A pretty big oversight in your discussion is the ipad final cut not being able to read media from an SSD like the other editing apps already can. They may update in the future, but nobody is off loading prores or Red footage to the ipad after a full day of production. In your scenario you'll be off the train before everything is copied over. At that point just plug SSD in to work station at home. Luma Fusion and DaVinci read SSD on ipad.
It’s not an “oversight” all the tech channels got bribes from Apple to stay on script and parrot the same propaganda talking points and ignore the obvious faults and subscription fees lol.
Well It hasnt been out for "a while" but yeah. Surprised MKBHD team seems to be all FCP and PP. Not that we are arrogant enought to think that the world should switch to DR
I really hope they don't ditch the one-time-purchase on macs, they should at least keep this option for those who want, many apps do it today, like Photomator
Same. I'd really rather pay one expensive lump-sum up-front than be nickel-and-dime'd for life. Also I hope Affinity releases a Final Cut / Premiere competitor soon. I believe it's their next big project though that may have just been a rumor.
Literally they would just be giving Da Vinci Resolve millions of dollars. Remember the only reason they get away with it on iPads is the locked down App Store. On Mac they would get demolished because anyone can download whatever they want online.
@@inshal6420 It’s not just Final Cut but Logic as well. And I disagree with them making no money because of Final Cut or Logic users, because as you say that is the only thing keeping them on Mac Hardware which they spend thousands of dollars on in a regular purchase cycle. So they are actually going to backfire in their strategy if they do this. And the irony is that the reason many people were recommending Apple hardware was these one time purchase pro level apps. It’s very interesting, but essentially they will not have any legitimate reason to stay in the ecosystem either. The exception would be the new VR coming out. So that might represent the pivot in the market they desire.
I use Lumafusion on my Fold 4 on the go, then I just plug it in to my desktop setup at home and continue editing in Samsung DeX on my 34" 1440p ultrawide. One-time purchase, no less.
Guys I love the chemistry you share between yourself, it clearly shows you Understand each other, that's the best part of this Video. Love the Video though
I have been following Marques for a very long time. I could never afford an apple mac book or ipad pro. I know everything about them though because of him. Thanks for being someone positive and informative.
You guys have asked some excellent questions that NEED to be answered at WWDC, even if you have to take someone hostage. (and subscriptions are EVIL, whether its software or a BMW's heated seats; I dropped PS and went Affinity at that point)
Here is the case for software subscription: software is not like a physical product that you buy once and then own. With software people expect continuous updates and new features. If you would write an app today and never touch it again it would become unusable in a few years. So developers need to continually invest time into their software therefore I believe its fair to pay them regularly. The same way you pay for music streaming or your internet provider.
as a user - no, it doesn't seem offer a seamless "start one project on the mac/ipad, then port/export the project over to your ipad/mac to continue working" or vice versa, it's very much a nerfed experience, especially with the lack of external SSD support.
You can set auto save on Premiere Pro at 3 seconds minimum. And you can set to save multiple projects for you to turn to a specific timeline in the project.
Unfortunately only limited plugin support and I don't know, if you will have to pay again for iPad versions of those plugins that you already own as VSTs.
@@ianconklinmusic I didn't even know Garage Band had third party plugins. I just looked into it, you're right. Logic on iPad will have all the Garage Band compatible plugins. You can definately work with those plugins, but coming from a desktop setup, almost none of my essential plugins are available and I highly doubt every manufacturer will code those again for the small fraction of people using Logic on the go.
I feel like one of the main reasons why Apple has the subscription-based version of Final Cut Pro on iPad is to get more people familiar with it and buy it on Mac outright with it being the education edition or just the $299 standalone version (I would recommend the education edition just because you're getting the full version of 5 pro apps from apple) the 5 apps are Final Cut Pro, Motion, Logic Pro, Compressor and Mainstage and your saving so much money doing it this way ) the link for the education edition. I also wish at some point they would add the other pro apps that they have Motion, Compressor and Mainstage to the iPad, but I guess that it won't happen just because maybe the iPad can't handle it properly like the MacBooks can. But all of this is just my thoughts and opinions.
DaVinci can slim down their app to make it useable on non M iPad but Apple couldn’t do the same to FCP. Weird, considering that DaVinci is more complicated than FCP.
The whole thing with plugins is the issue with Logic on iPad, too. Huge, essential parts of my music workflow involve 3rd party plugins, and it's like that for pretty much every producer.
The M1 ipads are litrally a laptop in a small way. They are powerful than most laptops the only downside is that you may not be able to run other high end programs that aren't supported yet
Final Cut on the ipad makes it the single device that you need to produce and polish up the content. You have a decent cam, now the app and a decent sized screen.
