This is great game, maybe not a masterpiece but still

The game is beautiful. The only thing that caused a major downfall to this title was the story.

So to ride the ship free roam you need the dlc, I have purchased the royal edition (which Includes all the dlc) and after a certain point in game when you go to altissia for the first time that's when you unlock the ship free roam. When you walk upto the ship which brought you to altissia It will give you an option to free roam

its from the ff14 crossover event. should be free. its in the duscae area in main game
