Fantastic job this month, Marshall! Your coverage was the cherry on the sundae leading up to and after the race. The tire assembly clearing the fence gave me scary flashbacks to Charlotte 1999. I hope at least the lady who's car got clobbered by it gets a free care from the speedway.

Thanks so much, Marshall for, above all, your humanity that comes through on these videos. It was a pleasure meeting you for about 30 seconds at the museum before the GMR Grand prix. Also, thanks for the explanation on the tires. While harboring no conspiracy theories (Joseph deserved the win), I was uncomfortable with the last red (not the first two) and part of that was thinking it was more dangerous. I really appreciated that explanation. Still not sure about the last red, though :).

Marshall, great video. It's so unfortunate that deductive reasoning has evaporated from the education system in this country. You clearly have it, and the person that sent you on this wild goose chase doesn't. With the million things that can go wrong on an Indy car (just ask Graham), Josef not only needed his car to stay together, but he had to get by Marcus. I think your observation on Sunday evening about Marcus using the dragon for the final restart opened the for Josef to make his move. On a different note, one January a few years ago, I was at Sebring for January practice having lunch at the hotel Don Panoz once owned, and there you were across the track with your signature shirt. Very cool.

Thanks MP for a great month of videos and coverage. Awesome driver interviews and tech videeos. Btw as for the wheel, wow IndyCar really dodged a bullet and so happy it cleared the grandstand. That is two near motorsport disasters in the last few weeks. Last month, a sportscar cleared the catch fence and landed in the grandstands at an FIA F1 approved circuit in Europe. Fortunately that grandstand was empty! I am sure IndyCar and the FIA will be closely looking at both incidents.

The conspiracy aspect is dumb, but there have been yellows to the end in previous races before that Indycar has defended doing. The 104th running went yellow at lap 196 for example. Happy for Newgarden, sad for Ericsson. Newgarden did the best given the circumstances presented and fully deserves it. Perhaps Indycar should look into the red flag situation for the future though (3 set a new record I think?) It feels like Indycar's Abu Dhabi 2021 moment which is a shame.

@jamesbowman7963
@jamesbowman7963 Год назад
Marshall I wouldn't raise my blood pressure by a single point worrying about conspiracy theorists... I actually appreciate the lengths they went to have the race finish green.... Yellow flag or red flag finishes are always a massive let down. The tire temps confirm it wasn't unsafe so to speak either. I do think Erickson was a sitting duck period and there is nobody you don't want behind in this situation more than Josef Newgarden... My suggestion is if it is a single lap or two you just make it three laps under green to finish and give Erickson in this situation a chance to get it back.
@timford3599
@timford3599 Год назад
All due respect to you James, but the Indy 500 is just that. Not the Indy 502.5 or 505. I believe everyone would rather see the race end under green but, the "3 RED FLAGS" smacks of NASCAR which I left years ago B/C all of their fakery and gimmicks. I am glad for Josef but I agreed with Marcus Erickson that starting the last green from the pits for a 1.5 lap ("Trophy Dash," my words not his) race to the checkers was NOT fair and, IMO certainly diminishes the Importantly Historic 107 Year Legacy of "The Greatest spectacle in Racing." As I said, Glad for Josef but sad to see the conditions under which the LAST 10 Laps were Contested!
@jamesbowman7963
@jamesbowman7963 Год назад
@@timford3599 Maybe I didn't say it clearly enough... I don't think it was good to end under yellow or red but one lap was not really fair either. FWIW I doubt any car goes exactly 500 miles so a few extra laps doesn't matter. I don't think trying to finish under green is a gimmick but we probably disagree. The series had no control over when the crashes happened and three consecutive restarts was unusual. I think they were just in the worst situation.

