Full playthrough of FF1 on GBA, Souls of Chaos on video #2 - this one is the original game.
NOT a quick playthrough, more completionist. Bestiary and all items (except angel's ring & canoe) end of second video.
The GBA version is one of the easier ones, mostly due to MP instead of specific spell uses as well as including drops from enemies.
Though 15-puzzle was also in the original game, rewards were not as powerful (100 gil). The GBA version allows saving anywhere, instead of just inns (I used save-states in the recording for convenience and the random generator).

This game is sooo hard without a guide. Most of the time they don't tell you what do next or give a hint on where you should go.

Just talk to NPCs, they will give you plot hooks and lore bits that will give you direction. It's more like original D&D, not a storybook like the subsequent FFs. Not that the storybook style is wrong, i like em both.

Future games do a more "hold-your-hand" type of gameplay style, to provide more accessibility. In the old games though, you have to play a more active role when it's time to progress. The game will not hold your hand for the titles, especially FF I through III. That's why for newcomers, I always recommend the newer titles to start off with, then go backwards lol Personally, when I look at it from that perspective, it makes the challenges much more fun. When you play without a guide and beat it, it's a very rewarding feeling.

I played the hell out of this game as a kid! I only got as far as Astos but even that took me weeks and I already felt like that was an entire games worth of content

This looks way better than the NES version, and the PSP version looks even better than this! But if you don't have a PSP, this GBA version is the way to go and can easily be added to your SNES/NES classic.

You can play the PSP version on mobile phones using the play store or the app store.

Unless you play on an actual PS1, FF Origins is actually broken. For example you can't get past a certain point on FF2 on a PS3. There's also bonus content on the GBA version and later ports.

New Player it’s good but you should remember that this IS a remake of an nes game. There is a lot of stuff that can be cryptic or there will be times where you won’t know where to go so I do recommend you know your way around an rpg before you play this; if you’re trying to get into the final fantasy series though I recommend you play ff7 first

New Player In that case then sure, the game is honestly really good and if you already have some prior final fantasy knowledge it shouldn’t be too hard, the game isn’t too expensive nowadays either so I say go for it!