Light projects Maybe. The M2 chip is kinda powerful, but for real work it gets hot and thermal throttles. I have a big file I’m working on in Affinity designer and although it performs well on my M1 iPad Pro , it’s hot! There is no lag, but to combat that, every time I rotate or zoom the layers keep blurring. For film editing this must be even worse. Once you have a real project on it. Not an assembly edit with some cute transitions. I wouldn’t recommend an iPad as an only computer. Hell I wouldn’t recommend a Mac Mini or any entry level M chip for actual professional work. You can punch out a small job, but anything substantial I wouldn’t bother with.
Actually the „one month usage” is a thing for me as a student. I study medicine, so I don’t use finalcut pro regularly. But once in a while we have to produce some video. For those weeks/months it would be quite amazing.
Just use Davinci resolve. I've been using it on a windows computer since a year without any issues. It did crash once or twice especially when I was editing multicam 4k footage of 3 cameras, but other than that it's been going great.
People waaay to hung up on this pro label. Can’t get Finalcut pro on your iPhone pro either 😂 It’s a pro secondary device. Or a surprisingly good portable art device, and we have had pro art apps on it for years. Clip Studio, Affinity suite, and iOS first apps like Callipeg, Toonsquid, Procreate are also pretty pro level. As pro you can get on a 13” screen. It’s not replacing anyone’s 24” Cintiq screen. RU-vidrs need to learn, film editing isn’t the only pro activity one does on their device😂
I’d love to see Marques do an auto focus video shot on iPhone and edited on iPad. I feel like Final Cut on iPad is best suited to people who are primarily shooting on iPhone
Yes iMovie does have Feature Parity. And no plugins. GarageBand for iPhone and iPad doesn’t play the stuff I do on my Mac. I doubt it’s going to be a Full Version. They should upgrade iMovie and call it Final Cut Lite because that program isn’t aging well against third party options. People buy this stuff to work up to Final Cut and Logic as well as specifically for it and Apple has forgotten they have a large amateur user base.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Final Cuts projects made are version specific. I'm pretty sure that's how it was with Garageband, which is why I returned the m1 ipad I got.
@@s4l0con it has nothing to do with that cause if you know... well you havent paid for this program for years. its simple to get more money from the same customers forever.
About crashes and lost documents - why don't you use document auto-versioning? that should be handled at filesystem level, so you can always scroll back in time. right? no fear of being unable to lose hours of work due to file corruption. But yeah, maybe I'm missing a thing there...
Apple could have improved the MAC FCP instead. They still have not addressed the letter from 100 pro editors from last year. the new FCP release today did not do that.
I hope someone's said that Premiere auto-save frequency can be adjusted in preferences. Can autosave every minute and multiple versions, which would put it above FCPX in that you can go back to previous versions if you add in a buggy plug-in. Also, the auto-saves folder is right next to the project folder, which Premiere asks for a location immediately when you make a new project. Not a fanboy, but can't have folks going around with inaccurate information.
3:33 - Not really 1:1 but iMovie on the mac at one point use to be more advanced and was later made simpler UI wise so sure? under the hood mac iMovie is way more powerful. Also wanted to mention, that with sideloading, maybe it will be easier to find final cut extensions for the iPad
re Premiere... just change the frequency of your auto saves in the preferences. It's a bit of a non issue IMO and it's certainly not like you lose 4 hours of stuff.
I think having both payment options would be ideal. I know some apps have that, where you can pay per month or pay the big cost upfront and just have it for perpetuity. I think this would perfectly work for it too. Having both options allows people to try it or cancel, or for committed people, just pay one cost. Probably just a way to squeeze as much money out of customers as possible. But even then, it would take, what, 4-5 years for the cost to outweigh? That’s a long time tbh.
No you really are not understanding why subscription is always bad. You understand 5$ is the introduction right? Same with Netflix originally. Now it’s 18$ a month. Adobe used to be one time payment. Now it’s 60$ a month for life. It’s not about what the fee is now. That’s just so people don’t complain. No laws prevent them from just charging 100$ a month to use your iPhone or iPad apps if this continues.
@@ghost-user559you can’t compare Netflix to these Apple apps. Heck they make their own movies and tv shows. That costs loads of money. They’re just breaking even. They just had a small library of 3rd party movies that was usually rotating when it was $5. Not the same as all of these apps you see now that are straight up extortionist
My nail in the coffin on this for me (relative to something like DaVinci Resolve) is the External SSD editing, 1. I hate any artificial limitations that may be attempting to influence me to have to cough up more cash for a larger internal SSD and 2. if I can't easily switch between the Mac and the iPad for projects, it kind-of defeats their intent to position the iPad as a "supplemental" editing machine when you're away from your Mac. I mean Apple clearly doesn't want the iPad to be your main editing rig, but if you're going to force me to use a more limited version of a program that offers little benefit over its full-version MacOS counterpart, don't build in limitations that prevent me from hopping between machines.
