Can you beat Proto-Babil without spending weeks to maximize your stats?
When I started Game++ I was eager to finally meat this legendary Proto-Babil optional boss (considered one of the hardest in the whole FF series)
After few tries and adjustments I menage to kill him on level 82-84, so I decided to post a video.
Something to consider:
In ALL videos that I have seen on this battle players have maxed stats. If you have tried to maximize your HP to the limit of 9999 you will know how bad is FF4. For comparison, if you are 'lucky' as I'm (and I'm not) you will need 2 hours to receive one item4 drop (0.4% probability or 0.8% with TreasureHunter)
So if we want adamant armor we need only 5 pieces. But if we want to maximize Cecil (roughly 5k HP) you will need around 50 GoldenApples or 100 SilverApple. All other characters require even more!
You do the math, but I'm not willing to even try to spend so much time just to beat Proto-Babil.
STRATEGY:
Proto-Babil have 400k HP and since with LimitBreak you can not do more than 99999 damage, you need at least 5 hits (make every hit counts, because his counter-attack do 3-4k dmg to all). Then why wait lvl 99 to maximize your power, when average of 80k hit will do the job?
Since Jump is SLOWWW (I know you think at takes 2 turns, but actually it takes at least 3+) I will do:
- 2 Jumps with Kain for 90k+ dmg/Jump
- 3 ???? Love with Cecil (it will do almost 1.6 more then normal dmg)
first Jump and the two ???? Love should not do more then 280k dmg!!!
final Jump and ??? love must be done in one turn
Equipment:
MUST: 2 Onion Swords, 5 Adamant armors
Recommended: 5 Ribbons, 5 Crystal rings / Protect Rings
*forget about onion equipment it really sucks (helms have nice speed bonus before you get 99 speed)
Stats:
Maxed only main stats - Strength/Stamina for fighters and Intelligence/Spirit for mages.
Party:
* Two fighters:
- Focus x3
- Darkside
- Limit Break
- Jump / ???? LOVE
* Healer: - dualcats, omnicast, fasttalker,
* Rouge - steal and cry
* Damage Buffer:
- DrawAttacks
- Brave
!Funny - Rydia was my only option to receive the damage (3.3k HP) :D

My strategy with only one limit break augment given to Cecil: ????'s Love, Focus, Darkness, Limit Break on Cecil. Draw Attacks and Dualcast on Rydia (damage absorption in stage one, extra damage in stage two). Omnicasting on Rosa (for party wide haste) Salve on Edge (for backup revival) Cry and Phoenix on Kain (defense down + revival if he goes down) Basic strategy is to charge up with Cecil, then have him hit for 99999. Revive Rydia if she goes down. If Kain goes down, it'll drain his MP and revive everyone else. Revive and ether him if this happens. While dealing damage, you'll want him to get as close as possible to his second stage, which he goes into after taking 280000 damage. Have Rosa cast Curaja on the boss twice to keep him out of his second stage. 99999 + 99999 + 99999 - 9999 - 9999 = 279999, the closest we can get him to his second stage. Once we're there, charge up another 99999 hit with Cecil. Next, we need to time Edge's attack, Kain's jump, and Rydia's two dualcasted flares to go off at around the same time as Cecil's slash. This is where luck comes in, as if he counters with object 199, it WILL kill Rydia. If you end up in that situation, hope he doesn't heal. Otherwise, the rest of the team should be able to do the last 20002 damage.

How can you get Cecil to hit 99.999??

DandelionValadier Focus x3, darkness, ????'s love. Limit break augment increases damage cap to 99999. With a maxed out ????'s love and either ragnarok or an onion sword equipped on Cecil, it should cap.

In order to max out ????'s Love, do I need a friend with a DS who has FFIV?

It was necessary for DS. That's why better play mobile/PC version now.

I feel your pain - in the second stage it is like ... hell: - Divine Judgment (may kill the whole party), - Object99 (kill one party member), - Heal (20k+ possibly each turn) That is why solid strategy is needed: * Chop a little bit less of 280k HP (to stay in Stage 1) * and then do at least 120k at once before Proto-Babil can react

Heck yeah! Its moveset has so many overpowered attacks. And to not have to max out the character's levels, is so impressive.

Basically you need to max EVERYTHING thats remotely related to any stat in this game to beat him.Onion Equipment, often very hard abilities to get, Best weapons in the game, and probably more. No this boss and the other, Geyreon or whatever the name of that horror of a boss was.

