Sylvia Sims was an excellent actress, only yesterday I enjoyed her great performance in ' Ice cold in Alex ' on Talking pictures TV. Hadn't seen it in years and once again I was thoroughly impressed by it. I know I'm very late in this regard, but I wanted to add my own r.i.p Sylvia 😢
What her downfall shows, not just in reference to her but anyone who has been in power for a long time, leaders can get complacent. They think that they can rely on the past to remain in power. History is not made in the past, but in the present and the future
Brilliant observation and a fantastic description of the time. Things rarely change,. People living on past glories and don't know when time has overtaken them.
She was the smartest one around. Perhaps she became too arrogant. That’s a possibility. Here in the USA we have politicians who have been in office for all of their lives. At least she did something with the time she served. Winston Churchill as the greatest wartime, Prime Minister of Great Britain. Margaret Thatcher is the greatest peacetime minister of Great Britain. I hope I’m wrong, but I have a feeling we won’t see the likes of her again for 100 years.
@@charlieboy1701 well maybe, but we'll never know until we experience it. An underrated Prime Minister, in my view, is the man who's time in Office was bookended by Churchill, Clement Atlee. It was under his watch, for example, that Britain began to reconcile with its brutal history of colonialism, particularly in the Indian Subcontinent. Although in the case of the partition of India and Pakistan, it was far from perfect, paving the way for chaos and bloodshed, he did nonetheless pave the way for Britain to be more open to allow its colonial subjects to become independent. What's more, some of his policies, like the NHS (National Health Service) are revered institutions to this day. Even Churchill wasn't perfect, even for his day, his views regarding the British Empire were old fashioned. When the world was moving away from Colonialism, he refused to even consider the idea of Britain letting go of its empire
have to say that she knew the party rules all those years (re-election every year) and despite how she always said how ridiculous it was after 1990, she had all the previous decade to make a change. Of course though before 90 it suited her because each year previous it was a free headline for her to show how she was the boss. Unfortunately for her it came back to bite her
It was not a mandatory leadership election as it was only triggered if somebody chose to challenge her. As it happens she was only challenged twice in her 15 years as Conservative leader. The first time was in 1989 after she had already been PM for over 10 years and she won easily and the second time was by Heseltine in 1990.
Had Thatcher reorganized her government after that win over Heseltine, she still would have been heading the ship of state at No. 10 Downing Street had she saw the danger in front of her in terms of a Heseltine ministry. But her arrogance was what destroyed her power base, unfortunately. 😐
Thank god Heseltine didn’t succeed her. He’s be so bad bloody evil Neil “we’re alright” Kinnock would have won. I’d have shoot myself if that happened. Thank god it was Major…
Hardly surprising that a rabble of MP’s got shot of her. Churchill was well aware that the enemy was not in front of him but behind. Today’s spivvery of Tory MP’s are no different. Some things never change.
although its hard to hard to fulfil Margaret thatcher role i personally think that this actress done a decent job but still cant be compared to the actress in "the Falklands movie"
I agree but the age difference worked for me -- this actress was quite believable as Mrs Thatcher in her last days while Patricia Hodge was excellent as Mrs Thatcher in her prime, nine years earlier.
@@dariowiter3078 Maybe you should do your research before insulting people. You’re the one who looks an idiot BECAUSE Meryl Streep played Thatcher in the movie ‘The Iron Lady’. Whereas Patricia Hodge played her in the film ‘The Falklands Play’. How who looks a douchebag 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I remember that morning verey well, the night before I went to Ashton in Makerfield to visit a mate, he being a Labour supporter me being a Labour Activist. That night we went into every pup, all we talked about was what could or will happen ... we never exspected her to resign. My mate had a spare bedroom with a very comvertable bed .... That morning I was woken up by his screem downstars and him running up the stars shouting "She's Gone, She's Gone" on going home to Liverpool everyone was Jubilant I WAS NOT as I know that was the END of Labour's potential Election Victory ... I was RIGHT!.
The Thatcher character looks/sounds/behaves like Mrs Slocombe if Mrs Slocombe had gone from Grace Bros to the House of Commons. Amusing, but no resemblance to Margaret Thatcher.
She lost the support of her party. In the UK, more emphasis is placed on the cabinet being elected than the Political leader than say the US. Is she lost the support of her cabinet then that was that.
It was her duty to commission elections if she felt as a ceremonial head of the nation one can be concerned if the government of the day is doing the job right. With that said, 40 years after 1975, her private records and those of Prince Charles said that both the Prime Minister of Australia and their Governor General plead for help and constitutional advice regarding the disembowelment of their political situation ironically anchored in an American inspired legislative setup. They jointly figured something was not going right over there and it was not their problem to solve.
