers a professional program that meets the needs of any professional. The big difference between these two programs is the hardware that is needed. It is true that Davinci offers very professional functions, but for everything to work very smoothly, you need very powerful hardware. On the other hand, Final Cut can be used even on a MacBook Air, obviously with some limitations. If Final Cut would have professional functions such as those of Davinci, surely it can only be used fluidly only with equipment with Max and Ultra processors. In this way Apple would charge a large part of its low-end sales, MacBook Air, Pro, mini, iMac... So I'm sure it's not about helplessness on the part of Apple, I think it's more about another strategy of making money. And we all know very well that money is much more important for Apple than the user.

@@matthewTobrien About Final Cut Camera, I installed it yesterday, I tested it and I deleted it from my iPhone, since I don't like to have apps on my iPhone that I don't use. And I will continue to use Blackmagic Camera, which is far superior to what Final Cut Camera offers. I see it useful only if you want to use it with an iPad and a multicam setup, with several iPhones. In that case, I find it very useful.

If Apple hadn't released FCP for iPad and Final Cut Camera I would have definitely covered this update with another "Meh."

Apple is rarely first with new features. I have a hunch we're just seeing the tip of Apple going deep in AI. As per WWDC, there's a lot of AI coming to Sequoia and I think we're going to see some major FCP updates post the release of that OS. My guess is it'll be FCP 11 early next year (end of Spring in typical Apple fashion). We might see a 10.9 interim (end of year). Apple isn't dumping in all the AI in FCP that people are demanding because it will happen through the OS. People need to understand that this is how Apple handles its ecosystem. People who think Apple is abandoning FCP don't understand how Apple works. They forgot the update between legacy FCP6 and 7 was disappointing and there was a long period before FCPX came out. I think they may have learned from those marketing and development mistakes and they're now making a transition (long and slow) to the "10-year plan" for FCP. WWDC should be an indication of where they're going with the ecosystem. There are also indications in iPadOS and FCP for iPad as well as FCP Camera. They'd have no reason to enter that market with Resolve, Lumafusion, or CapCut unless they were laying a foundation. AI will be impressive when it does arrive in my opinion.