@killer67able 1. You get a limit break after you finish a game. (you can do this 2 times) 4. Game++ means that I have previously finished the game 2 times (that is why I have 2 limit breaks). 2. Adamant armor you take from Lunar B5 by defeating 'Flan Princess' - (this is very odd battle). Flan Princess appear when you use Siren. - onion equipment - from colored dragons - gold apple/silver apple - there are couple of monsters that drop it BUT all of this has 0.4% chance.(0.8% w Treasure Hunter)

exactly 400k (400 000) HP. If you don't kill it fast in second stage, it can heal itself for 22k+ ;)

Also, Brace lasts for as long as you don't select another action with the braced character or until they die. No need to reselect it normally.

you know i would call this unbeleivably impressive if it wasnt for 4 things... 1. tail equipment is very op 2. from about 75-99 the stat difference isn't that huge 3. you skipped the hardest part of the fight the divine judgement and heal phase, considering he can do 2 in the span of about a turn just makes that part unbelievable 4. it looks like you knew what you were doing, going through these games blind and then having to fight this guy without all the best augments is just hell

+windwaker0rules I've almost taken him down, but then he did 3 Divine Judgments on me in a row, using up my Phoenixes and finishing the job before I could restore any MP.

This battle is so much damn harder on mobile because of only 1 Limit Break augment, but as of right now, I defeated Proto-Babil 3 times

Only 1 ... that will slow the battle. It is still doable with the same strategy, but if you do 99,999 you will need to heal the boss for around 20k, before landing the 4th hit.

SquallSf Not to mention you're correct about using Curaja twice on Proto-Babil because after 3 hits with 99999 damage, he will have 120,001 HP, which is 1 HP high before his 2nd phase (bullshit phase)

Yeah quite un-lucky in this run. Before recording, I usually got a steal on 2nd/3rd "round" and enjoy the buff till the rest of the fight.

@AquaRing There is minimum HP and stats requirement to work for my strategy. It is been long time since I played FF4, but on level 65 I think you can not fulfill these requirements (especially HP).

Just wondering, if he's not immune to sap couldn't you just cast bio until it puts sap on him and the have someone use hide and have two other people with Phoenix and the just pummel him

Hey Jonathan, please read the description under the video (click 'show more'). I'm sure you will have all the answers. BTW my strategy is 100% safe. I don't need to revive/hide. As you can see in the video my party didn't get hits. HP level is calculated, so even Proto-Babil counter, the party will survive.

Also, I gave draw attacks to edge, because he becomes virtually unhittable at a high level.

@@SquallSf No it’s because Edge has a very high evasion stat because he’s a Ninja so at high levels, he dodges almost every attack

@@Troy_The_Boi Interesting, do you think he will dodge the Proto-Babil's attacks? If so, that could device a new strategy ... In FF4 Edge is quite weak, so I didn't rely on him. But in FF4 The After Years, he shines brightly - high speed, damage, steal and good synergy (in bands).

@@SquallSf Babil only uses magic that’s 100% sure to hit so evasion dosent really work here. But the closest thing to that wold be equipping Admanr Armour (which u did here) because as you know, it immunizes you to Babils, instant Death Attack

Hehe, well that's is the trick. You must equip DrawAttack to one that will use Brace. This way attacks will be focused on on the character with DrawAttack. Since he/she will Brace, he/she will get much reduced damage, and the rest of the party will be full of HP :)

I did this with only one rare equipment and one limit break. Killing him is piss easy when you have two limit break.

Why does Rydia have Brace, and not Cecil? She's not really built to take direct hits by herself. Also, you can have Edge in the back if you were to give him Reach, That's what I did, although I also had him Hide and Salve phoenix downs to my party if they all died. I took a lot longer to beat him, but I think my way was a lot safer.

+m0therchi3f The Dark Matter gets used up afterwards, so if you want to fight Proto-Babil again, you must fight Zeromus again in NG+, steal another Dark Matter, and fight him again in NG++. Geryon, however, can be fought infinitely.

What version did you play? This is DS. It also require to beat the game at least once. I have no clue how is that in newer ports - PC/Android.

@@SquallSf I played the DS version and I did beat the game I unlocked all the special weapons and everything I did this on both the game boy version and the DS version and yet I still never knew that this boss existed until rather recently.

@@AncapOtaku I see. I didn't know either on my first playthrough. But after I finish a FF title on my own, I usually try to unlock all the secrets, thus I saw info for the boss on gameFAQ..