Same scenario played out in 2020 and the series said there wasn’t enough time to throw a red flag. Stop being a spokesperson for the series and actually be a reporter. Of course Penske don't call in and tell race control what to do. But come on, race control knows who owns the series and track and which driver is there. Nascar green-white-checker 2.0. Roger owns the track, owns the racing series, owns the officiating body that called those bullshit red flags, and owns the team that won, do you honestly believe they would have called that last red flag if Josef was leading and not second? HELL NO! they would have said 2 laps, not enough to restart, safety is a concern, but instead they throw safety out the window, start the race right out of the pits without a one lap warmup. That race was stolen from at least TWO drivers.
@Casey_J96
@Casey_J96 Год назад
I believe the red flags were the correct call. Being in the stands, everyone around seemed to appreciate the effort to finish under green. Where race control messed up was the timing. Last red should’ve flown immediately instead of coming around under yellow and then stopping. Also wasted a lap earlier on a separate red reordering the field. I think they made the right decisions, just missed the timing. And as much as racing is all about winning, I believe Penske has too much respect for the series and the event to fix it for his own team. Newgarden earned that win

Thanks so much to you, Racer, and everyone else involved in all of the written and video reporting for the month. Can't wait to see what you do with the Garage 56 stuff and, as I mentioned elsewhere, I am just so happy you get to return to Le Mans. Enjoy your (albeit brief) time off with Mrs. Pruett.

red flag finish in this form has to stop . red flag is not about preserving laps for a green flag finish . red flag is a safety condition that requires the stopping of the race and cars returning to the pits because the condition can not be addressed under a yellow flag , or the races timing requirements . if there is no safety requirement to stop the race then race needs to be run under the yellow flag even if that means ending under yellow in the end stages of a race .

Like 2 cars, immobile on the front straight, blocking most of the track?

If the same red flags had been thrown in 2002, Helio would be a 3-time winner… race has never been stopped that many times at the end. I don’t think there is a conspiracy by Penske, but Ericsson won yesterday’s race. The last red flag was unwarranted and the race should have finished under yellow. There wasn’t enough laps left to stop and restart the race at that point.

I completely agree 100%. The Finishes of 1989, 2012 and especially 2020 (among many others) had set precedence for "Late" Red Flag Stoppages. If the race is past Lap 195 then "Let the Chips Fall Where They May." If an incident is so great that more than 10 minutes is needed to clean up the mess to safely finish those last 3 laps then, "SO BE IT." As it was, each red flag needlessly put drivers and possibly fans and "The Direct Path of Danger." The Indianapolis 500 IS NOT NASCAR!

Hey genius if the last two reds don’t come out Newgarden still wins under yellow. You can make the argument there’s to many reds at the end but the right guy won the race

Winning under yellow is stupid period. The red flag made it exciting. I was going to Indy when I lived there in the late 60s and 70s when men were men. And a driver died every 2 weeks. Common Man lets race under green to the finish and may the best driver win.

The reason why all these young kids on these threads think the racing was great and the greatest - they don't know any better. They never experienced the truly great racing of the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. Forty years of glorious evolutionary, innovation and intriguing state-of-the art racing. With all best racing car manufacturers, engine suppliers and the World's greatest drivers like Jimmy Clark and Nigel Mansell. F1 Champions. Now reduced to a farce of all identical spec cars with no name drivers on an economy run, only racing the last 5-laps The Glory Days will never be revisited.

I experienced all that, starting in the '60s. I still think Indy was a great race.

So only F1 drivers count? And if these cars are so backward, why are they going into T1 at 230 plus mph? Much faster than in your glory days.

@@craigyirush3492I didn't say that. Parnelli Jones, the Andretti's, the Unser's, Rick Mears were great Indy drivers. Why are the lap average speeds only 2mph faster than in 1996? 27-years ago!

@@davemoorhead7682 What was great about it? Other than it was a crashfest with shocking officiating! Newgarden should have been DQ'd for weaving 2- carwidths into pit lane. Low-class to the extreme And of course, the finish was rigged so that a Penske car won. A shocker eh!
@craigyirush3492

@@DennisMerwood-xk8wp the only drivers you mentioned were F1 drivers (Clark and Mansell). F1 is a high tech non-spec series and it’s a snooze fest compared to modern Indy Car.