It’s a good start point but it doesn’t justify the price yet. Da Vinci Resolve for iPad have external SSD support and all the desktop app features as well. On LumaFusion you can edit and export ProRes. I think that Apple is trying to force people to buy iPads with more storage. I hope it will get more updates soon.
Just move to Resolve. To me it seems Final Cut Pro for iPad is for non professional or people starting off. Or just to start a project. Probably great for social media and RU-vidrs.
I’ve used photoshop since the beginning. The price was always high. At the end, it was around $750 and about $600 for an upgrade every 18 months to two years. Believe me folks, it was not a bargain when compared to the subscription. With the full subscription for everything, it’s less than $60 a month. That’s a far better price than photoshop itself was. This is $5 a month, but you only have to pay when you need it. I see some people mindlessly hating subscriptions. But in a number of ways they’re better. The way Apple is doing it, it’s much cheaper than buying the app.
It is so frustrating that people who are supposed to be professionals, don’t know basic things about software like Premiere. You can set how often and how many auto saves want in the main preferences menu it’s called auto saves.
@@Feefa99 fair enough, but what if they add like a "pro" version of the app, that you need to pay for it, if you don't own the app on desktop, and that way, they get their money for that app and the users get all the features that they want
Can you use external drives or is this only for footage imported or shot with the iPad? Space is an issue as usual. The drawing tool is not truly a drawing tool. As an animator/designer I need more control and more usage options otherwise I'll stick to doing that kind of thing on other apps.
It already has photoshop and illustrator, which are pro apps aimed at graphic designers, who are professionals, which is sufficient enough to call it a pro device. You can't expect a full fledged professional video editing software to work on a handheld tab to call it a pro device. imovie is there for a tab.
I don’t think apple will add plug in, unless they release another feature version at the next silicon release. When you consider apple history when it comes to mobile apps… Minor updates and no third party plugins unless they bought the company that makes them
are you guys nuts? yes it is not true autosave like fcpx, but you can set exactly how often premiere will autosave your project, you want every other minute? you can have it, just go to the settings. The amount of autosaves - the backlog amount can also be set too. All you need is to go to the settings and set it. You can't just kinda rant on the default behaviour because you don't know other
I think talking about red footage first really takes away the relatability. I’d mention it of course but jumping straight into that issue separates you from the common person.
The common person should probably be using iMovie. Once you graduate past that level of editing, pro features are just part of the discussion. Real working professionals will touch pro gear at some point, even if they’re not rich enough to actually cash out on a personal RED. I’m not even a videographer and I had to edit RED footage once for a project. It’s more common than you think.
So no mention of what this means for young creatives who will be shooting on their iPhone or DSLR cameras. I don't know that this will be a game changer for quality but it will certainly be more accessible for lower budgets and budding artists.
Adobe's subscription model is terrible. Yearly subscriptions require you to pay the balance of the year if you choose to cancel during your term. It's pretty terrible to pay for a month of Adobe when you haven't used it for that month.
For actual pro users it's kind of a paid beta right now. If you're new to FCP you won't know what isn't there and I think you will really like what is. Cemented workflows will suffer some growing pains. Pro level workflows will still need to use both or abandon some tools/plugins/cameras to enable full use of the app on the device. I haven't seen it being used on multiple screens via iPad - for me I need a large screen. If apple makes a 17 inch iPad, I'm in.
My issue is, iPadOS sucks at large file handling. Tried to move 5GB of raw photos from SD card to iPad Pro to upload to Lightroom and files app basically crashes and locks up. There's no progress indicator, nothing. No clue when it crashed, just give up after 15 mins. Ok so maybe try copying from SD card to Google drive instead. Even worse. The OS and apps running on it are still too weak from a professional perspective. It may as well be a phone.
@@magic2253711 I know, I’ve been using lumafusion for a while now. I was actually excited to have soundtracks and effect in the same app and not having to import stuff to it everytime. Who knows, maybe there will be some further updates in time :)
Even just as a hobby with editing, there’s no way I can use my 2022 11Pro over my 2012 MacBook. Just no way. ALSO: Are any other Mac heads having airplay issues?
That’s funny I don’t use my M1 Max MacBook for any video editing lol 😂 I use IPad Resolve for every project mainly paid ones. I can’t work on a device that’s not touch screen it feels dumb.
I can't believe you guys have missed this. You are supposed to be tech savvy. Yes, Apple dua mention at the websites that plugins are coming in the future and they specifically mention motionvfx. You build a chanel on your skills on technology field and miss such a minor detail?
