Final Fantasy 4 Pixel Remaster Graphic comparison - SNES/PSP/PC 

I forgot to mention that even though it's on the harder difficulty scale , it's not grindy. I comfortably gain levels by navigating the dungeons without needing to stop in order to power up

It's the best version of the game for me. The voice acting adds so much, and the difficulty is hard, but easy combat is the worst thing about most JRPGs, so it's an improvement.

Except the pixel remaster’s music

I kinda appreciate the janky PSX-launch-title-graphic aesthetics of the 3d version

@@Fuchsia_tude I never have. That era was a stepping stone for 3d graphics, but going back to it is always groan worthy.

@@cronoesify I dunno. Interesting things happen when you have an incredibly low poly count design constraint. That combined with low-res texturing makes the work a lot more similar to pixel art than any modern 3d modeling.

considering how easy they were, perhaps that's the point.

And you have the option for the original soundtrack as well.

Imagine if we had a DQ11 type version of all of these games using the original drawings

Imagine if Final Fantasy I-VI got multiple versions like Dragon Quest XI. One is the Pixel Remaster. Another is the patented HD-2D style. An another is an Unreal Engine 5 full blown 3D version playing like Dragon Quest XI.

I had it for psp a long time ago but never got far enough i always get to the part with the "twins and the wall" I've still own it for ds but I'm not sure if I should get pixle remaster

@@andrewlopez7143 i just beat the game and it depends what u want in a game. psp version i think is the best because it stays close to the original but updated the visuals greatly and adds the 2 expansions. ds version is significantly harder so there's more grinding, it adds some new game play elements that weren't in the oringinal and adds voice acting plus 3d models. i like to try and stick to the oringinal version of games or updated versions that are super close to the original so that's why i prefer psp. haven't tried the pixel remaster so i can't comment on gameplay but to me i don't like the visuals and the battle screens have a lot of empty space, all up to you and what you prefer

@@Gazing-09 It try to stay true to the original, 3D is ugly as fuck, PSP sprite look like they got a stick up their ass and the heads look weird and the original is still good but PR is just a prettier version of it

Sigh I would love the older ff games being done in that style. I agree that 6 would be fantastic in that style. The Warring Traid and Kefka would be awesome lol.

@@Vereid It would automatically forgive any negligence Squareenix has ever done to the older FF titles not remade like FF7. It would also make it more accessible.

I don't think PR is as easy as PSP version though, when I played PSP version I remember destroying Cagnazzo before he even did the water shield thing and on 3D version he destroyed me and used that move several times.

@@ChrisMS0815 no, PR is a lot easier than any other version. You level up a lot quicker and arrows are kinda op now.

@@stardustsdd True I did notice that Rosa was doing insane damage early with the Bow. I wish they just kept the difficulty the same as the SNES version.

I dont have any problem with being easier, though the remove of the optional content and questionable art style just ruins it for me.

@@sebastiankulche Yeah these remasters actually try to get as close to the originals even if it means cutting out content later versions had. Like in FF1 they went back to the goofy looking class change sprite styles on NES over the PS1 and PSP versions updated ones.

No Cave of Trials either. So no pickings to pen-uber weapons, sadly. Which means we probably won't be seeing cameo weapons from the older titles. (The After Years both had the Mythgraven Blade and the Sword of Legend as Cecil's default paladin swords as debug items)

Probably watching on a phone. The pixel remaster looks much better on a high res lcd.

One question: What's PR? Is it mobile?

The pixel remaster of FF6 will be definitive, I can't wait to hear the new rearranged soundtrack.

Currently the definitive edition is the SNES one with a translation patch. But there is a high chance that the pixel remaster will beat it. 16:9 HD with rearranged soundtrack and some balancing tweaks- I have really high expectations.

@@sebastiankulche The GBA version is amazing, but the graphics and music are such a step-down from the SNES. Add to that the censorship :(

@@WhiteRoninG I agree with the music, but the graphics are actually better. In SNES the backgrounds are very plain, man, i was so dissapointed that the PS1 version was a 1:1 port of the SNES, despite PS1 being much more powerful, and with loading times, it plays somehow worse.

I am REALLY critical about PSP's design choices. This version looks like an absolute mess to me, probably the uglier any FF has ever looked. All characters look like they're based off weird templates and there's absolutely no personality or appeal in any of those characters. It does look very colorful and pleasing to look at, but the character design fails to hard to let me take this game seriously. Though I've only played the original SNES version, I really think they've done a good job on the 3DS version. They changed a lot of things in art style, but don't you feel like they tell the story and use the characters in a much effective way? I really liked how they made the cutscenes and voiced the characters, they really look and feel alive. But I'm not disagreeing that Mist Dragon looked like a pregnant blue roundworm.

@@Damyoro Ouch, poor Mist dragon, lol. I see where you're getting from, though. It's probably all in the eye of the beholder. I do agree that the voices add to it. DK Cecil does sound pretty much like I imagined it back then. Still, I guess the pixel remaster I probably closest to the original, which for nostalgic reasons is probably the way I will go when I do a retro FF gauntlet.

there's a mod that replaces the PSP music with the pixel remaster music if you're interested. it has some bugs though and you have to rip your own game from the american disc etc

I give the credit to the 3D soundtrack of Final Fantasy IV and III.

Final Fantasy is almost like Zelda and Dragon Quest. Although as a deconstruction. As experimental, and pushing the boundaries like Shin Megami Tensei did before.

I difficult on NDS too.

It's not that hard, but ANNOYING, I swear dude the Frame Rate and the UI Size is making me having motion-sickness

3D remake looks like crap, why did they have to make a 3D remake on the DS of all places? It aged horribly.

I know a lot of people are saying this, but the pixel remaster project was not about delivering some kind of "best looking version" and it wasn't advertised as such. They made it pretty clear this was about creating a similar look and interface over the NES/SNES era. For instance, if you look at behemoth, he looks like the SNES sprite art. It's a retro feel instead of the redone sprites. If people were expecting the PSP version, they didn't pay any attention to even the earliest announcement of this release.

@@AuspexAO in all fairness they didn't really advertise it as anything but just another remaster... the fact it's not on par with other remasters of the same game is why people are upset

@@xKillZone99 Maybe they shouldn't have gone with “Pixel” remaster and called it “retro” remaster instead. The “pixel” part is supposed to imply an artstyle where the pixels are still obvious and viewable, an old-school remaster.

The PSP and 3D versions would tell the story to greater effect. Retaining the pixel art look just bogs it down, but at least they arranged the soundtrack so it would sound as if there were no constraints. I prefer the PSP version’s terminology, such as “Feymarch” rather than “Land of Summons.” The PR version’s terminology is generic and cut-and-paste from the GBA version.

that's because PSP is a handheld with a small screen so objects on screen are made larger so they are easier to see. Playing SNES version or PR on something the size of a PSP screen would be hella straining on the eyes.