Well I have to say as much as my fellow brexiteers hate John Major because of the Euro issue he was GREAT PM in many ways and was Thatcherite economically. But forget that rn, cuz did you know he rejected the Euro. He is on the top list of “5 Britons who kept UK out of Euro”.
Well, what difference does it makes? From Brussels or via direct channel, All decisions are taken and imposed according to Washignton's desire (In the EU as well as the UK like wise) aren't they. What kind of indenpendance is "she" or "anynone" talking about???... all of them being, at the end of the day, a bunch of Puddles, competing to be Washington prefect's (Wether it's an british, french german or european breed) Decision on Voltage nomination on the hoovers? Really? Are they as stupid or completely incompetent? Combination of both really being the ultimate twat perfection of the state being!!!! Pathetic...
Prime Minister Thatcher did not deserve to lose her job like this. The only way she should have lost her job as PM is if she (ie - her Govt/Cabinet) lost a vote of no confidence on the floor of the House of Commons, and the Tories lost the ensuing General Election. The irony is she secured more votes than Heseltine, and yet she was the one who stood down! I sometimes wonder if the Tories have ever got over this traumatic period. Debate about her Govt's policies are for elsewhere.
the actor playing press secretary and rottweiler Bernard Ingham has him spot on! u have to ask - what has changed in the composition of the tory cabinet in last 30 years? still largely poshos it was always thus and always will be.
Well they clearly paid a high price (well deserved) for it because they were thrown in exile for 13 years after John Major's defeat in 1997. Perhaps if Margaret Thatcher had stayed on as prime minister, she might have lost the next general election, but at least then the party could have recovered and stated 'the Thatcher era is over, time for a renewal' and reformed itself the correct way. Instead there were too many wounds that didn't heal, and the party shot itself in the foot multiple times. Definitely an inglorious end to a wonderful prime minister.
I actually liked John Major he undid a lot of the bad things Thatcher did , he was a softer leader who listened but that was what was needed , and remember the economy bounce came very early in Labours reign meaning it was Majors govt that recovered it
Alba Productions Every politician eventually wears out their welcome. One thing rarely mentioned was this: only after Reagan and Thatcher left office did real economic sanctions get imposed on the apartheid regime in South Africa, finally bringing that regime to an end. That her and Reagan had both effectively blocked any genuine sanctions, keeping that regime in power much longer than it should have. It would also seem that Margaret Thatcher had lost the ability to listen. The weirdest thing I remember was her use in public of the “Royal We”, when announcing the birth of a grandchild. When anyone is in the kind of bubble that forms around a head of government (or state), unless they have top notch advisers, who feel confident to tell a head of government not what they want to hear, but what they NEED to hear, the Head of Government (State) eventually loses touch with their people.
I can watch Bruno Ganz as Hitler repeatedly. I can't watch Meryl Streep as Thatcher. I can watch this final chapter of Maggie maybe because its Sylvia Sims and I have little fan connection to her and the movie's structure is like Downfall. Thatcher brings to mind Elvis Costello's Tramp The Dirt Down.
Howe was so wet, and despite not liking Thatcher she was proved correct on Europe. Heseltine was equally as arrogant. Like Hitler at the end of the Reich.
LOL Correct on Europe, at a time when the UK economy is in freefall all because of the shrinking of the economy caused by Brexit was not factored in to economic choices and finally the financial markets forced project reality (aka project fear) to be accepted by Westminster even if some delusional Leave voters still refuse to see the truth
I find this drama farcical as it fails to mention the Poll Tax. It was this issued that terrified the Tories particularly as it resulted in people who had been out of work getting a taste what so called "Thatcherism" was all about.
WHere on earth did they find her.. Terrible delivery of the no no no speech....and wow, wasnt Thatcher right ??? Well, over 30 years later we still havent joined the single currency and given the choice FINALLY, the people ended up voting to leave the EU all together !!
It’s great to watch her humiliation in all its technicolour glory. She and her fellow zealots put millions out of work and finally her cabinet did the same to her.
I gave a ride to a lady in Arizona in 1976 and she was so polite when she got in my car, but about 10 minutes into our journey, she started to melt and her human skin fell off revealing an amazing black, shiny body with 6 legs and 2 tentacles coming out her head.. You see, she was a giant queen ant and she asked me to go live with her underground to help her start an ant colony and fertilize her eggs and I accepted.. We now have 22 wonderful children together.. Below is a family photo of us.. 🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜👸👨🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜
It's like Fayed vs Hamilton. You hate both sides so much that however it plays out, someone gets shafted. The satisfaction of it being BitchThatcher is just....mmmmmmwah!
